I think viewsonic stopped providing firmware fixes for the issues on this thread... and it died. including no windows 7 fix, no blu-ray ISO (blu-ray lite), no mkv merge hearder compression fix...

Lastest Firmware was from awhile ago with only these fixes:
v1.15.09
. update User Manual

v1.15.08
. update User Manual
. correct a typo

v1.15.00
. Support manual input of Samba share
. Improve Youtube stability
. Improve Main Menu UI fluency
. OK button to enable virtual keyboard in web browser
. use Netflix package "netflix-2.0.4-13"
. Automatic firmware check

v1.14.10
. Modify SDK 384 to do HDMI initialization (fix HDMI compatibility issue)

Nothing really, it works.

Guys, what do you use to clean out movie metadata and get subtitles? I use MCM but subtitles is now a premium option. Wondering if there is a good software for getting the IMDB and subtitles.

Thanks

"v1.15.00
. Support manual input of Samba share"

So, has anyone tried this? My current firmware I think is in the 1.16's now. Any progress on the samba shares? I haven't bothered to try since August or so. Got an external USB drive plugged straight in now. It works, but it is a bit slow, transferring videos from my computers to that drive.

Hello everyone,

Just picked up two VMP75s for our bedroom and livingroom TVs. Primary use is for Netflix and playing music and DVD rips off the house NAS, a DNS-323.

So far I really like the device, Netflix playback quality is great, and have no problems at all browsing or playing from the NAS via uPNP. I did have a question though.

A few pages back Hoary was talking about the thumbnail views when browsing media files. I was wondering if there was a way to change the actual FOLDER thumbnail. So, for instance when I connect to the NAS and goto the general Movies folder, instead of just the generic blue icon with all the movie folder names it would display the DVD coverart from each individual movie subfolders.

Also, anyone else having problems with not being able to turn off subtitles with rips? When I playback the DVD rips from the NAS they are always on, even though I have them disabled on the VMP75. When I play the rips using my PS3 the subtitles do not show unless I select them on.

Thanks!

I would think that the only way to do this is through some hacking but it seems that nobody tried to hack VMP75.

I have subtitles disabled by default in settings and they don't show up unless I enable 'em while watching.

Thanks for your reply Hoary. I know the Western Digital Live has the ability to display coverart as the folder icon as long as there is an associated JPG in each movies folder, similar to adding album art for an MP3, etc. I just wasn't sure if there was a way to do it with the VMP75. If not, it would be a nice feature to add/hack to make browsing the movie selection more fun

The subtitles thing really has me stumped. No matter what I set on the VMP75 the subtitles ALWAYS show up on my DVD rips. Playing the same files on my PS3 or PC the subtitles do not appear unless I turn them on in the software. On my VMP75 I have the subtitles not only turned off for the movie, but in the general system settings as well. No idea why they are still showing up.

I guess I'll try my luck with the infamously helpful Viewsonic support :/

Out of curiosity can I ask what format files your DVD rips are that the subtitles are working correctly?

Stillbjorn, I have no problem browsing and playing files from my Windows7 Pro PC, as long as they are in the default Windows public shared location for movies, images, etc

I have mix, some as VIDEO_TS folders and some as ISO images, NTSC and PAL. I used DVDFab for my collection.

May I ask what firmware version you are on?
They broke down a lot of DVD playback in 01.14 and 01.15, but latest 01.16 seems to be much better.

I RMA'd my Viewsonic shortly after it was first released (actually 2 of them, bcz I exchanged the 1st one thinking it was defective and a 2nd would be OK)

With that said - I don't have one to try this on - but I've seen the subtitles issue on a couple other Boxes and toggling the setting on and off in the box's main settings (maybe with a reboot in between also) fixed it

It's a long shot but it won't take but a minute or two to try - hope it works on the VMP75 for you also - good luck

I am running 01.16.2.21, the newest the box says is available. The problem is occuring with raw VIDEO_TS\\.vob ripped files, and is happening on both of the VMP75s I have. I haven't tried any other format, maybe I will reformat one of the rips to .mp4 and see if it still happens. Because its happening on both VMP75s I'm inclined to think its a file/rip format issue, but it doesn't happen at all when streaming the same files to my PS3.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried doing this, enabling subtitles in the main system config, rebooting, then disabling them again. Unfortunately it didn't work

Oddly enough though, when I enabled subtitles, I noticed that when playing the file and hitting the 'subtitile' button on the remote to bring up the audio menu, the menu still shows 'OFF', and I am unable to hit right/left to turn the titles to 'ON' (even though they are still showing), or change the color/size of the words. I AM able to change the audio track to another language, etc, but subtitles just aren't working correctly for some reason.

I just happened to browse over to the Viewsonic website and saw the latest firmware they have for direct download (for USB updating) is 01.16.04.21.35, which is different than the Viewsonic built in updater (it says 01.16.2.21). Anyone know which is newer?

I'm assuming (by standard numbering conventions) that 16.2 would be newer than 16.04, but who knows, and i'm really searching for a solution here other than re-encoding my ENTIRE movie image collection while stripping off the subtitles. :/

Mine shows 01.16.02.21 and I have a file, which I downloaded from the website around the time I updated the device, showing the same version - VMP75_v01.16.02.21.35.zip.
So, the VMP75_v01.16.04.21.35.zip is definitely newer and I expect it soon to be available through device interface (if you don't want to update using USB).

As the matter of fact, they also updated the Release Notes:

v1.16.04
. Fix lock-up of "log in" selection

v1.16.03
. Add prompting message when coming back from YouTube XL
. OK button to switch HD/SD (if HD is available for that video) in full screen mode

v1.16.02
. Store user's settings in cookies
. Keypad '0' for space

v1.16.01
. Improved Youtube XL response time
. Fix weather issue (wrong temperature/blank city name)
. Support ViewSonic Wifi dongle (VID/PID=27F1/0543)

v1.16.00
. Support Youtube/XL

Looks like YouTube now available also in HD.

hi everyone,

yup, i didnt get the warning on this device hence i have one now. i have a dilemma on Netflix streaming. I have updated the media player to its latest firmware (16.04 something) and still the Netflix problem remains. I called Netflix and was instructed to deactivate and activate. Did several times but the problem still exists. I downsize the tv system to 720, still the problem is still there. Is there a way to upgrade the NFlix software in that device?

im so frustrated because i am impressed with the Netflix quality of video from the bits and pieces this device is showing me. Any suggestion aside from dumping the device and getting another?

thank you.

Exactly what issue are you having? The Netflix streaming works perfectly on all 3 devices I've seen (two @ home and one at friends). Actually i'd say its far better than streaming on my XBOX360 or my friends integrated TV app. My only issue still remains the bug with subtitles, never had any Netflix problems. Maybe just try an exchange for new unit?

anyone know if you can play video using HDMI but play audio using the component cable?

Yes you can. I originally had mine setup with video through HDMI to TV and audio out to my receiver with the component (old receiver doesn't have HDMI). I've since upgraded that to audio out through the optical (much better btw) and am still using HDMI for video to TV directly.

thanks! i just got this, and im using it now strickly with the component cable. when i get home ill test this out. i have a PS3 already set to use my main form of entertainment. i plan to use this box with a monitor in my room. just to clarify, this can be achieved in the audio settings correct? its not automatic?

I'm a little confused by what you're asking here, but as long as you have stereo audio (so optical out is disabled) and HDMI video out selected in the settings you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure that was the default on my boxes. I also have a PS3, and find myself using the VMP75 to stream Netflix b/c of the excellent picture quality and MUCH lower power consumption/noise. Plus it saves my PS3 for gaming

Ive recently purchased a VMP75 and I'm not overly impressed, The video quality is excellent and I like the idea of the streaming web based stuff netflix, youtube ect , but primary use it as a media player off my freenas server. The part that doesn't impress me is the GUI I see when surfing through my media files on my home server or any folder for that matter. I must confess I am a PBO owner who has extensively modified my box so that it shows the folder and thumbnail icons for each movie. By using/modifying the firmware from similar boxes to work with the pbo, my pbo is now running the Mede8er software load. The original pbo firmware is kinda boring/basic like the VMP is. The part that does impress me is the use of wireless keyboard and web related content. Is there a possibility of pulling from the wdtv firmware and adding to the VMP75 firmware and is anybody here that talented?

Is it worth setting up the audio optical out? or will the hdmi work as good?

EVO are you encoding your DVD's with DVD shrink? Ive had a similar subtitle problem on other players while using DVD shrink to encode.

To everyone here thank you for the helpful posts I wouldn't have gotten up and running so quickly.
i gotta agree with you there man, the UI is pretty boring, however, i didnt get the box to stare at a nice UI, i got it to watch stuff. and it does the job well. so far anyways. it would be nice to use something like YAMJ. maybe in the future?
It would be nice. Ive been using Tvixie which is a pretty simple gui builder for the Mede8er Video wall. It collects all that movie info and puts it inside the folders with your movies. This makes a well categorized movie collection with pretty pictures. (It keeps the kids happy & they can find their movies easier). Realistically its doesn't really matter the VMP seems to work fine even with no movie thumbnails. Now the only choice left is which player goes upstairs and which one stays with the home theater ....the Internet & youtube or the pretty movie picture one.

Anybody knows why i see the subtitles only in plain text with my Viewsonic VMP75? (no italic, no bold). No matter if the subtitle is srt, ssa, ass, smi, txt... I use subtitle workshop for saving in differents formats but nothing! I have the latest firmware (1.16.something)

Thanks!

I updated VIA USB when I was just lookin' around the Viewsonic webpage and noticed that a newer looking firmware was available by USB but not by checking "online".

After installing this one, my DHCP networking doesn't work.
I'm hoping, that by going back to the VMP75_v01.16.02.21.35.zip firmware it will bring it back. (

It took me forever to get this thing to share, but found out that by removing Windows Live Essentials from my Win7 PC, that I could stream from my DHCP enabled network,.

If anyone has this firmware, I'd really appreciate it if they could send it off to me.

Thanks so much! Great forum.

David,

I should have a firmware you asking for at home (will take a look tonight), but from my experience you cannot go back on VMP-75. It's probably a limitation posed by Netflix.

Nevertheless, I do have latest firmware on mine (also updated using USB) and do not have any problems with DHCP. I would suggest you to try resetting the device multiple times using GUI and hardware button on the back.

I see that the VMP75 is no longer available for sale and Viewsonic has marked it a archived product. I guess there will be no more firmware updates. It's a shame, I'm really happy with it and was looking forward to more functionality being added.

I just noticed this as well. Hopefully some creative programmer will come up with a custom firmware (similar to the WD model) that will add even more functionality and address any outstanding issues. I've look around, and couldn't seem to find any replacement model either; I wonder if Viewsonic is just getting out of the game?

My dog mistook the remote for my VMP75 for a chew toy. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Or does anyone happen to have a spare from a unit that went bad?

Contact Viewsonic customer support...

I searched the web and found nothing about this issue, so this is for anyone who has encountered the same issue with a VMP75...

One day my VMP75 just froze and the LED started flashing red and green. The device doesn't come with a Reset button and you have to apply the Factory Reset through the Setup menu... which I couldn't because there was no signal at startup.

So this is how I got it back... so simple...

Just downloaded the latest firmware from Viewsonic [ [URL=http://www.viewsonic.com/support/downloads/drivers/?prod_name=vmp75[/URL] ] ...at this time version 1.16.04.21.35

Unzipped the two files onto the root of an USB flashdrive and put it in the bare VMP75 (no hard drive, no LAN cable).

Powered on and waited until the device restarted a couple of times.

That's all. The VMP75 automatically installed the firmware ... and powered back on alright. Just reconfigured it and now I can watch my ISOs again!
