Good player for cropping/zooming non-anamorphic DVD's?

I am looking for a good Blu-ray player that will also handle my non-anamorphic DVD's well by cropping the black sidebars off and zooming in on the picture. I know the Oppo players do this well, but are there alternatives that are less expensive? I'm not talking about budget players, but $500 is a bit much for me.

Let me explain why this is an important issue to me, because I'm sure not many Blu-ray fans will run into this: I love movies from Hong Kong, and most of those are only available on DVD's from Hong Kong, where most titles were released for 4:3 TV's, hence they were not anamorphic. Things have gotten better over time, as now pretty much all new titles are anamorphic, but I like stuff from the 90's so I'm stuck with crappy DVD releases. Hence the importance of good upscaling and cropping so these titles will look 'acceptable' on my HD TV (which itself does not do zooming).

The less expensive Oppo BDP-80 ($290) will also do this, and also perform subtitle shifts.

See the manual here.

I've never seen zooming quality better than ABT VRS, which is why the OPPO BDP-83 costs $499. It even has a full-screen zoom setting which is perfect for non-anamorphic letterboxed titles.

The 983H DVD player was equivalent for DVD, but is out of production now.

The BDP-80 has similar zooming functionality although the quality is not quite as good.

Cheap options and rank:
JVC XV-BP1 (good)
LG BD550 (good)
LG BD570 (good)
Samsung BDC-5500 (average)
Oppo BDP-80 (good)

The LGs and JVC allows more adjustments/increments than anyone else, which lets you perfectly crop in. I agree with Bill that the Oppo 83 is the best.

I've been doing some reading on this one and it seems like a great product for my needs. Affordable too. I will seriously consider this player. Thanks for the tip!
