"Official" Sony STR-DA3600, 4600, 5600ES Receiver thread - Page 10

Does anyone know the range of the volume byte in an RS232 volume message as sent from the Sony receivers/amps. I do believe the coding for the byte is the same on all of them. I know that a value of 166 (A6 in hex) is the number for a volume of -90 db. This seems to indicate that the formula 'x-256' where x is the value of the volume byte might be correct. This implies that a byte value of 0 indicates a value of -256 db which is kind of low and a value of 255 would be -1 DB.

If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it greatly

TIA

Hi all,

I needed to replace my onkyo 705 with a 3d capable pass through receiver to accommodate a new Sony KDL-NX55720 TV arriving friday. I just picked up a 3600ES today at best buy (their last one) for what I thought was a good price (about 65% off list). However, I purchased it thinking was a 2011 model, but it appears to be a 2010 Model - is this correct? Maybe not so good a deal :-(

Anyways, is the firmware of this receiver upgradable, and do I really need to swap out my hdmi cables with high-speed variants? They are a pain to snake.

Finally, any thoughts of what I could get for the 705 on ebay? Or a broken Samsung FP-T5084 50" plasma? Gonna swap out the powerboard's ceramic fuses to see if it powers up again...

I'm on my second Sony. My first is >10y/o and still going strong and now have had a 4400ES for a couple of years. I think yours is a '11 but don't quote me on it. Firmware is upgradable and yes you will need high speed Hdmi cables for 3d. Just tie the end of a new one to an old one when you pull out the old cable from the wall and the new one should slip through the wall to take its place. Hope you enjoy your Sony, they're easy to use and have lots of great features.

I have the 5600. The 3600,4600, and 5600 were released in November of 2010. Your cables should work just fine. Won't know for sure till u try. Also. The 5600 can upgrade firmware. Check the owners manual it came on a cd. If your 3600 has the 4port Ethernet hub I would think you also can.

This is my first post on AVS Forum. I appreciate all the inputs by you guys on this forum. I got SONY STR DA 3600ES yesterday . That was not my first choice. I went to Best Buy to purchase ONKYO TX NR 609. Sales rep there got me into SONY STR DA3600 ES. I couldn't find much of reviews anywhere. I am not sure what I got into. Could some share there experience on this ES products. Are they relavent to this market. How does DA 3600ES stack up to ONKYO TX NR 609.

Thanks for your time
I have lived with my DA3600ES for about a week now. At first I thought the setup controls were very limited (at least via the gui) - until I discovered the setup manager app. I have not had the chance yet to properly calibrate via the mic (which I fine tune via a RS sound level meter) but I am pretty happy with this receiver coming off an onkyo tx-sr705.

My only disappointment is that speaker ohms cannot be set discretely -its all at 4 or all at 8. My center (def tech c/l/r/ 2500 ) would be happier at 4 ohms.

Other than that, its a nice complement to my sony tv and PS3

Yet another problem...

I've had the 4600 for about 10 months now and have been using the Setup Manager on my laptop all along with no problems. But starting in December, I can no longer use it.

When I launch Setup Manager, the small window still pops up and shows my receiver (so there is connectivity). I then select my receiver and click Next (or whatever). Now, 100% of the time, during the "Read From Receiver" window, I get another window that pops up:

Setup Manager
Unknown error has occurred. (0x80040301)

So now I can't use this piece of software. Here are some other points:
  • I am not positive that the Setup Manager worked once I upgraded to the latest SW version for the receiver (1.02 or something like that). Not sure if that's a possible problem.
  • Sony ES support has no idea what the problem is.
  • I can still play songs from Windows Media Player directly to my receiver, so there's definitely a network connection between the two (plus it recognizes the receiver when I initially launch Setup Manager, as described above).
  • When I Google the error above, I see the error in connection with Microsoft Exchange (??). I am not having ANY other problems with my laptop, including e-mail problems.
  • I have uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled the Setup Manager software multiple times. I have even installed the software on my work laptop and get the same exact error.
  • I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit, Home Deluxe Edition on my laptop and using v. 1.0 of Setup Manager, which Sony says is the most recent version.
I can't figure out why this stopped working after 8 months of working just fine. I would GREATLY appreciate any thoughts any of you might have.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to bump my own comment, but I'm still having this problem and thought I would share some additional information in the event anyone can assist:

* I open the Setup Manager. It show's my receiver, I select it, but when it says "Now reading from AV receiver", that's when I get "unknown error 0x80040301".
* I have been able to use the Setup Manager in the past. I'm not sure what's changed that is now giving me the error.
* I have full internet access with my receiver (SHOUTcast, etc.).
* I can communicate TO my receiver/AVR via my laptop. (I can play music directly from my computer to the AVR.)
* I can communicate FROM my AVR to my laptop. (I can search music via the GUI and play music residing on my laptop/Server.)
* Since I can communicate TO and FROM, it doesn't seem to be a router or firewall issue.
* I have loaded the Setup Manager on another laptop (both running Win7), and I get the same problem.

I have looked all over the internet for a solution and have called Sony (no solution, obviously). I don't see that many people having this problem which is starting to make me think it might be the receiver or maybe my router (although my TO/FROM argument above seems to rule that out). So it's a total mystery to me. PLEASE HELP!! Thank you all.
I don't have a solution, however I'm wondering if there is a way to revert back to the old sw version on the receiver. If that's the only change you made, then it's a likely candidate. Maybe Sony support would know how to do that.
I know your frustration with Sony ES Support. I spent 3 hrs. with them only to find out they were clueless. If you have your problem report number, ask immediately to be connected to a level 2 support specialist and maybe that would shave some time.

Hi guys I own 3 Sony es receivers my D4es is the best sounding and biggest sound stage it works great in 2 channel. Then I bought a es 1000 just for extra does not sound that good.
So I just bought a 2400 es to get hdmi and new stuff. It works great just not as good with music. Is there any newer Sony ES model that has good sound. Or is the power different in my D4 es than the newer models thing sounds fantastic.

Hey everyone,

I have STR-DA5600ES and it's been working pretty great for the last year but recently the picture and sound started randomly dropping off. It lasts for a second or 2 and it comes back. I think it's a problem with HDMI-CP in which case I could try switching to HDMI pass-through and see if it still occurs. I'm running all monster HDMI 1000HD cables between the cable box, tv, blu-ray player and the receiver and it happens with either the blu ray or cable box selected so I don't think it's either of those. It could be a problem with the TV so my next step is try swapping the TV out to see if the problem still exists but I was curious if anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks,
Jeff

Have you checked your DVD player and its settings for a possible handshake issue?

I have checked settings on everything but I don't think it's a problem with handshaking with the Blu-ray player as the problem occurs with my cable box as well. It's intermittent so it's difficult to track down but I think it's either a problem with the TV or the receiver.

I use my Sony app all the time to use my receiver. It is absolutely the greatest and makes this receiver so easy to use. The one aspect of it that I have not used, however, is the "Common" selection from the Zone 1 Home screen.

When you select it, it brings up TV, Projector, Light and Macro. I've just assumed these were examples of items you can control using the app if you're using some kind of external controller (like Control4?). I'm interested in exploring this feature further but don't have any idea where to start first as the limited 'Help' option w/in the app doesn't mention anything about this function. I also know close to nothing about external controllers.

Is anyone using this feature or know how to use it. It's more of a curiousity for me at this stage. If it wasn't too expensive, I would like to use it to turn my patio lights and fountain on/off. I'll probably just end up buying a cheap on/off remote at Radio Shack or Lowe's but thought I would explore this option first as it would be nice to control everything via my iPod Touch.

Thanks as always for any insight.

Andy, I found a page on a Sony ES website (with a lot of looking!) that spoke to this momentary dropping off issue within certain serial numbers as I had a 5300ES that was doing the same thing. I called Sony ES support, told them the problem and my serial number, they said they would repair or replace the receiver... my option. I said replace, they sent a 5600ES and I sent the 5300ES back in the same box. You will not get the problem fixed any other way.
jboo43, it a firmware issue with the AVR. He should call Sony ES support, tell them he read there is this problem, give them the serial number, and tell them hewants it fixed or replaced. As I said earlier, with my the issues I had with my 5300ES I got a new 5600ES for my troubles.

fbrooksr.........If you don't mind me asking how long did it take for Sony customer service, or relations to reply to you and offer this?
I'm in the same boat here, and I sent them my proof of purchase of my 5300es like they asked, and I seem to be getting the run around! mad.gif

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and have tried searching for my issue, so I apologize if it has been covered before.

I have an STR-DA5600ES connected to a PS3 and a KDL60NX720 TV. I have a couple of issues. I have everything set to HDMI control and when the whole system boots up, the volume comes on at a high level and is too loud. I've looked at every menu on each systems and don't see a start up volume setting. The TV also reboots about 3-5 minutes after startup. After it comes back it stays on for good. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Darrell

It appears that you have a handshaking problem. You might try swapping out the HDMI cable from the Sony out to the TV in. The receiver should come on at the same volume level as you set when you powered down with the remote.
Thanks AJ, I'll give that a try.

If you have networked the receiver, you can go into the 5600's Set-up Manager on your computer and select "multi-zone" to the left. At the bottom of the page there is a place to enter the "pre-set volume" for the Main system. Yours must be set to a very high level. You can either lower the pre-set volume, or you can check the box marked "off". If you check the "off" box, it will come on at the same volume level where you last had the receiver prior to turning the receiver off. You may also be able to access this from "menu" on the GUI, but I make all changes through Set-up Manager so I am not familiar with the menu options directly through the receiver.

I have a question... I have a new Dell XPS with THX certified sound. For whatever lame outdated reason, the HDMI output from my nVidia GeForce GT530 video card only provides 2 channel stereo. I searched and apparently this is common with a lot of video cards. The sound card has an optical output that I would like to use while using the HDMI video, but the 5600 does not seem to allow the use of a different audio input when using the HDMI input. I thought that I had it working one night, but called it a night and went to bed. I have since been unable to get it to work again or figure it out. Any ideas (besides getting a new video card)? I use the computer for streaming video streaming movies etc... and the video upscaling, while laggy sometimes, looks pretty damn good compared to my old GoogleTV player.

I have had an STR-DA5600ES for over a year and have beeen very happy with it. Until yesterday, a volume bar was displayed on screen when volume was adjusted. It has dissapeared.

I have tried rebooting my receiver with no sucees and cannot find how to toggle it in the maual. How do I get the volume bar to reappear??? Thanks

Does anybody else's 5600 stay really hot even after if has been turned off for a long period? I just noticed it the other day, it only cools back down after I unplug it. What would be causing it to stay so hot? Thanks in advance!

I have the 4600es and I've noticed when I have the CTRL: HDMI setting either enabled or disabled that is what is deciding whether the receiver's volume gets displayed on the tv.

Thanks. I found out reason for the disappearance. I had my theater equipment calibrated. The technician set the HDMI to bypass.

Hi,
Could you tell me where "HDMI to bypass" is located, I only see HDMI control- on/off, pass thru on/off and video direct on/off?

I had same issue with Setup Manager. Perform a system reset to factory settings on the receiver itself. Firmware updates are retained however, user settings will be cleared. Instructions will vary by model. I perfromed this on my unit and Setup Manager functionality was restored! I had saved my previous settings on my computer so I was able to reload them onto the receiver.
It the pass trough option. If you pass it through, the volume will not show up on screen and you will not upscale any lower quality inputs

Rjeff,

I can't tell which post you're replying to? Was it, by chance, my post above on 3/25/12 where I detailed my problem w/ Setup Manager ("Unknown error has occurred. 0x80040301")? I didn't want to reset my receiver to factory settings if you're referring to someone else's problem. There's a guy I was chatting with in Australia in another forum that had my problem. He said multiple resets never fixed his problem, so I'm hoping you had the same problem and it fixed yours.

Please let me know. Thank you.
