"Covert Affairs" on USA HD - Page 11

Covert Affairs seems to be doing that... morphing into a solid espionage show and maintaining real-world legitimacy most of the time.

That stuff about tracking Arthur's cellphone calls and emails would have been fantasy last year. Now it's realistic.

It was realistic last year too (and for the past decade) it's just that nobody bothered to pay attention back when Carnivore was in use. wink.gif

And Echelon before that. As I understood it, those were both keyword programs. IOW they monitored conversations for certain words that would then be flagged for further review.

Piper Perabo sells it. Christopher Gorham sells it. And I love the theme music, cheesy as it is. So, since I don't believe in hiding behind the "guilty pleasure" excuse, I'll just have to admit that I'm shallow. Pretty faces turn my head and inane music sometimes moves me.

Ha ha. Me too. I even love the cheesy cartoonish graphics of the opening. The nice deep blacks help me check that my HDTV's grayscale is properly calibrated.

Also, I like the way you put that -- that Piper and Chris Gorham sell it. They do.

No doubt about it, man. My blood is red and I'm a man, and she is a gorgeous woman. I think I'd watch her read the phone book.

Maybe I need to go back and watch Looper again. biggrin.gif

Apparently dumped this season, thankfully. They were a nice concept but TERRIBLY executed.

Maybe just dumped to gain valuable seconds for the weekly story... it's not like the 60's and 70's where there were only 8 min of commercials in the hour- most "hour" long shows only run 41-42 min nowadays so every second counts.

for me the old opening does not seem to fit the tone of this season. The show has gone darker, and that opening seems a bit more light and breezy.

Personally, I'm enjoying the new darker tone. I'd love to see Annie go hard-core spy- kind of like Nikita (but without the Division drama); someone who's not afraid to pull the trigger.

Just a note to say I continue to like the darker Covert Affairs this season...and wondering when somebody is just going to shoot Henry Wilcox and be done with it.

I continue to like Covert Affairs a lot too. As noted in earlier posts, I love me some Piper Perabo. I am of two minds about what the future of Henry Wilcox, played by the slime-ball from central casting, Gregory Itzin, should be. On one hand, I agree that it would be satisfying to see Henry meet a horrible death this season but on the other hand, it's almost as much fun seeing him cause trouble in his inimitably dastardly way.

Henry certainly was all sweetness-and-light last episode until Annie got him to lose his temper--then he turned almost hysterical. I'm wondering if it's possible that he killed his own son (who turned him in as the leak), so it may not be, as Annie suggested, grief, but guilt. Jae was onto something just prior to the explosion, but all along, a part of me has thought and still thinks he just might still be alive somewhere.

I can't dismiss the notion that Jai may still be alive either. It would be a pretty incredible twist but is the sort of thing we have seen over and over again on dramatic series.

I haven't watched last night's episode yet... but I keep wondering. Twice (unless they did it again last night) they have started the show with Annie in a faceoff and apparently being shot and killed... the rest of the show is "6 weeks earlier" or whatever... so we seem to be building to a confrontation... but I have to think they aren't actually killing her because there goes the show... so I too keep wondering if Henry's son isn't still alive out there somewhere... and a faked death of Annie would get her to join him in his mission like he appeared to be trying to get her to do back when he "died".

I finally caught up with this week's show. Holy cow, Gregory Itzin is just fantastic as Henry Wilcox. He's just sooooo creep-tastic.

Yeah, he's kind of like the prototypical "evil genius" we get to see once in a while in the movies.
No doubt he's in for a bad ending if he doesn't change his ways...

He sure was a creepy President Charles Logan on "24." His resemblance to Nixon just added to the effect.

Agree that Itzen is good, although he drove me crazy on 24 with all his head tilts.

That's from watching too much David Caruso. wink.gif

There was and will only be one President Weasel from 24, until he conspired with the dastardly Miles Papazian and became Weasel x 2...

Now that Augie's wife has resurrected Jae may be alive as well. But with all of Henry's connections you would think he would know that. Its fun to speculate.

I know this is far afield, but I am kinda annoyed they have killed the opening music for a lot of episodes this season.

Normally I would agree... Henry seems to be well connected... BUT if Jae knows his father is uber-evil and the whole reason he went into hiding and faked his death was so that he could investigate his father... then Jae would be several steps ahead at all times since Henry is not looking for his son, he has accepted that he died.

Didn't he pretty much get blown up right in front of Annie, as the car was parked in front of the windows of the cafe visible from her table? I may be wrong, but that's how I remember it. You can fake getting killed by a bullet. It's hard to stand next to or be sitting inside of an exploding car and not get real hurt real fast. It would be pretty disappointing if he was suddenly revealed to be alive the whole time.

Think Smallville... where they showed a similar thing featuring a main character... only to reveal that there was a hidden panel under the truck where the main character escaped safely before the explosion.

IF Jae faked his death... he could have had a setup where he gets into his car, then drops through a hole in the floor, through to a hole in the ground to an underground pre-arranged escape just before triggering the car to explode.

I'm really leaning this way harder now after they just explained the whole backstory of Augie's wife and how they faked an execution complete with a fake bad guy and fake police to cover up her being shot in the street in broad daylight... usually when a show goes out of its way to do that it isn't just for the character they show... but to demonstrate how easily it is for the agency to make someone disappear so they can "do more" behind the scenes... it almost seemed like a big "hint hint maybe this is what we did with Jae too" banner waving during the exposition.

I'm going to assume that a crime scene investigation looking into a bombing/murder of a federal agent is going to be competent enough to find an unexplained trap door to a bomb shelter in the middle of a parking lot directly under the burned car. You can maybe buy kind of gag in a superhero show that isn't remotely grounded in reality, but I wouldn't buy that explanation in this show.

Aha... but that depends... was Jae working on his own to fake his death OR did he have help? They also showed how easy it was for someone to clean up a crime scene (the house where Annie killed the rogue CIA lawyer) and fake DNA results to "prove" that Annie didn't kill that agent...

I would suspect that for Jae to turn up alive... he would have had help to fake his death and go undercover and then he would have a handler of some sort (perhaps even Arthur frankly) that he reports his findings to...

So, they could investigate the car bomb and find what Jae wanted them to find because the coverup was in on the investigation.
As I remember it, we never actually saw Jae get into the car.

If this actually turned out to be a real plot development, I would be hugely disappointed, because it's kind of a cheesy cop out. I actually had respect for the show when they killed off a major character (albeit one who really didn't fit the dynamic of the show and needed to be removed to push the series in new directions).

So, I assume Calder Michaels was in on that plan with Annie?

They had to act fast, so he may not know all the details- but that photo of Henry in the jungle meeting w/the terrorists probably was enough to convince him that "something's not right at Langley"... so I would assume he's "in" for the time being.
