double-sided wall/desk cable grommets

Perhaps you've chosen the wrong ones, to try gluing and painting. Or, you've chose the wrong glue for the material.

I'd use something different for drywall, than for a desk. I would look for a different solution for each.

If you want something that looks elegant then perhaps you should be looking for a neat wall plate with connectors.

For the bookcase, or cabinet side, I'd try 2 grommets, one anchored to each side independent of each other.

I received a free catalog quite some time ago and I have bought hard to find items through them ever since. They are my "go to" when ever I can't find what I'm looking for in the local stores.

Check them out. They seem to have anything that has to do with building, woodworking or hardware pieces as well as tools including desk parts.

If they're not staying in place then you're using the wrong adhesives. Or perhaps a screw added to them would help keep them secure.

Most of the grommets aren't designed for frequent use, they're more for just clearing cables off the edges, not constantly having something pulled through them.

As for going through walls, building code generally discourages anything that passes wires through. Probably for fire and tripping hazard reasons, among others. Thus the lack of anything sold for that purpose.
