Surge Protector Recommendation

Does anyone have recommendations on a good surge protector to protect my equipment? My budget for a surge protector is around $80/$90, but don't know how many "joules" it needs to protect everything that I'll be connecting to it. I'll be protecting a Sony EX500 LCD, cable box, PS3 and maybe surround sound in the future.

I live in an apartment, so I can't buy one of those whole house surge protectors.

What brand is the best, and how many joules do I really need? I rather be safe than sorry, and have peace of mind.

Thank you so much!

Any known name brand surge protector will work. Monster, Belkin, Tripp Lite, would all be good places to start. Basically, the joule rating tells you how much of a surge the strip can absorb, the higher you go, the more of a zap it's rated for.

I have one of these and it's worked just fine for me over the last couple years. It's also got Ethernet and coax connections to protect those lines.

Otherwise, one of the medium level Monster or Belkin surge protectors would work fine as well. All the middle tier protectors are going to do, pretty much the same thing, so brand is not really a huge deal. Keep in mind, some surge strips only have outlets, they don't all have Ethernet and coax protection. You can most likely get away with that, but if you're buying a strip, I say get one that protects everything. My personal opinion is that you don't need to go with a super expensive strip, but I wouldn't go with a super cheap one either. Also, think about what you're going to be plugging in and make sure the outlets on the surge strip are spaced far enough apart or positioned in a such a way that will allow you to plug all your things in.

Here's a few that will all do about the same job.

This combination line voltage regulator and surge protector is one we have used successfully for years on all our electronics.

Thank you very much for the replies.

Is the Monster "Clean Power" Stage 1 effective, or more of a gimmick? Will it actually make the picture clearer than using a non "Clean Power" surge protector?

Thank you!

Is the following surge protector considered good for hooking up an LCD, HD cable box and PS3?

http://www.tripplite.com/en/products...txtModelID=144

It's the Tripp Lite TLP810NET. I am not familiar with any types of good surge protectors, and was looking for a surge protector to protect my home theater equiptment, as well as a name brand who stands behind their products and warranties. I was looking solely for a surge protector, as opposed to anything else.

Thank you so much!

Monster does make a good product, but it is FAR over priced. The clean power is a gimmick, I still had ghost lines/static on my old plasma that you could see during black scenes, so much for clean power. Luckily Best Buy was getting rid of some older monster surge protectors and picked them up for $20 each. Just find a name brand with a high rating of protection.
