Help Choosing Mid-Range Receiver

My Onkyo TX-SR800 just went bad after about 7 years. I need a new receiver. I can spend around $700. I have an average size room with PSB Image 2b bookshelfs in front and PSB center, surrounds, and sub. I will be using the receiver primarily for movies and television.

I'm looking at the Denon AVR2310 and the Marantz SR5004. I have to confess, however, that I have been out of the receiver market for quite a while, and I really don't know which companies have been putting out quality equipment lately.

Can anyone offer any insight about differences between the Denon and the Marantz, or other receivers in my price range that might work?

The Denon would be an excellent replacement for your old Onkyo. A few others to look at would be the Onkyo NR807 and RC180. The RC model is the same as the 807 with 10wpc less - I don't believe Onkyo actually built a new amp just for this model and both use the same amp. Both are network ready AVRs with preamp outs for external amps - in the Denon line you'd need to move up to the 990/3310 models for those features.

The new Onkyo NR708 is also network ready and has preamp outs. The RC180 is IMO one of the better deals in AVRs for now.

All of the above have Audyssey MultEQ room correction software built in.

The Marantz AVRs seem to have a problem with the "pop of death". Make sure to read the poll on that thread.

Thanks. Other than the pop of death, are you aware of any performance issues with the Marantz?
