I have been using an HDMI > DVI cable with no issues from many different sources, including DISH VIP 622, Moto 7232 DVRs, various BD and DVD players, but with the 3311, I get "not supported mode". I imagine there might be some settings I can adjust, but with no video signal I can't see the setup menu! I am in a Catch-22 situation here. I have tried processor reset and pulling the cables, but still nothing.

Is there anything I can try before spending $80 on something that "generally" fixes problems with older TVs? For what a 3311 sells for, I would think it should be able to talk to any TV ever made without an additional purchase.

Unfortunately HDMI issues effect high end AVRs just as much as they do with the mid range 3311CI so cost has nothing to do with it ... HDMI has never been a solid standard. Hopefully whatever replaces it in the future will be more reliable.

^^^ Well is there anyone who can give a more definitive answer than "...it generally resolves issues..."? Has anyone tried DVI Detective with a Samsung DLP set and had it fix the problem?

FWIW I have no problems with my Pioneer Elite Pro CRT-RPTV from 2003 works well with HDMI-DVI. Native res is 1080i. I find best seems to be to feed whatever res from source (for me that's either 1080i or 480p) and let the TV scale it. I guess it is a function of the EDID that gets passed.

I apologize for asking again, but it does not sound like anyone has tried.

It works on my Droid Incredible, but not very elegantly. It's basic disk mode. You have to manually navigate the MP3 folder directory structure on the display or onscreen menu. You might be better off with some kind of media server app on it? A quick search turned up Twonky, but I cant vouch for it.

I'm really enjoying my 3311. Audyssey really makes a difference from older models. I ordered a cheap little speaker system (Klipsch HD 500 Open Box Ebay $300) to use with my old 3802. I'm going to be setting everything up in my bedroom as soon as it arrives. I'm about to have surround sound in both rooms, which is what I need, to go with whole house DVR. I sold some 12 year old Bose speakers on ebay, which pretty much covered the new, little speaker package. I just hope it's loud enough. I'm not a wild man, but I do like to crank it up occasionally.

So I've connected the pre-outs on the Denon to the inputs on the amp using RCA cables, and used a trigger out from the Denon to the trigger in on the B&K. I believe that I've hooked up everything correctly because I have no problem getting audio (or video for that matter). But whenever I turn on my system, I hear a loud pop which I never used to hear before hooking up the amp. Although the pop is not very loud, I'm worried that over time it may damage the B&W speakers. I've tried disconnecting the trigger but that did not resolve the problem. But when I turn down the input controls at the back of the amp, the pop is not as loud anymore. But I feel that by turning down the input controls, I'm also not using the full potential of the amp.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I could eliminate the popping sound I am hearing? Do I need to ditch the B&K amp and try a different amp. The Emotiva XPA-5 appears to be on sale right now and I could try one for 30 days to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for your help.

Here's one that a number have used with success in eliminating the pop, http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Energy-S...ef=pd_sim_hi_1. I use one with my older Carver amp that doesn't have a remote trigger, and it works flawlessly!

Dark Rider, I want to thank you for giving me the suggestion above which has completely taken care of the popping sound problem with my speakers. It was a much cheaper fix than buying a new amp, and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your recommendation. Thank you very much. The Power Strip works like a charm. It took a little while to figure out the right setting, but now it works great.

Good fix.

Ok, so i was just playing some music pretty loud (0db) for about 3 minutes and all of the sudden my Receiver shut off and the standby Red light began to flash for about 2 minutes until i decided to press the button, then it stopped. Everything turned back on again no problems but it freaked me out a bit. Should i be concern about this? is this "normal" has anyone here had that happen before?

The AVR shut down in protection mode because the speakers were demanding too much power at that volume. Limit your volume to -5db or -10db maximum and you should be good to go.

Time to get the emotiva. Thanks JDS.

but my subwoofer doesn't seem to kick on Dolby and DTS movies like it did a couple of weeks ago when the Audyssey settings were new. I did a restore through Sound Perameter, but it didn't seem to help much. I'm getting a lot more bass watching movies from my little Klipsch mini system in my bedroom. Since that system only has tiny satellite speakers, it may just be overly bassy, having to completely rely on the subwoofer for low pitch sound. Audyssey probably has a better ear than I, and I'm probably just unaccustomed to a system that sounds like it's supposed to?

Try swapping out the sub coax digital cable with a RCA composite video (yellow) cable and see if that makes any difference. If yes, then replace the current cable. Also make sure your speakers are set to SMALL with minimum of 80hz crossovers.

I had been using a Monster subwoofer cable with my old Denon 3802. However, the gray, protective jacket on the cable had frayed on both ends, so I replaced it with a Monoprice subwoofer cable before hooking everything up to my new 3311. I will try trimming the frayed ends and switching back to the Monster. It was ridiculously expensive back in the day, before I knew what a ripoff Monster can be. I will report back.

Edit: I have a ton of the those yellow video cables around too for testing. I will check those as well. I will play a scene from gladiator with each configuration to determine the optimum sound output.

Update...all of the cables sound the same.

Aren't Monster Cables guaranteed for life? I believe they are.

I am running two subs on my setup and have one connected with a "sub woofer" cable which was a tad expensive, and the other with just a regular generic RCA connector type cable. I swapped them out and connected each one individually, I couldn't tell any difference. I also ran Audyssy and it calibrated them exactly the same each time.

Trying to access component video (red, green, blue) on my 991 is there a way to access this without running a component cable to the Tv?

TIA

Sure ... any analog video input can be upconverted to HDMI with "Video Convert" set to ON.

Help!!!! I just received my 3311 back from service where they had to replace the hdmi board. When I reconnect, I only can get audio...no video. I have reset the processor, as well check to see if it may be the cable going out to my projector, but that is fine. Am I missing something? Do I need to change something in the receiver settings? I can't even get the gui to display on the screen.

If you reset the microprocessor, then connecting an HDMI input should be plug-n-play. Try doing the network reset (ie. press/hold the UP/DOWN arrow buttons on the front panel while powering on the AVR ... hold for at least 4-5 seconds before releasing). Try using a shorter cable to the PJ to test with or connect to a different display/TV. If still no joy, it's likely got to go back for further repair.

Hmm. I don't think you need the GUI. The display on the Denon shows everything you need. You should try changing some of the settings. I had a similar problem about a year ago with my 3311. Some settings were messed up. Can't recall what the problem was right now. I'll look into it tomorrow when I get home from work. It's 1:46 AM here in Denmark :-P.
Meanwhile, try this page. It's THE manual for Denon recievers. Has helped me a lot!! batpigworld(.)COM / fadq . html (change the address )

Is there a way to finagle a WiFi connection to the 3311 with perhaps some sort of WiFi dongle with an ethernet on the end of it..? My desktop did not have a wifi card so I use a USB dongle with a little wifi thingy on the end . Works great, would be nice if you could plug these into the receiver...or better yet have an AVR with wifi.

Or are there new models of ANY Brand AVR that are WiFi compatible to do the things we do with the 3311 as get our music from our home network etc.

No wifi USB dongle capability for Denon AVRs, although Onkyo AVRs offer this feature. You can use a wireless bridge to connect to the wireless router.

Try unplugging avr from wall socket and the hdmi cabes including the one to tv for 10 min. plug back in and power on tv then avr and then source and if no luck try another micro reset.

Tks.

Had the video select on source that I wanted, like when I use composite yellow cable, instead of source that it is on, for component.

I decided to switched hdmi inputs to go in order (1-4) right to left since I had the cabinet pulled out . After this I could not receive video (audio was fine) from either wd media player or Sat box. I tried the original inputs still no video just audio.

I remember the advice to unplug for 10 minutes so I unplugged the power bar for 10 min. and voila video back. Thought I would share for any one else that may incur these symptoms.

Thanks Batpig. I did figure out n doing this that for some reason on my AVR the Game 1 and Game 2 HDMI's were not assigned to a HDMI source and fixed that. Unfortunately the Sat/Cbl input was assigned correctly and still didn't work. I then started moving around my working Apple TV cable and it would not work in other ports either, where it did work initially in the V. Aux input. I verified all inputs were assigned as HDMI and still couldn't get the cable box to work.

I ended up calling Denon support and all agree that this is a HDMI handshaking issue. They emailed me the following instructions, which are similar but a little more involved than the instructions in the FAQ regarding turning the devices on in the correct order. This is what they sent:

Reverse HDMI Handshake

1. Power ON all equipment.
2. While equipment is powered on, disconnect ALL HDMI cables. Both ends of ALL HDMI Cables. Emphasis on ALL.
3. Turn off all equipment.
4. Unplug separately each device from the power. You cannot use a multi power strips main power reset button. Devices must be powered up one at a time in later steps.
5. Wait Thirty Minutes.
6. Reconnect all HDMI cables.

THESE next few steps are important. You will have to do these one at a time. MUST be done in THis order.

7. FIRST. Plug in, power on, and verify input on the TELEVISION SET.
8. Next, Plug and power on receiver.
9. Select source on the receiver of the device you plan on powering up next. (I.E. DVD, BP, SAT/CBL)
10. Plug and power on selected device. Wait 30 Secs.
11. Power off device normally.

12. Repeat steps 9-11)

This completes a HDCP communications reset.

I will do this tonight and report back. I know no one here has a magic answer to HDMI handshake issues, but if I can post the resolution with my particular units, perhaps those in the future can find it easier with a search, and go straight to the optical connection for audio if need be.

Thanks again
Scott

I brought this over from the Denon 12 series avs forum. A complete HDMI reset. Worth a try.

I recently noticed a static-like (white noise?) sound coming from my center speaker when I switch my 991 source to play my AppleTV2. Sounds similar to tuning a very weak radio station; gets louder when I crank up the volume; and intermittently cuts in and out. Thinking the ATV was bad, I completely disconnected it -- yet I still get the same noise with nothing connected to the source!!!

Some general info:

Nothing has changed or been touched with my setup in months.
No static from the other connected sources (TV, DVD).
Static only from front, center speaker.
All sources connected via HDMI

Thanks for any help!

Swap a front speaker with the center speaker to determine if the issue is with the speaker or with the AVR.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see how swapping the speaker could make any difference since the static only occurs with the one source. No static whatsoever when TV or DVD selecetd.
