This, as you can see, includes no subs (wifes doing).

I don't even know what portion of the house cost went for the theatre. Once it was all drawn up and my builder understood it he did make the comment... "I'm not building you a house with a dedicated theatre, I'm building you a theatre with a dedicated living space!"

Basically 2500 sq ft down stairs is a very unremarkable run of the mill three bedroom house. Upstairs the remainder of the approximate 3900 sq ft is the theatre lobby area and theatre.

As for equipment outside the theatre...who knows! It would take awhile to add up but there would be several K$ in the system down stairs with the 60" TV, another several K$ in the 2-ch system in the dinning room, another several K$ in the whole house audio... It's scary to think about!

I consider myself proof you don't need to send a lot of money to have an enjoyable Home theater or music-listening experience. Plus the way I look at it -if I can make such a low-budget set-up look and sound this good and be this much fun imagine how it's going to be when I start seriously upgrading.

This is a little embarrassing but I've actually kept a log in Excel for specifically this purpose. I attached it below for you guys, though it made me .zip it first since it won't take .xls. Over the last several years every time I buy something new for the home theater it goes in the log, and even stuff that I've retired from the theater stays on the list for posterity. Everything from speakers and displays to cables and wallplates, there's even some costs for my DIY materials in there.

In any case, my current home theater setup cost me $8,696.93, with an associated retail price of $13,260.22. The MSRPs have to be fudged here and there, but it helps me believe I've gotten some decent deals Plus the MSRPs do not include the associated tax or shipping that would accompany them, while my costs do, so I'm not kidding myself too much...

In addition to the above there's $2,767.49 worth of "no longer used" equipment, the lion's share of which is my 50" Sony TV that I replaced with the DIY 110" projector screen. So all told over the last 7 years I've thrown $11,461.42 at this hobby.

The next thing on my list to buy is an Onkyo TX-NR3007 to replace my aging Yamaha with no HDMI. The poor guy turns 7 this October and while he's worked like a horse his whole life it's time to give him a break. That will bump my total another $1,200 or so unless the closeout sales I've been waiting for come to fruition after the announcement of the 3008s. I'd kill to snag one under $1k...

I started my mission a few months ago to try and squeeze every ounce of value from every dollar and this is what I came up with. Read prices in amount paid either used or on sale vs. regular price new. All prices in Canadian.

Biggest savings were my mains + center and sub all used but in like new condition. Also saved $600 on TV on boxing week sale. Also don't forget how much we all save by ordering from monoprice
