Record ATSC signal and play it back on TV.

I don't have cable, nor do I desire the service, and I am looking for a device to record national broadcast channels and play them back on my TV at my own leisure. I was wondering if the easiest way was just to get that HD Tivo and if that would work, or should I get something like the EyeTV from Elgato, record the tv to my mac, and then stream that through my PS3.

I would appreciate any help.

Check out the top sticky thread in this forum, the comparison chart.
If you're OK with SD then the Magnavox 513 DVDR may be your ticket. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=940657

If you want HD then I'd strongly suggest the Tivo HD or new Tivo Primere, both of whom have nice threads in this forum.
If you don't mind tinkering around you could try and build a HTPC but personally I'm more interested in recording TV than playing with a PC trying to get it to record. JMO

It really depends on what you want and are willing to put up with.

If you want an inexpensive, you can with the Dish DTVPal DVR. It's around $300, but they tend to be quite buggy.

Tivo is a good option, but you have to pay (either with a monthly or lifetime) for the service.

A dedicated HTPC is powerful and flexible, but can be a lot of work and expensive.

Your idea of using eyeTV and streaming to a PS3 would probably work, but you wouldn't get the benefits of live TV.

One other option would be a discontinued Sony DHG-HDD250 (or 500). But these are a lot of work as well.

Short answer:

Tivo= Relatively Easy at a cost
Everything else= Varying degrees of difficulty also at a cost

Macs suck big time for editing if you need frame accuracy, otherwise EyeTV is nice for scheduling recordings. I've been using a Mac for the last 4 months with my HDHomeRuns and also the firewire interface to DVHS and my Comcast box.
No VideoReDo nor M2R.
