Extended Warranties and LCD, Thoughts?

I know that there has been talk here on AVS regarding EWs and their value (or lack of), and wanted to see if the any one's position on these products have changed.

As time moves on and technology gets better I've seen a growing trend that our electronics are just thrown away instead of repaired, is this true with LCDs? I don't know about you, but I don't really want to toss my set after spending over $2000.

Am I the only one out here that feels that insurance is money well spent - I know that I'm biased because I offer warranties, but what do you guys think?

Most of the time, it's a waste of money. I know I have purchased extended warranty before and did for nothing. The only time it did say my ass was, funny enough, on my LCD TV.

I'm am currently shopping for a new TV and as I more and more look at expensive TV, The question comes to pop again, Should I get extended warranty or not. If the device is cheap enough, I don't mind. But it comes down to a certain amount of money, it's hard to decice. If you spend 3k$ on a new TV, and tell yourself, what if it breaks on the second year, can I afford spending another 3K$ on a new TV? This is where EW starts to be interesting.

Absolutely and totally agree!!! When it comes time for me to upgrade, I'm not willing to gamble with $3k, and will get the 5 year for sure!

When you say in the past most of them have been a waste - when did the problem show up, if it was out side of a three year - would it have been covered in a five year?

The crazy thing is that with different warranty companies, the coverage starting is always a bit different. On a three year, it starts after the manufacture warranty (so you get a true three year), but on a 5 year it's different.

Disagree. Can you even buy a warranty for a product that you bought from a store?

Why not, what experiences have you had? I got one on my Sony 55XBR8 for 3years and actually I do hope it breaks down so I can use it at some point.

Yes, you CAN! You don't have to get the store brand warranty coverage and I'm not the only one here who will tell you that the big box store's warranty is just not worth it -- see post from Jeffs386 and there are others here in the past that have said the same thing.

I, and a few others offer extended warranties (I'm not sure if you've see the featured ads on the site) - my main questions here was to see if LCDs are a product that are disposable? I might just be super mega cheep, but I really like to protect my investment!

Rev2Liv -- ROFL! Yeah, deep down I think that most have this feeling! I hope that Jeffs386 replies as I'd love to hear about what happened too!

Buy your TV from Costco and use the AMEX card and you get a 2 year warranty for free. Plus a 90 day exchange period if you purchase a lemon.

Yup that's a simple solution! What happens when it goes bad? Does the AMEX cover in house service? What about coverage beyond 2 years?

Good luck

Cool, thanks for the link.

I rarely ever find it worth it. Only get it if you make a deal on the TV that includes it. Often times, you can get the warranty thrown in for free (even at places like Futureshop).

Otherwise, paying $500 for a warranty on a $2000 TV is hardly worth it when, by the time it breaks, a new equivalent TV wouldn't cost that much more than $500 anyways.

So untrue. I've had nothing but good service from them(BB) over the last 10-15 years.

Ok. Let's say I bought a tv from best buy. Now I want a warranty. But not there's. How do I get a "good one"
See if you can get it through the manufacturer. I have no experience with doing so with televisions, but I did that for my Toshiba laptop. $100 for 2 extra years of warranty on a $2000 laptop. Much better than the $400 BestBuy wanted to charge me. The problem is: it'll be your job to get it to the manufacturer if it breaks down. When you buy a BestBuy warranty, you do so for the convenience.

I'm not allowed to pitch a product here - but you can PM me if you have specific questions. I'm trying to see if LCDs are a product that people feel that require a EW, or are people just willing to risk it.

I'd say, always - but I'm biased as I offer them, but in the past on any large ticket item, it's is worth it! (that is unless you can see that money flushed down the drain).

What do you mean by big box store's warranty not worth it? Explain? If the big box warranty is not worth it then, what makes the others worth it? Is it price point or the things they cover?
I'd say price point. They do tend to be higher then other alternatives. I like the ones where u can get every dime you spent on then set. Back if they can't fix it.

Price point is the main concern, and what's covered at that price point. I've seen people pay a premium at point of purchase because they get spend happy and then discover that they have to lug their 60" set back to the store to get it fixed (not a fun time - IMO).

Make sure that you're getting the value and In-home service is what you're paying for!

Exactamundo!

First, if you have one ,ALWAYS use your AMEx card to buy big ticket items, you get double the mfgrs warranty for FREE. This saved my butt when my JVC D-ILA needed a $1500.00 light engine replaced. AmEx reembursed me every penny.
Mos def avoid in store EW purchases, they cost way more than you can get from reputable 3rd party service providers. I just got a 5 year EW for under $200. Try & match that over at BB.

Yup - that same coverage in a BB would be about two hundred $$ more!

Sorry dude, I don't understand. You'd rather pay more for a EW in store and not have as good coverage?

Ahhhh Ok... Sorry for the misunderstanding! PM me if you have specific questions on coverage as I'm not allowed to promote specific products on the forum.
