TM 1 & 2 we're done by Jaffe when he was at singletrac.
TM 3 & 4 Sony gave the IP to new blood after singletrac dissolved to start other private studios. They were horrible, especially because "real physics" was the new tag line late in the PS1 generation and they went to it. TM isn't really fun when you car is somersaulting in the air every jump and ending up upside down because of real physics. Or when you can't pull a 180 mid air, or do many arcade action like stunts. Plus they slapped Rob Zombie into the game.
TM: Black (to be included as a digital PS2 download) was Jaffe back when Sony handed the IP to his studio Incognito. It was original arcade TM but darker, faster and more gritty. Later they released a online version, but it was just more of a add on, and had some issues (mainly to little online support of the PS2). Jaffe left there for Sony Santa Monica to do God of War; and Incognito did Twisted Metal Head On for the PSP which was a true sequel / re-imagining of TM2. If you have a BC PS3 or PS2 around, try it out. It's cheap, fun, and has a bunch of re-imagined TM2 levels. It's a real good pickup game to get you ready for TM:PS3.
This one appears to be a cross of TM2/Black/HO, but with the focus on deep, fun online MP (a first). That's a great thing.
