The **Official** Denon 3311CI/ 991 Owner's Thread NO PRICE TALK - Page 310

Just wanted to share my Audessey MultiEQ XT Results

Room Dimension: 15.5 ft L x 10.9 ft W

First Attempt

Speaker Set-up
01 Front : Small (FL +1.0 dB); (FR +1.0 dB)
02 Center : Small (-4.5 dB)
03 Surround : Small (SL -1.5 dB); (SR -2.0 dB)
04 Subwoofer : Yes (-12.0 dB)
05 SW Mode : Norm
06 FL : 9.0 ft
07 FR : 9.2 ft
08 C : 7.2 ft
09 SL : 7.4 ft
10 SR : 7.8 ft
11 SW : 8.5 ft
12 Cr. Over: Adv
13 Cr. F : 40Hz - changed to 80Hz
14 Cr. C : 80Hz
15 Cr. S : 40Hz - changed to 80Hz
16 Cr. LFE : 120Hz

MULTEQ:
MultEQ: Audessey
MultEQ: Byp L/R
MultEQ: Flat
MultEQ: OFF

SVS Subwoofer settings before and during the calibration as follows:
Gain: 12 o"clock
Phase: 0
Crossover: 120Hz
Cossover switch: Disabled
Calibration locations: 8

8---*---7 (couch)
3---1---2 (foot of the bed/behind the couch)
---------
6---4---5 (bed)

***Subwoofer channel level is at -12.0 dB. Decided to redo the calibration by adjusting the gain of the sub to 9 o'clock position. At -12.0 dB, it is at the maximum negative setting that Audyssey can set--which may actually need to be even lower, but that's as far Audyssey can go. I believe ideal target for the sub after running the calibration is between -3 to +3 dB, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Second Attempt

Speaker Configuration Set-up
Front : Small
Center : Small
Surround : Small
Subwoofer : Yes

Distance Check
Front L : 8.6 ft
Front R : 8.8 ft
Center : 6.8 ft
Surround L : 7.6 ft
Surround R : 8.0 ft
Subwoofer : 8.1 ft

Channel Level Check
Front L +0.5 dB
Front R 0.0 dB
Center -5.0 dB
Surround L -1.0 dB
Surround R -1.5 dB
Subwoofer -2.0 dB

Crossover Check
Front : 40Hz - changed to 80Hz
Center : 90Hz - changed to 80Hz
Surround : 40Hz - changed to 80Hz

MULTEQ:
MultEQ: Audessey
MultEQ: Byp L/R
MultEQ: Flat
MultEQ: OFF

SVS Subwoofer settings before and during the calibration as follows:
Gain: 9 o"clock
Phase: 0
Crossover: 120Hz
Cossover switch: Disabled
Calibration locations: 8

8---*---7 (couch)
3---1---2 (foot of the bed/behind the couch)
---------
6---4---5 (bed)

I would think this is a better result than the first attempt. Subwoofer gain was adjusted to 9 o'clock position before calibration, rendering a result of -2.0 dB channel level. Any thoughts?

two things...

1) you should put the center xover back to 90hz...

2) i see your center is closer than your mains... is it possible that you could move that "back" so that it is either equal to or farther away than the mains?

other than that, looks reasonable to me... more importantly, how does it sound?

Oh...ok. I will do that. Thanks. I just thought that the LCR and Surrounds should all be at 80 Hz crossover level.

For reference, below is a picture of the center speaker. If I move the center back, won't the sound coming from the center bounce/reflect on the rack? This is why I moved it to the edge, to avoid sound reflection.

Oh! Without a doubt...even without calibration, the difference in sound is night and day from my previous receiver (Denon AVR-1509). But after calibration, the soundstage is a lot better and my sub sounds even better now. My issue with my previous receiver was the result of the sub was always so boomy. But it's not the same this time around. I also changed the location of the sub by placing it right under the right speaker. That may have also contributed perhaps.

yea, if they are "lower" than 80hz, it's generally a good idea to raise them to 80hz... unfortunately, if they are "higher" than 80hz, and you lower them, you are leaving a hole in your eq (although it may sound good anyway, it's not a huge difference between 80hz and 90hz)...

ah, gotcha... yes, you want to leave it pushed forward to the front of whatever shelf you have it on... pushing it back is going to cause issues, you've got the right idea there...

given your setup with the mains wall mounted, i'd say that's about the best you can do there, so i wouldn't worry about it...

cool! "sounds good" is ALWAYS a good thing...

now, you need to get yourself a rug...

So tonite i tried to listen to an internet radio station which led to an hour of trying ot make it work . It worked about a week ago, tonite nada. I can not even look through a list of the providers. what i can do is access the reciever from my denon app or my computer . I can not connect to denon to check firware either.

i have tried manual ip adress, multiple microprocessor resets, reset my modem . Everything else on my network works as usual.

Is it possible denons server is down??
^^
Try doing a network reset .... press/hold the UP/DOWN arrow buttons on the front panel while powering on the AVR.

I'm getting a lot of motion judder with fast action sports on certain channels when piping through the Denon (the NCAA tournament on CBS). I notice that if I change the video mode setting to "Game" instead of "Auto" that it slightly improves. Is there anything else I can adjust? The Judder goes away when I connect directly to my TV, but I don't want to lose my on-screen gui if there is any way around it. The judder issue isn't apparent during movies and it also seems much reduced on ESPN HD games versus CBS HD. I can also reduce the resolution of my DirecTV box to 720 from 1080i, and it seems to help.

Update: Turning off scaling seems to help as well. I had been upconverting everything to 1080P. Turning conversion completely off of course eliminates the on-screen gui, so I left it on but turned off scaling. It's much less noticeable but still not as good as by-passing the receiver.

I use a W7 media center with a Nvidia 9400 video card. Now whenever I start playing a video in either media center or in a video player (either full screen or partial) the entire display goes blank for a few seconds and then returns and functions normally. I can pause/start the video without resetting the HDMI. But if I close the player or stop the video in media center the HDMI is once again reset. Prior to the HDMI board replacement my Denon did not reset like this. Denon service said this is normal behavior but could not explain why it did not occur with my original HDMI board.

Who knows, perhaps a different video card might not have this issue.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions.

Problem solved:

The "video Mode" was set to "Auto". This apparently enables the automatic changing of the display mode based on HDMI info, from "Movie" to "Game" and back. Can't remember how it was set prior to sending in for repair. I now have it set to "Movie" (auto off). The mode now stays static and my display doesn't go blank.

I'm really happy this was just a setting issue.

I just bought an open box 991 off of Audiogon, so before setting up everything I wanted to power it on and connect to the internet for any firmware updates.

Anyhow when I tried to power it on, it the power buton flashes green, the display says"avr" something then sat/cable, then the unit shuts off with the power button flashing red.

Is this protection mode? Do I need to take it in for repair? any idea of possible repair cost if I do?

thanks

Yes red flashing means protection mode.

If flashing quickly every half second generally means speaker wire short or two wires touching each other. Check your wires and connections and make sure they are not touching each other.

If flashing slower every 2 seconds it generally means you are running 4 ohm speakers and the volume being to high and sending it in protection mode.

If it's not 1 of these issues it is probably an internal electrical issue and you should contact your reseller for a refund.

Adding; Check all speakers and avr terminal post and make sure their are no new or old speaker strands causing a short.

Just went through a similar issue. My AVR was going into thermal protection mode.

I would disconnect everything from the AVR except the AC connection. Perform a power up reset as described in the operators manual. If following this you still get the flashing red ring fault your AVR needs repair.

thanks for the replies. I haven't connected any speakers or components yet. Just the power cord. I will check for any stray speaker wire strands that may be shorting, but I am not holding my breath.

I have sent a note to the reseller and am awaiting reply. I will have to locate my nearest Denon service center just in case

Who ever sold this to you is real piece of work.

I am waiting for a reply from the seller. He does have a 100% rating after 3 transactions, 2 as a seller. If I do not get any response, I may post his info, so buyers can beware, but I am hoping for a positive resolution

hi guy,

just purchased a new denon 3311 and my previous is denon 1909 and got some Audessey MultiEQ XT setup question. As i did setup Audessey MultiEQ XT today and found out that it detect my speaker for front and center as big instead of small which is strange as my previous denon 1909 detect correctly my front and center speaker as small, also i did completed all 8th position during setup and my front speaker is a bookshell type, so guy can u advice what when wrong during my Audessey MultiEQ XT setup?

Thanks
my room size is around medium size also my surround speaker it detected correctly as small and Audessey MultiEQ XT did detect my svs subwoofer as well.

Thanks
^^

All it means is Audyssey detected that those speakers can handle frequency's below 50Hz and your avr set them to large.

Set all speakers to small with a crossover at 80Hz and let the sub handle the lower frequency's for better SQ.

Yes. They are called Quick Select buttons.

Just to add. When you make your changes hold down the Quick Select button for a few seconds until memory appears on your tv screen. This will change and memorize your new settings. Just in case you didn't know.

I'm struggling to set up Zone-2 on my Denon AVR-3311CI to support the 2 speakers on my patio (2-channel stereo)
(I'm currently using the Main Zone in a 5.1 channel set up)
In following instructions in the Owners Manual (pages 61-62) I have the hook up to the speakers complete....but I'm getting no sound to the speakers no matter which source I select.
Although the owners manual does not mention of any restrictions on which source can be selected, I was given to understand in an older thread in this forum that only analog sources connected to the receiver can be used in Zone-2.
Appreciate guidance on this

Press 'Zone Select' on remote until the remote is controlling Zone 2. Press 'Zone Device, On'. Then select a source such as USB or Pandora. Those will work for sure without any analog cables needed.

The Denon 33XX and higher model series are also only a handful of models that can pass PCM 2.0 over optical/digital coax to Zones 2/3 in addition to analog. As the post above notes, however, you can also pass USB, internet radio, and Airplay to Zones 2/3 as well. Also ensure that AMP ASSIGN is set to Zone 2.
Thanks for the quick responses....I have done exactly that - have the iPod plugged iinto the 3311 via USB, set the AMP Assign to Zone-2, Source set to Net/USB (for Zone-2), and the Zone-2 power is ON.......and still am not getting any sound out of my Zone-2 speakers !!
What else should I be doing ?

Do you have the Zone 2 speakers plugged into the correct speaker posts (ie. Surr Back/Amp Assign)? If yes, set AMP ASSIGN to Front B to see if you get audio to the speakers with that configuration.

Yes, speakers are working fine.........will call Denon to set up repair of Zone-2amp under warranty
