Not sure what happened to them. They used to put out some decent stuff.
I don't know if their manufacturing is at fault, their engineering is at fault, or a combination of the two. But, Onkyo gear seems to be under tested, under engineered and generally, less than sterling when it comes to function and reliability.
I had 3 of their AVRs (805, 875, 906) a few years ago that were totally unsatisfactory operationally (and I'm a pretty savvy guy when it comes to setting a HT up).
I'll never buy another.
They seem to have only become worse since then.
well...I have had 2 Onkyos replaced under warranty...with new units
funny thing though
Performance for the price...and I mean sound not "tricks"
I don't think they can be beaten
Still on my favorites list for what they offer amp wise in the older 8xx and 9xx units
I just pulled out the 5009 that Onkyo sent me to replace the failed 905
I suggest them to people...but I am transparent about what has happened to me and I suggest the extended warranty
My first one was a refurbed 875 I bought for $589 in early 2009..with the $75 extended warranty for 5 years
I bought it sight unheard and was amazed by the sound...until the HDMI board went out..lol
all kidding aside...nice units for a great price
Just buy the extended protection
