There might be more but since we do not have the official change log yet, these are all I know, and like you said, these are the only changes you will notice.

@wazy - What changes did you notice in DNM?

macerickrohan: when I first turned the tv on after the update the motion didnt seem to be as smooth as what it was - I had it set at minimum and noticed picture breakup on some faster moving scenes which I havent really noticed before. Im not sure if this was the source or the tv - I will spend more time with the DNM settings and see if it gets better or not and report back. One thing I would have liked to have seen was a custom color control to set up whitepoint levels etc. I have seen this on other Philips televisions and i know some of the european models still have this in their menu's. What would the dynamic contrast response time do for the tv? I typically have this on all the time.

Thanks

The picture breakup which you see on DNM is called Halo Effect, depending on the picture source it varies and is noticeable only in some cases. Since motion smoothing is achieved using interpolation of successive frames, it is hard to completely get rid off.

Also, about your white point levels: The Color Temp (Cool, Normal & Warm) are nothing but white point levels. Let me know if what your are referring to is something else.

DC response time is how long the secondary PQ chip took to process the video when you turn on that feature. Basically code optimization.

maverickrohan: here is a copy of what I am talking about - this is from a 2007 philips tv menu:
Press the green color button.
> The Custom color temperature screen appears. This allows
you to fine tune the white point (WP) and black level (BL) of
the picture.
® Use the cursor buttons to select and adjust the settings of:
R-WP: allows you to customize the color temperature by adjusting
the red whitepoint of the picture.
G-WP: allows you to customize the color temperature by adjusting
the green whitepoint of the picture.
B-WP: allows you to customize the color temperature by adjusting
the blue whitepoint of the picture.
R-BL: allows you to customize the color temperature by adjusting
the red blacklevel of the picture.
G-BL: allows you to customize the color temperature by adjusting
the green blacklevel of the picture.
Use the color buttons to reset to the predefined settings.
† Press the red color button or the cursor left to return to the
Picture menu.
I gather these functions are in the service menu?

Thanks Wazy

Yes they are in the service menu. (Called R/G/B Cutoffs & Drives)

They aren't in the user menu cos if you mess them up you can end up with a horrible looking picture. A servicer will always adjust them when replacing the Digital Mainboard.

Also, the Philips tag line is "Sense & Simplicity" so they try to make easy to use simple products, that's another reason why you don't see as many options as you would in some other brands.

Also, if you have the time read this:

It will change your perspective a bit.

I wish we could use NTFS, but since NTFS is a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft, its not worth it to develop and enable support for NTFS

Hello to All,
As I was reading this thread, I was smiling to find out that there is a member who is helpful about this product and of course, DAVEINGA came to mind who was also very helpful during the early days and He's around too! This is customer service at its best!
I own a 52PFL7403/F7 and it is going strong, had never any problems, but of course with the updates. Am Happy with it and if we have people on board who can give us directions, (the lesser geeks), I am more inclined to purchase my next Philips TV.

I'm seriously considering this Philips now after reading this thread. Sam's Club has it for $1298 before tax: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...navAction=push

Where can I find the software PQ update from the Philips site? I looked on their Support page but couldn't locate it. http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...=55PFL5505D/F7

My other consideration is the Sony on sale at Costco right now, which is $1599 after coupon, pre-tax: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...=1&topnav=&s=1

Has a few more bells and whistles (internet, widgets, etc) and imo a nice styled bezel, but it is hard to justify $300 more for it.

Maybe maverickrohan can advise what updates were made in this new software??? - Anyways here are my settings and I have not changed them with the new software at this point. let me know what you think.

Contrast 77
Brightness 46
Color 46
Tint 3
sharpness 5
color temp normal
dynamic contrast on
DNM off for everything but movies
noise reduction off
mpeg red on
color enhancement off
active control off - on for watching movies in a barkened room - (increases black level)
picture format unscaled

I have this TV in the 40" version and I found last night that I needed to turn Dynamic Contrast Off. It seems that if a white screen was displayed and then something else after was added to the screen, the white would dim to slightly grey. I believe this is called white falloff and is generally not supposed to be a problem with LCDs....and it is not a problem with this one either...when Dynamic contrast is turned off!

Just picked up the 40" version and for the price $800 CDN at Future Shop it was a steal in my mind. As far as specs and price there was nothing that could compete with it.

HD TV is working really well on it. I need to calibrate it but I need a BD player since my calibration disc is a BD.

I point out that it needs to be calibrated because while pretty to watch it doesn't look natural. For example, was watching Win it in a Minute and Glee with my wife and what I found was that the whites popped out of the screen and some colours such as red did the same. Detail was amazing and motion was great.

Mind you the only HD that I am intimately able to compare this with is my main which is a HD projector (Mits HC 5500).

Only complaint I have is that my rocketfish HDMI cables had to be bent slightly to fit in the back of the TV due to a raised edge on the TV.

Do rocketfish cables have ferrite cores? I noticed the tight space but my hdmi cable does not have ferrite cores.

I just saw this TV at Sam's Club.. Looked pretty good.. I was deciding between the Hitachi L55S603 and this model.

Does anyone know if the Philips or Hitachi have any Input Lag issues??

I will be gaming on this with an XBOX 360... Thanks!

Not sure but I find rocketfish cables to be a bit on the thick side.

Before I post these, you should be aware of the following:

Any accessory device connected to an HDTV via HDMI has some form of lag. That is exactly why HDMI has a lipsync option and you can enable this in your AV Receiver . Within the TV itself, the TV takes care of A/V sync.

All TVs which have a 120Hz / 240Hz panel achieve the higher frame rate using either frame repeat or interpolation of successive frames (there is a FAQ on the Philips website about this.) In theory interpolation will always cause lag. Due to this fact many games have lag correction built into them.

IMHO ... always turn off interpolation and any other image processing features on the TV while playing games (You don't really need them for games, those features are primarily for film based video content.)

Here are the lag times:

PC Mode: ~25ms
DNM Off: ~30ms
DNM Min: ~180ms
DNM Max: ~200ms

Hi, Thanks for the info... So how does game mode affect all of this?

When you put it in PC Mode, all those other options go away, you don't need to worry about putting each one of them off.

I have a question, sorry to ask it here but the 120hz 7000 series thread is dead.

Anyway, here is my question:

When going to HD channels, the coaxial port stops working. If I go back to a standard def channel, everything is fine. I have heard of HD channels not allowing the HD audio, is this the case?

Yes, that is exactly what it is. Since the Digital Audio Out port is not HDCP compliant, broadcasters sometimes choose to block it altogether.
thanks for the info. that sucks. I guess I will eventually have the spouse get digital cable and run an optical out from the box.

By the way, I saw you posted lag times for this new 55in TV. do you have lag times for the model I have? I usually play my 360 games with the DNM set to on as I like how it makes them look and I don't notice the lag as much other than playing a twitch shooter like MW2. Games like Fallout 3 look much better with it on.
You can use this tool and a high shutter speed camera (most new non-mobile phone Digital cameras) to find out lag times:

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.ph...&id=1229335064

What model do you have?
I believe its this model or the one ending in F7

52PFL7403D/27

I got it at Sams Club.

I may be able to measure lag in another way, Rock Band has this calibration thing that maybe I could use.
So I bought this 55" Philips tonight! I used the calibrated settings here and it looks very good so far.

I had a question regarding 24p though. Is that something that has to be enabled from the blu-ray player itself? I didn't see a setting for it.

Also for DNM, is Max basically the full 240Hz setting, Min is 120Hz and Off is standard 60Hz?
