I just got through watching District 9. Phe·nom·e·nal! My settings are currently set against the D-V-E HD Basics and HQV Silicon Optix disks with certain feature/mode adjustments based upon visual preference and I'll certainly need to go back and make some additional tweaks - but from what I can tell thus far, I'm close to getting it right enough for my own eyes - it shouldn't take too much more fiddling.
Most noteworthy is the fact that the black surrounding the ending credits was very deep and consistent corner to corner. The credits are stark white and I can't for the life of me pick up on what others have called bleed or blooming on these newest sets. No flashlighting, no clouding and no flickering whatsoever. I'll list out what my particular settings are once I get things dialed in but as a cursory note, I've got the Adv Contrast Enhancer set to Medium along with the Black Corrector and then the LED Dynamic Control & Auto Light Limiter both set to Low. Those settings during District 9 produced very pleasing black levels without crushing the shadow detail. Incidentally, I picked these settings watching the animated film Nine over the weekend, which was like all the animated features we've demo'd since Friday nite - absolutely mindblowing with lots of pop but not over top if that makes any sense.
I'll post up my best first swag at settings for both Comcast HD hdmi feeds as well as PS3 HD hdmi feeds once I settle on something pleasing all the way around. If it helps someone out or gives them food for thought, coolness.
And yes, I picked mine up at BB for that same purpose; there's too many complaints about random clouding on LCD based sets in general, so it pays to have a local point of exchange in the event of a bum panel. But so far, I'm stoked. It looks damn good, all 55 inches of it!
In final response to Vipe, I've been checking out LED based sets since CES and although I'm only one voice, my experiences along with anyone else's collectively should help out (at least that's the hope...) anyone contemplating purchasing one of these. I don't profess to be the singular expert nor do I think the HX909 or even the LX900 are inferior sets compared to the HX800. My point a while back was that the XBR sub-branding thing is goofy ass'd and inconsistent, and this non-XBR set rivals those on the black levels and dynamic range capability. It's the reflective nature of the HX909 that rubbed me the wrong way and that's personal experience, your eyes may vary. Period. Apart from that, there's plenty of folks on either side of the fence when it comes to Edge Lit vs Full LED matrix as well as people with pros and cons on this particular set. Trust you own eyes, that's what counts. As far as all the back and forth banter, ha ha, we had our fun but I'm done dignifying anything else said with a response. You ain't worth it dude.
