I had to return my 47LD455. IPS panel is just inappropriate for me. Low contrast and poor black level turns movie watching in torture.

Personally though I've been using 1360x768 ... most of the time I don't even have it connected , using it mainly as a TV.

Thanks! Just to double check, this is through the VGA/D-Sub connection instead of HDMI right?

For example, let's say I put on a completely black background with grey or green text on it. Will the black not appear black? Will the text color not be as different from the background as it should be and thus make the reading less pleasant?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Easiest way to observe this is to turn off all the light sources in your room and display an all black screen (which not the same as when it is off or in standby). You'll notice that the screen will be greyish rather than black.

It's not that important if you're using the set with the lights on.

Yes ... VGA/D-SUB connection only.

Can anyone link me to a 4:4:4 test, I was using HDMI -> HDMI with my 6870 and it's looks good but I heard that doesn't support 4:4:4 so I used a fix involving downloading a .inf and updating the drivers etc, rebooted and it looks no different, I then used a HDMI -> DVI converter and the text I think looks the same, honestly I'm a bit daft I can't really tell. I tried using this: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0#post19349700 but it was convoluted so I didn't bother, also red text does not look fuzzy.
Another strange thing is that some i's and l's on some words on some websites have a green/yellow tint/pixel line going down the sides, screenshot below:

Notice the "i" in "questions" and "settings and "l" in "optimal".

Also, it appears to be an IPS panel (37LD450) by the product code but when I do a knuckle test it leaves a trail, little confused.
Thankyou.
Quick update to my question, I believe I am in 4:4:4 using this HDMI -> HDMI/DVI Splitter as text can't really get any better from where I'm looking, looks like a monitor really but the green thing still persists on some text (very rare) and on only some websites, might not be a problem on my side at all really.

And aye, no idea if it's IPS or not, product code has the famous "W" but my knuckle still leaves a trail behind, any advice on that would be fantastic thankyou.

Thankyou.

Knuckle test doesn't mean much. Do the loupe test to be sure.
Can you give me more information on the "loupe" test? Can't seem to find anything on it unfortunately.

A jeweler's loupe is a magnifying glass that they use to closely examine precious stones like diamonds. It's that little thing they put in one eye to examine the stones. To check your LCD panel, use a magnifying glass or the zoom on your digital camera to closely examine the pixel pattern on your tv. Hence the "loupe test".

Using my eyes I can see the pattern layout is like this:

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Is that IPS? Pardon my ignorance, I know little about this subject.

Damn you got good eyes That looks like an S-IPS panel which is what you want. Still, I'd grab a magnifying glass just to be sure.

Fantastic! Thankyou, I do wear glasses with magnification so it surely helped but it's quite clear it's the ((((( pattern, thankyou very much.

hello, guys.

i am looking at the 42lk450. what has the reliability of these been ?

thanx
I have a LG 37450 IPS and I'm using a Giada CUBE-N3-D2OB Intel Atom 330 CPU NVIDIA ION connected with HDMI and it seems like the resolution is wrong.

Here's what I'm talking about. I also had this same problem when I connected my old PC system using DVI-HDMI.

Is that an LD or LK 450? Could your source have a resolution that is not supported by the LG or vice versa? Is this still a DVI->HDMI connection or is it HDMI->HDMI and if so, is it a resolution that is supported by the HDMI cable? Older HDMI cables might not support the newer resolutions. Can you set your LG to Just Scan (for 1:1 pixel matching)?

It is the LD450. I have two PC. One I use a DVI->HDMI cable. The other PC I use a HDMI ->HDMI connection. Both connection have the same problem. I use the same cable for my PS3 and Patriot Media Box and have no such problems.

edit: I just set use the Just Scan option and all is well again. Thank you sir

You're welcome. Glad it was a simple fix. You posted pics looked like overscan which is what made me think of it. I use Just Scan all of the time.

i bought my mom a LG 32ld350 and set it up for her...few surprises with this set
  • LG Panel, back grill confirms this as does W on box (cccW)
  • super macro picture shows the pixels to be differently shaped than S-IPS
  • no smearing or ghosting like VA panels and touching screen does not leave smear like VA panels
  • enabling DIVX XVID MKV works on this set but password was 0413 instead of 0000
  • additional picture mode Natural Picture (was removed on all Q1-Q3 LG sets and now back in)
  • picture seems a tiny bit more pixelated than my 42ld450 probably because pixel formation isn't as tight as Super IPS but text and everything is still very easy to read

H-IPS? not sure what to call this IPS version but its not Super IPS - found more info and it lines up with the H-IPS picture http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9#post18608339

Sorry to dig up and old post that's somewhat off topic, but since there's no official LD350 thread, I decided to post here.

I bought a 32LD350 as well that has the same code and pixel pattern as yours. Your LD350 probably looks more pixelated because it's a 720p vs 1080p on your LD450. H-IPS is a newer variant of IPS panel and it supposedly offers advantages over S-IPS, such as higher contrast ratios due to it's sub pixel layout.

Anyway, I'm fairly happy with how my 32LD350 looks after I calibrated it using my i1-displaylt. Viewing angles are relatively good for an LCD and are easily just as good as my 55LH90 (which has an S-IPS panel). I haven't tested input lag, but I have a computer hooked up to it (HDMI) and I don't notice any lag on the mouse.

Also, if you could point me in the right direction as to how you unlock the USB port, that would be nice.

need a universal remote thats compatible with tv, program it to talk with the TV (should be in the user manual)

when they are communicating on my remote i would press TV + Setup + 00018 which would bring up the LG password screen on the TV

Take the original LG remote enter either 0413 or 0000 and enter tool option 3 and set divx to 1

IPS Panel Clarification:

Just to keep it simple, e-IPS is used mainly in computer models, H-IPS in lower end LG tv's, S-IPS in mid-level LG tv's, and I think there's an AS-IPS panel that is used in the higher-end LG tv's. The pixel pattern for S-IPS is chevron-shaped (<<<<<<) and the H-IPS is squarish. I think AS-IPS is chevron-shaped as well but only in the opposite direction (>>>>).
despite the fact that H-IPS is generally used in lower-end LG TVs, everything I've read about H-IPS vs S-IPS seems to favor H-IPS slightly, although they essentially look the same.

btw, thanks jangaboo.

You could be right. I've only experienced the S-IPS (this is my first LCD) but I keep looking at my set and then some of this year's comparable sets and it just makes me glad I got mine when I did. I think the quality of the components and where their QC falls when they are assembled accounts for some of the variability that people are reporting from set to set even with the same panel type.

Interestingly enough, I bought a Sanyo 26" TV some months back and it and it's 32" version use H-IPS. The picture quality is actaully very good, although video adjusts for grayscale and limited to just a simple RGB.

For cheap TVs they are often over looked.
the pixel layout looks pretty similar to my el cheapo ($199) 26" Dynex using AUO VA panel AUO_T260XW04_V7

^How are the viewing angles on that set? That does look pretty similar...
These pixel patterns are starting to confuse me. Seems like it was a lot easier to tell them apart back a few years ago, but now it seems like a lot of them look similar. Also, most pics I've seen of H-IPS pixels, they're aligned vertically (beside each other) rather than horizontally (stacked on top of each other).
One things for sure... my LD350's viewing angles are equally good compared to my LH90 (S-IPS). From what I've read, AUO/AMVA panels perform similarly to S-PVA panels and my LD350 has much better viewing angles than any S-PVA Samsung I've owned (LN4042H, LN46A650).

The Dynex has poor viewing angles, if you stray left or right the colours drop off quite a bit same with vertical angles (Not as bad as TN panels where the image becomes unviewable but the saturation disappears on this Dynex vs the ld350 or ld450 where you can view it quite well from almost anywhere)
