There was scattered discussion about the S14 and i don't recall anyone complaining of rising black levels. I have a G10 which seems to be the most affected model and i can only see my risen black levels when i'm watching a movie at night in a completely dark room. It's barely noticeable when watching HD TV shows at night.
But while watching Speed channel and other sports during the day as well as local and national news programming in the pre-dawn hours and after work, the risen blacks are not noticeable and it is a non issue. The TV looks fantastic and the blacks look fine. I imagine your kids would never notice it or even care
Glare could be an issue if the room is bathed in sunlight, but the Anti Reflective filter on the Panasonics is about the best on the market. The screen can be adjusted bright enough to punch through quite a bit of ambient light during the day. My G10 looks great in my sunny man room in the afternoons.
