"Official" Sony STR-DA3600, 4600, 5600ES Receiver thread - Page 8

Okay, since I'm having such great luck w/ this forum (and poor luck w/ Sony tech support), I'm going to throw another problem out there. I utilize both of my HDMI outputs (living room and patio). However, when I try to watch something via my cable box on both TVs at the same time via these HDMI outputs (A+B), the pictures on both TVs just flicker on and off and eventually both screens just go black. I then have to hit HDMI Output and pick either A or B.

I thought this was something inherent in the outputs, but when I play a movie via my PS3 I'm able to use outputs A+B and display the movie on both screens without a problem.

So is it something about my cable box (Time Warner Motorola), the TV signal (seems to occur regardless of HD or SD), my HDMI cable (good quality via Monoprice) or something else? I can't figure it out.

I had given up on this and learned to live with it but thought it'd be worth a shot to see if any of you had any ideas. Thanks in advance for any help.

My thanks to tweakinaddy for the suggestion. Long story short, I know that using HDMI for one TV and Component for another TV simultaneously does indeed work. The problem is only with using both HDMIs at the same time (A+B).

Since posting this, I have done some more research, while I wasn't able to fix this, I was able to determine that the problem is attributed to the cable box and not my STR (sorry for endlessly cursing you, Sony). For some reason, it progressed from the problem mentioned above to never showing a picture via HDMI on either TV, only sound. I then reset the cable box and got back to my original problem (but at least now I have a picture on one TV at a time). So I guess I have to live with this.

At any rate, thanks again. Thought I would pass along the pseudo-resolution.

So did you attemp hooking from your set top box to the AVR via component? I thought the dual HDMI outputs would run it if you ran it that way.

I've tried doing the Memory clearing procedure TONE MODE + HDMI IN + power to clear the memory of the reciever.

"MEMORY CLEARING..." is displayed, but MEMORY CLEARED never displays. I've left the unit for hours (even though the instructions state 30 secs, and nothing changes.

Now, every time I start the receiver it says MEMORY CLEARING...

The unit starts working after a while, but I can't access the Network options in the menu, as a message is displayed: "This function is not available".

The same message is displayed when I select to update firmware in the System Menu.

The NIC lights on the back blink in sync on the NIC the UTP cable is plugged in.

I've tried rebooting the reciever (hold power 10+ secs), tried unplugging the device more than 1 min. Still the same thing.

I've found someone in Japan with the same issue. But nothing else...

I perofermed a SUPER RESET in the SPECIAL menu, and after that the netork worked fine, but after 1st power off, and on, the same thing happens, only this time the display reads "MEMORY CLEARING***" (asterisks instead of dots).

Any ideas before I send it to repair?

tnx
Zoran

I have set the system up using a 3600 connected to a Bravia TV, everything is working fine but being 16ft away it's very difficult to see the volume settings. Does the 3600 support sending volume info to the TV have been through the manual up and down and can't anything that reads like sending info to the screen, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Come on guys some one out there must know how to get the on screen display on to show volume through the hdmi connection, spent hours on the phone and Sony couldn't even help.
Are all of your components connected with hdmi? I have a str-da5600 and when I took it out of the box the on screen volume worked.
Yes everything is connected via hdmi cables

It was just a thought. I looked through every page of my manual as well and found nothing. I also looked through my GUI and found nothing where I can turn it on or off.

Fwiw, the 3600 also shows the volume as an on screen display (whenever you change it) over a component connection.

That must be a default setting since I just set mine up 2 weeks ago and haven't had the time to play with it.

Maybe you could reset to the defaults?

I'm not sure what you mean by HDMI A or B I thought there was only one HDMI out.

Hi Whitl, sometimes enabling HDMI-CEC feature (Bravia Sync) can display a volume bar. So if Bravia Sync is off try turning it on for both units.

Are you using only the receiver remote when adjusting volume? If so try using the tv remote (or vice versa).

Would love to try this HDMI-CEC could you possibly tell me where that exists in the setup of the 3600 can't say that I have seen that feature anywhere, the funny part is that I have an analog set of rca's from the satelite receiver going into the sacd/cd input and the volume bar shows up fine but can't get anything with the HDMI's.

Bravia Sync = Control For HDMI
I would assume than your referring to HDMI control "on", have tried that many times no luck, with pass through on or off, can't be in the TV as the analog works and the only connection to the TV is the HDMI cable.
I control the volume through the hand held free Sony app that runs on the same hardware on which I wrote this message.
I would just control the volume through the iPhone app if you want the display with the db level. I think the volume displays on the TV when the "TV+Amp" selection is made under the HDMI setting in the GUI. For what it's worth, though, it only displays "Vol +" or "Vol -" and not the db level (I have the 4600). So in my opinion, the display doesn't really help since I already know whether I'm pressing the + or - button and I don't need the TV to tell me that.
On my 4600 if the Audio Out under the HDMI settings is set to TV+AMP I don't see the volume on the TV. HDMI only you see it fine.

On the 5600 the db level is shown when using the avr remote and Sony projector remote. I also like using the iPod remote for the avr and my Sony bluray.

Okay lets try something else. When you guys configured the receiver for the the devices in the "settings" part did you use device name such as "sat" or did you use the "HDMI". I configured all devices using the "HDMI" options and where I selected HDMI for video and HDMI for audio, if I go to the say "Sat" options I get the HDMI as an option for Video but there is no option in the Audio option. The reason I'm asking is because the only one that shows the volume on screen is the "SACD/CD" option where I picked analog for Audio. Hope this makes some sense to you guys.

thanks
I believe the inputs you are are using expect analog input. Switch over to HDMI1 and you then rename it to what ever you want. That will give the audio over HDMI option.
Those are the inputs I'm using, I guess I need to start over, can some one tell how to reset the receiver so I can start from square one again, maybe then it might work.
Well I just got a call from Sony and it sounds like I'm not crazy after all. According to Sony's National Labs the 3600 does not support the on screen volume bar when using HDMI, they say it only works with analog only, how's that for progress we've only been in the digital world quite a few years now.

Not a problem with the DA5600ES, a woefully under-publicized and sparsely reviewed superior receiver.
I just picked up an STR-DA 3600ES at Best Buy for a few hundred bucks but it has no manual or remote control.

Does anyone know if there are controls onboard that I can use to manage the menus to at least get the receiver on the network. From there I can use the iphone app.

I have to download the manual now...
So after reading the manual there does not seem to be any way to manually control the GUI from the device itself. Of course my Universal remote is not Universal enough and as a result will not control this device.

It bugs me that I have to buy yet another remote just to perform a basic network setup.

Okay I have been reading this thread a bit, since I am looking at upgrading my reciver.

I am a Die Hard Sony Fan, all my Equipment is ES. I am sung about a 4 year old 3300 ES now, looks like the DSP board may have ashort in it becuase its at the shop. When I moved and put up my new Klipsch THX speakers I was getting a poor signal n the LR.

Anyhow, I have read talk about the 3600, 4600 and about the 5600. These are SOny's 2010 maybe a feed over from 09 not sure. I know they have a lot of good features and you can get them pretty cheap if they have them on the shelf.

But what I cant find out ins anyone reviewing or info on the 2011 line.

The 2011 line is the 3700ES, 4700ES and 5700ES

recently my es-3600 is at protect mode ? even after all speaker wires is unplug from the back panel of the AVR , i still experience this . when i power on , initially , the screen will be on standby followed by the protect mode

could it be due to the power cord or something else , please help
post #240 of 321
I noticed that the new 3700ES literature says: Internet streaming: Netflix®, YouTube, Pandora® and more.
So I thought the 3600ES/4600ES/5600ES did this also, or is this just reworked marketing?
