"Covert Affairs" on USA HD - Page 12

I think they played pretty straight with us this season. On the one hand, they wanted Calder to look like he might be a secret bad guy BUT they never misdirected... they never had him do anything but be a super-patriot. We were meant to read-into his "follow the rules" as if he was sniping and trying to nose into things... but truth be told, some of the problems Annie, Augie, etc dealt with could have been avoided IF they had trusted Calder from the beginning... but then this show has taught our good guys to be careful who they trust... so it actually followed logically... Calder was nothing but up front and truthful from day one and Annie/Augie were distrustful because they had to be... so the fallout was unavoidable BUT they gain a strong ally in the end.

I have been quite pleased with how they have let the characters be who they are this season and the plots really flow naturally from episode to episode. I liked the show from the beginning, but this series in particular seems to have everyone hitting the high notes.

It got SOOOOO much better after they dropped the unnecessary soap opera-ish B story with Annie's family, and just focused on making a good spy drama.

Amen! I like the actress who played Annie's sister but the thread recounting her domestic difficulties and Annie's ongoing concealment of the identity her true employer drove me crazy.

Now it's time to give Auggie back his eyesight. This show would work so much better for me if Annie and Auggie could work together in the field without shredding my suspension of disbelief. Trying to write around the blindness makes for very awkward storytelling.

Next they need to get Ironsides out of that damned wheelchair.

But seriously.

This isn't a show that blinded a main character for a plot... Augie was blind from before they started the show... so his character is introduced that way... I think "curing" him would be a disservice to his character, the actor, the show, and blind people who might (pardon the choice of words) look up to such a character on TV.

I think we may have had this conversation before. smile.gif

First of all, I don't think Auggie represents blind people in any way. They've changed this show in the past by rethinking its creative direction. They ditched Annie's sister because that character was a distraction rather than a strength. IMO Christopher Gorham and Piper Perabo have great chemistry on screen, and it has nothing to do with his blindness. All his blindness does is limit their interaction or, worse, force the writers to create some totally unbelievable scenarios for them to be together. They set the stage for surgery to restore Auggie's eyesight, and I'd welcome the change - even more than I welcomed the departure of Annie's sister. I see the blindness (pun intended) as a device that never worked very well in the first place. Not changing a show (even in fairly dramatic ways) doesn't necessarily mean the producers have more "integrity." It may simply mean that they want to take the show in a different (and maybe better) direction. I'd be surprised if Christopher Gorham would object to such a change - at least no more than he would to having his character magically appear in a dark room of a US embassy with no explanation as to how he got there. Don't get me wrong. I think Christopher Gorham has made the most of this role. He's played the character just about as well as you could ask of any actor. I'd just like to see him given the opportunity to show his acting chops as a sighted Auggie down the line.

Trying to write stories about Annie and Auggie in the field leads to awkward storytelling, true. But it worked quite well when Auggie was more like the comic character Oracle, the handicapped super computer hacker helping behind the scenes. I liked that dynamic very much. I thought it worked great and was very interesting. I think it has cheapened the story to see them in action scenes together in the field. And I think I'd check out completely if suddenly he regained his eyesight. Ugh. Then they might as well go full cheese and heal him with magic blood.

I think the occasional flashback scenes are enough for people dying to see sighted Auggie and to let Gorham work his acting chops a little.

Different strokes. smile.gif

Some things in Covert Affairs have always worked for me: the acting, all around; Annie and Auggie's relationship; the pacing; even the cheesy music and opening animation sequence that you hated so much. Some things never worked very well for me: the early writing and dialogue; weak story lines; undue amounts of "filler" material; the lame sister stories; and, all too often, Auggie's blindness. I remember feeling pulled completely out of the story by the unbelievability of what Auggie was able to do. Not that a blind person isn't capable of miraculous feats - just that I couldn't buy that many of the things he was doing were even possible. I've never gotten past that. I certainly wouldn't balk if they decided to change one of the things about the show that made me gag so often.

These days, I think the writing is much tighter and the dialogue not nearly so cliched. The pacing is still very good. The acting is solid. Henry Wilcox is a terrific bad guy. I think the show has the legs for a couple or three more years. I also think Auggie's regaining his sight might even help that happen, because it would open up the possibilities for even better storytelling and great chemistry between the leads. I don't think the show would have any trouble surviving the change.

Like I said, different strokes. smile.gif

I don't have any opinion on Auggie getting his eyesight back, doesn't matter to me either way, that being said..
If he did regain his sight- I just like to see the look on his face when he sees who he's been hooking up with the last few months biggrin.gif

Ironsides could solve a LOT more cases if he got out of that chair... so I hope he gets to walk soon!

Yeah, this does feel a little like deja vu.

I'm not a fan of stunt stuff... like when they blind or otherwise "temporarily" maim a main character for a story. It is ok in small doses, but not for the long haul.

But, when the character comes in with something... be it blindness or missing a limb or can't walk or whatever they choose... that is how they define the character. IF they change that, then they change the character... and I'm not a fan of that either.

DON'T FORGET!

New season of "Covert Affairs" begins on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17, at 10pm ET/PT.

There should be NEW EPISODES for six consecutive weeks.

[Well, OK. It's really the second half of Season 4.]

I've also been watching!
When my wife asks what I'm watching... I just say "Annie Walker" and she smiles....

I'm watching, too. For me, the show is stronger than ever.

couldn't agree more. loving hill harper. still not completely sure his character is on the up and up though.

I am still watching the show, but I have been downgrading it. I really am getting sick and tired of watching Wilcox kill everyone and the protagonists continue to say "We will get him!". Just kill him already.rolleyes.gif

There are many restaurants in my area. For me to return to on of them their has to be a compelling reason. A signature dish, a style of cooking or super good service. A TV show is like that. You may sample it, rate it and place it on the list of places you go (high on list or low) Covert Affairs had something special and (IMHO) lost it. Once it became rather generic spy vs spy, I lost interest. There are so many entertainment choices available that one really must guard one's time. rolleyes.gif

With only one more episode "this season" I assume that next week will wrap up this storyline. I still like the idea that Jae is not really dead, and if he shows up again, Henry will just implode on his own.

He's alive and well on The CW's Beauty and the Beast!
He has a pretty prominent role on B&B so unless something drastic happens- I don't think he's coming back to Covert Affairs.

Yeah, I know he's there, but that doesn't rule out a cameo appearance, does it? Maybe because they are different production companies?

I don't know... I can't see them dragging out the Henry Wilcox into next season, and if Henry's gone- so is Jae...
or maybe Jae will save the day and kill daddy, saving Annie, but takes a bullet himself!

Same here. My wife and I are already in agreement that if the Henry storyline doesn't conclude at the end of this season, we're done.

I think this has been the best season ever! But i must admit i'm tired of wilcox ,I hope next season they have a mix of bad guys rather than just 1 for the whole season. This is my favorite show on tv followed by ncis, blue bloods and homeland.
