Alien Anthology - Page 29

Alien Blu-ray screengrabs now online at the Home Cinema Choice website. And just to keep people waiting, the other films in the set will follow throughout the week. Which means, this time tomorrow, we'll get to see what Cameron has done to Aliens.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Glad to be of of help fuzz!. I would have done a direct link, but that was my first post, so I've got to get a couple more under my belt apparently before I'm allowed to do that. Can't wait to share the Aliens grabs with you chaps tomorrow to see what you think about those.

Oh, and if anybody cares, all of the grabs are being done from the alternate cuts of the films - in this case, Scott's 2003 Director's Cut.

Would be cool to see comparison to the Alien D-Theater/japanese hdtv also. See what a new master can bring to the table

Slightly over cooked contrast in the sleeping pod scene. Otherwise the grain seems intact. I assume the color is correct. Exiting!

The Home Cinema Choice page is just a placeholder at the moment. I'm not quite ready to get those Aliens screengrabs up just yet...

I am crossing everything and hitting F5 like a loon, also have a copy of the DVD on stand-by so I can do some comparisons
post #852 of 3194
So far so good, anyone want to compare those shots with the DVHS?
Aliens, please do not be rubbish.

Oh what the hell... I can't be bothered waiting any longer, so it's time to get those grabs up. Just give me a little time, because it'll take a while.

Come and get them.

Ah, no DNR disaster!

Me likey.

Oh yeah!

Thanks Blu-rayFanBoy.

Ditto for dvdmike007 for the comparisons.

Those Aliens shots look pretty darn sweet. Far better than what I was fearing.

If DNR was applied with a coat of fake digital grain I can not see it. Unlike some Bond films.

I disagree...the center of the pod where that blu light is, the brightest part of the image shows way more detail...in the DVD it is completely blown out...too bright...the blu-ray is perfect!

When I see these kind of screenshots, I feel pleased and a sense of relief, but it also makes me pissed off for the releases that weren't done right.

Aliens looks AMAZING! Grain is all there! I wonder what Cameron was thinking when he said he degrained it? Good job CAMERON! We are sorry for ever doubting you!
Glad you like 'em guys. I was mighty relieved with the PQ for Alien and Aliens when I sat down and watched all four discs back-to-back yesterday. As for the other two films, well that would be telling. But screengrabs for those will be going up on Wednesday and Thursday (no sneaky previews this time around ).

Alien seems to look spectacular.
Possible de-grain/re-grain or not, Aliens looks great too. Hopefully there's no weird artifacts in motion that can't be seen in stills. Really shows up the "remastered" Predator release for the POS that it is, considering some people were saying there was nothing more to be gained from crappy mid-80s film stock.

Its DNR, but some kind we have not seen before they have made it look like normal 35mm stock.

Either that's just a current artistic sensibility or maybe there's some reasoning about it looking better on HD displays.

Actually in this case it looks correct unlike a lot of recent remasters that change the color timing with bluer tinting, for whatever revisionist reasoning.

He re timed the whole movie with his Avatar DP

Let´s hope this will be a lesson on "how you should do it" for all other companies that have disappointed us in the past (yeah you all know who you are!) and gone the cheap "i don´t care about our movies" way.

In this case judging from these shots thus far it does not appear unnatural or incorrect unlike other cooler color timing changes found in other BR releases.

Star Trek II comes to mind as an example where it messes up color values, or OT SW.

To me it does not look inorganic and contrast also appears not to have been boosted to kingdom come either. I like this re-timing.
