I'm interested in using the Denon 3311CI to power a whole house system. The system I'm planning will have three zones (zone 1: 2 floor standing speakers, zone 2: 14 in-wall speakers, zone 3: 4 in-wall speakers). I won't be using the surround capabilities at all.
I'm interested in using this receiver because it seems like a good all-in-one solution. Since all 3 zones are powered, I won't need external amplifiers. And, the receiver has networking capabilities, so I won't need to buy a separate device for internet radio, etc. I know that digital sources won't be available for zone 2 and 3, and that shouldn't be an issue for us.
Is anyone else using the receiver in a similar application? I'm hoping to get some confirmation that my plan will work before I make any purchases.
I know we're not supposed to talk price BUT, if anyone is thinking of buying a refurb, there are 2 coupons floating around online for the 3311ci specifically (NEW not refurbished) and expire on 1/31/11. One is for Electronics Expo and one is for 6ave. One is for 31% and the other 33% off. 6ave comes out just a bit cheaper... . I just ordered one from 6ave yesterday and it shipped today.
Are both of these places reputable and safe to buy from? Any weird policies or anything to be aware of?

The only way all 3 zones can be powered is if you send a mono signal to Zones 2 and 3 otherwise it's stereo to only one or the other zone but not both. However, if you're not using the surround speakers, you could connect Zone 2 to the surround L/R and the Zone 3 to the surround back L/R and place the AVR in Mult Ch Stereo mode to play the same HDMI/digital stereo source in all 3 zones.

Yes. Both are Denon authorized resellers and have been for a number of years. They each have a 15-20% restock fee if you should decide to return the AVR "just because you didn't like it" although no charge if it's defective.

As jdsmoothie states, yes very reputable. I have purchased from 6ave a number of times and they have shipped to me here in L.A. from N.Y. without issue. Most recently I got the Paradigm CC-290 center speaker on a blow out sale from them.
I mentioned this to someone already else but, I'll mention it here as well, I've noticed if you use the Amazon payments options at checkout with 6ave they always ship the same day or within 24 hours at most. The times I have used their normal check out, they have always shipped in 48-72 hours. I guess they must want all the positive ratings on Amazon so they work a bit harder.
That being said, I've never had an issue with them with either checkout but like most of us, I want my gear faster .

Thanks for the advice!
If I use the surround L/R and surround back L/R, I would be stuck with one source for all three zones, right? If I use the zone 2 and zone 3 outputs (even though they're in mono), I'd be able to play different sources in each zone, I assume. I'm more interested in different sources for each zone than getting the digital sources to zones 2 and 3.
This is probably a really basic question - in my proposed setup, most of the receiver's amplifiers won't be used. Are all of the unused amplifiers going to be pulling energy? Or are they stay off when not in use?

I buy a lot of my gear from 6AVE.
They price match. If you find it cheaper
on Amazon, print a copy of the page and
bring it with you.
Very reputable dealer!
Thanks guys, that pretty much seals the deal for me. I've decided I'm going with the 3311ci, and hopefully won't have any of the problems that others have had. Will place my order with 6ave later today.
I'm looking to replace my current speakers, I currently have the Athena Point 2 bookshelf system. Nice system but I feel I could do a lot better. What I am looking to get is better sound and better pop from my mains. I'd say my play is 75%HT 25%Stereo.
I'm looking for 2 fronts, a center and 2 rears to compliment my dual 12" sunfire subs. My budget is around $1200.00.
...I too was stunned at how smooth and seamless the effect is, and how much more expansive and immersive the soundstage is. And I was surprised at how good it was for music, it really does make you feel that "auditory source width" of being in a spacious concert hall, without being distracting. Hearing is believing for sure!...
I had not noticed any posts where you'd shared such excitement about the DSX wides up till now, so I did it almost as an afterthought. "Well, the AVR has it built in, and I have these extra speakers, the guys are over, let's give it a try just for kicks..."
The manual on p.5 shows the rear speakers connected to SR and SL. When I run Audyssey, after the first measurement, the back speakers are shows on the measurement screen as "Surround" and displayed to the left and right of the viewing position. Is this ok? Or should I plugin my rear speakers in the Surround Back/Amp Assign posts?
surrounds speakers in 5.1 are NOT "rear" speakers. They are SIDE surrounds like so:
in a 6.1 / 7.1 setup you add Surround BACK speakers. the main surrounds should be plugged into SR/SL even if you physically have to place them in the "rear" due to room constraints.

So if I could (and I can) move the surround to the sides that would make for a better 5.1 experience until I buy 2 more speakers? Or is this one of those subjective preferences?

This is most likely because Amazon itself is shipping those. I recently bought from wwstereo using Amazon payments. I had asked for double boxed and that is when I noticed that the outer box actually had Amazon logo on it. So, I think Amazon is in the distribution business for some of these retailer. I remember wwstereo telling me that they cannot guarantee double boxing as it was from a "different" warehouse than the local one....and once I saw Amazon on the box...it made sense. The Denon product itself was shipped to Amazon warehouse as per the label on the actual receiver boxing.

If you can move the surround speakers to the side as indicated in the picture, you should do it anyway. With regards to two more speakers...then the choice would be between using them as surround rears or using them as wide. In general, the recent discussion seems to be gravitating towards using the other two channels as wides rather than rears.

Correct. That's the benefit of using the Zone speaker posts as they allow for independent sources from the main zone. With your configuration although you won't be using 3 of the 7 amps, you will still be drawing on the single power supply with all your additional speakers in Zones 2 and 3.
How much better is the avr-3311ci then the avr-1910? Im thinking about upgrading
Should be some improvement as you're going from Audyssey MultEQ (1910) to MultEQ XT (3311) as well as a nicer GUI and networking and USB capability. Use coupon code LSDA0110 at Electronics Expo and get 34% off MSRP thru 1/31.

Yes. The closer you can get to the diagram's recommended angles, the more optimized the setup will be.
I was thinking about upgrading to this receiver. I found a good price on it and would be a nice upgrade from my older Onkyo. I found the Onkyo 3008 for 400.00 more and not sure if I should stick with this, or if that get the Onkyo. Any sugestions?

The onk 3008 is more comparable to the 4311... it is 9ch and has multeq xt 32
I picked up one of these receivers (3311CI) recently to replace my dying NAD T762. The only thing I was wary about was the amps being up to the task of powering my 5 6 ohm speakers (my center channel measures closer to 8 ohms though). I am happy to say that the Denon doesn't break a sweat, even when I tested it with the Dark Knight Blu-Ray at reference volume. (I will probably never play it that loud again, but I wanted to stress test it)
Surround processing has come a long way since I bought my last receiver 7 years ago. Very happy with the Denon. Thanks to batpig et al also for the helpful information.

Agreed. The surround sounds far more
robust than my prior Denon 3808CI that
I owned for the past few years.
However, part of that reason could be my
ignorance towards Audyssey. Back when
I only did 1 seat setting. This time around
I did 6, moving the mic around the center
and 4 corners of the couch.
^Ron, the surround effects of the 3311 irt surround and surround rear speakers are basically the same as in the 3808 irt "basic" MultEQXT processing. A big step forward with surround effects, when listening below reference, came with DynEQ, offered as an Audyssey Firmware upgrade for the 3808 and standard in the 3311. Also in your 3311 you have the new Audyssey-developed DSX options, so you can enhance the envelopment surround effect with front wides.
