you can always "learn" buttons from the factory remote that are missing in the Harmony profile. It's very simple to do in the Harmony software....

the ipod actually started working for a while for some reason last night, until the sound got all choppy and I noticed that the buffer was crapping out on me. This was connected directly with the USB cable. Not a big deal for me though as I also have a Y-cable and 1.8mm extension cable for the ipod anyways. Also, last night I was switching sources with the "Source Select" button on the remote, and the receiver froze on me completely, and restarted itself. No issues otherwise though. Love it so far and I've only had it for 2 days.

I watched a Season 3 (could have been 4) episode of 30 Rock on the day of the software release. The sound was 5.1 as detected by my 3311. The picture, however, while passable, was most definitely not HD.

Thanks batpig, it could be very simple but it is time consuming. It would be easier just to load a file with all the buttons onto Harmony One

Can I do that ?

Thanks,

Wow...I had no idea the mic was covered. Never noticed the grey sticker on mine - I just thought that was part of the mic.

I wonder how many others have made the same mistake?! Time to recalibrate my 1-week old 2310ci (closeout at Best Buy).

Uh... Just to make sure... here's a pic of mine...

My AVR was a open box, but the mic box was sealed with tape and appeared unopened and I never removed anything from the top. Do I need to remove that black felt looking disc from the top of the mic or is the "grey sticker" something that was on top of that and mine is already removed? My Yamaha's mic seems to have the same material on the mic as pictured above...

No, do not remove the felt, it is part of the mic. It is basically a dust cover over the sensor/mic capsule. Sorry I am kinda fuzzy on the is-there-a-sticker-on-the-tip-of-the-mic issue but I seem to remember a tiny thin disc of plastic/paper material stuck onto the felt on top of one of my Audyssey mics (but several of my Denons were open box). That sticker, if present, is easily removed and is obviously not part of the mic.
Out of the three mics I've had for different recievers, one had a small sticker others didn't. It may be that some get stuck to the small amount of bubble wrap the mic is wrapped in and never get seen.

Removing the material would be bad, the mic being calibrated with it there.
Oh ok, that's what I thought since my Yamaha's mic also has the same looking felt on top but just wanted to be sure I wasn't calibrating my AVRs wrong the whole time!
I just emailed Audyssey and Chris responded almost immediately and said that the felt most definitely should NOT be removed.
OK, so you're sayin I just don't have his "street cred" regarding dust felt, hmm?
OK; I just got a AVR-991 and first thing I decided to do was check for firmware updates, which there was one to apply.

Long story short the 15 minute firmware update is stuck looping at "Ether IMG" from 4 mins down to 2 mins.

When it hits two mins it will loop the arrows from 1 to 5 twice and then stop at 3 arrows and hang for a bit and restart at the 4 mins count down.

If I let it go long enough it will display "Download Fail AE".

In frustration I have pulled the plug and the machine will to back to life as normal but after a minute or two automatically go into continuing the update from 4 mins.

I can stop the machine from trying to do the finish of the update by disconnecting the network cable but then it puts a message on the machine saying no network connection or something to that effect - so pretty annoying.

Here's what I have tried:
- Doing microprocessor reset
- Disconnecting all HDMI cables
- Connecting directly into the cable modem (to avoid possible issues with a router in between)
- Tried updating late last night and this morning (in case the site hosting the firmware was overloaded)
- Different network cable
- Waited for FAILED message then press the power for 5 seconds and pull the plug and then turn it on to restart the process.

So here's my questions:
- Is there anything else I can try?
- Is this machine "bricked-ish" - since it technically still functions but can't complete the update?
- Anybody experience this themselves?
- Is there a way to get the updates through the USB port instead?

I could return the receiver, but I'd rather not have to do that yet.

I was thinking of grabbing a 3311 to power my bedroom TV setup and two additional zones in other rooms - eg. a 2.1 system for the TV, plus zone 2 and 3 both in stereo. From reading the manual, it seems there isn't a way to assign the amps this way - even though I'm only using 2.1 in the primary zone - I could only do it if zone 2 and 3 were both mono?

Just wanted to double check I was reading this correctly... I wonder if this configuration could be supported with a firmware update?
Just got my 3311 yesterday. Just got done setting it up. I have a Motorola Cable DVR for my cable hooked up via HDMI. I am curious it seems that when I watch an HD channel i lose the PLII Cinema sound. When I switch to non HD channel it goes to the PLII setting. I get more of a surround sound.. The HD channel says its 5.1 dolby. Sorry if this is a dumb question I am still learning. It seems just to go to regular stereo on the HD channels.. Any help or insight would be great. So far I am very happy with the unit. Its a world apart from my Onkyo..I am ordering the UFC fight tonight so want to make sure the sound is set up right. Have a bunch of people coming over to watch..
DD PLII is a "simulation" mode which is only needed on a 5.1 setup when a stereo 2.0 signal is received. Those HD channels that broadcast in DD 5.1 should play in Dolby Digital on your AVR. If not, press the STANDARD key when DD 5.1 is playing to return it to Dolby Digital.

You are reading it correctly. You'll need to add an external amp to provide 2.0 to both Zone 2 and Zone 3. Otherwise if you don't mind the same source to both zones, just connect an impedance matching speaker selector to the Zone 2/Amp Assign speaker posts and you'll get stereo to both zones that way.

Give the update a couple more tries. If still no joy, do the "network" reset which is similiar to the regular microprocessor reset except you hold down the (up) and (down) arrow keys on the front panel instead.

Aah, cheers, thanks for that - I'll have to consider my options. Both the other two zones are rooms with two in-ceiling speakers in each, for casual music listening - I wonder if I could get away with running these parallel in mono? I'm thinking the stereo imaging might be all out of whack anyway, due to the ceiling speakers and lack of a fixed listening position, so perhaps having to run in mono mightn't be such a loss...

Sorry, my bad. As noted a few posts back this is indeed part of the DM-A409 mic.

I don't recall ever reading about this disc nor have I ever seen it before as my earlier model mic does not have it.

Does anyone know what makes the 3311 better than the 3808 besides power? I keep reading it is not a replacement for the 3808 but everything else looks the same besides power and hdmi 1.4. I was hoping is had Better DACS but it seems as though they are the same. I am using as a pre pro so will sound be close to the same?
The 3311 (125W) is NOT better than the 3808 (130W and has better DACs), rather the 4310 replaced it and the 3311 replaces the 3310 which replaced the 2809. The 3311 offers HDMI 1.4 and will be able be Airplay upgradable. The 3311 uses the same version of Audyssey MultEQ XT as does the 3808 so as a pre-pro, yes, they would likely be very similar.

Ok, after weeks of waiting to FINALLY go through the last steps of set-up (running ethernet cable, having to order and wait for new cables, then discovering blown tweeter in center, then finally getting family out of house for a few hours....) I have at last run the audyssey as it was intended. I am looking for thoughts about the readings and how i have it set up. Please let me know if something looks askew and needs to be corrected. My room is 13x18.5 with angled/vaulted ceiling and no back wall. The surround speakers are pretty close to the main seating positions but there is really nothing I can do about that. I am using 5.1 speaker system and have used batpig et al's set up guide in conjunction with the denon manual:

distance:
all measurements are accurate (got the tape measure out but didn't get too gung ho after that)

speakers:
front were read as large so I set them to small, all others read as small

crossover:
front - meas. at 40, set to 80
center - meas at 80, left at 80
surr. - meas at 40, set to 80

bass:
low pass filter to low frequency exchange measured at 90, left at 90

amp assign:
not too sure about this one, i chose the "assign 2 channel" as it had two pictures: Pic 1-main multichannel surround 5.1; Pic 2 - showed FL, FR, sub. This seems to match my setup so this is what I chose.

The trim level on the sub read "-12" so I turned it down some (from the recommended "12 o'clock position") and am thinking I can adjust this be ear. OR is it really necessary to go back through the set up again? to my liking as necessary
post #2754 of 10210
All settings look fine with exception of ....

bass - bump back up to default of 120hz

Amp Assign - doesn't really matter for now if you don't have any speakers connected to these posts (ie Zone 2, Front B, surround back), although generally just leave at default of Zone 2. The "2-CH" setting is used when you connect a second set of front main speakers that are used for music listening only.

-12 sub trim - yes, run AUTO SETUP again. The best thing to do when running AUTO SETUP is to run it with only one position to determine what the Denon sets the sub trim to. If -12db, then you lower the sub gain to about 10 o'clock and rerun AUTO SETUP again for 1 position. As long as the sub trim is now other than -12db then you're set to run all 8 positions again otherwise, reduce the gain a bit more and rerun again.

thank you jd, i will implement those then finally be able to put the tripod away!!!!

Until you decide to try either Front height or wide .....
What would be a good replacement for the 3808 if not the 3311? Is it the 4311? If so i can't afford that so i may have messed up by selling my 3808
post #2758 of 10210
I would agree with you on the sale of the 3808 as the less expensive option would have been to get one of the new HDMI 1.4 BDPs with dual HDMI outputs which can send the HD audio to the HDMI 1.3 AVR. However, as it's sold, the 3311 would be a near comparable replacement with HDMI 1.4 capability you want.
Guess it will be the 3311 for me but still gonna look at the integra 40.2 and marantz 7005 before i decide
post #2760 of 10210
This...might be a stupid question. I've sort of been waiting to purchase a 3D Blu-Ray Player that has the dual HDMI outs (one for video, the other for audio), but I'm starting to think that with my TV and the 3311CI...I don't need that since it has 1.4a HDMI. Is that correct?
