Standard DVD's on PS3

Thread Starter
I just purchased my first LCD and PS3 online, and should be receiving it soon.

I have a lot of standard DVD's, but don't watch DVD's very often. However, when I do occasionally watch standard DVD's, I would like as good picture quality as possible.

Will the new, slim PS3's provide very good picture quality with standard DVD's? I'll be using it with a 46" Sony EX500 (1080p).

I know not to expect HD quality, but will the DVD's look as good, if not better, then watching a DVD on a CRT with a regular DVD player?

I'm just trying to get an idea on if the PS3 will be more than suitable in providing great picture quality for standard DVD's.

Thank you so much!

I'm not trying to be an ass dude, but you have a whole thread going about this so why post this seperately? Plus that question was answered already several times by other posters to you.

btw did you email the same questions to Engadget? They had a post up the other day on their HD page that was almost word for word what you are asking here.

I watch DVDs on my PS3 all the time. PS3 upscales DVDs, but they don't look markedly better than a standard DVD player connected with component cables IMO.

The only reason I use it for DVDs is because of HDMI CEC control and bookmarking. Usually I can put a DVD in there, watch half, put a game in, put the DVD back in and it will resume where I stopped.

Everyone knows that DVD's look best on a standard CRT television using a regular DVD player connected with composite cables.

Sorry, couldn't resist being a smart as*.

That's actually what I'm coming from, and that was always fine to me, so I'll take your comment as what I'm used to is bad, and anything will look much better!

Your new setup will definitely look better than what you're used to!

If you haven't done so already you should order an HDMI cable to connect the PS3 to your HD tv. You can find cheap cables online, no need to waste $50 at a store. Something like this http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

obviously you guys did not give him the proper answers and he needs to seek more information.. lol!! with that said..

let me share my experiences. i have done alot of comparisons. comparisions with not only dvd's but i have broken it down between older dvd's and newer dvd's.

equipment
sony standard dvd progressive scan player(not bluray, not upscaling) > component to lcd flat panel tv lg47lg70
ps3 via hdmi to sc05 via hdmi to lg47lg70

with older dvd's such as gone in 60 seconds i was impressed with the standard dvd and the upscaling ability of my tv it was ok but much better with the ps3. yes there is a noticable difference between the two especially during fast moving scenes... bottom line ps3 looks better not quite blu ray quality but better and worth it over a standard dvd player

now with newer dvd's such as the lord of the rings the extended editions with the dts 6.1.. i can not justify getting them in blu ray because the ps3 does such a fantastic job of upscaling them.. even during the fast motion scenes it still looks fantastic..

now i also hooked my standard dvd player to the sc-05 receiver and let it upscale.. not much difference.. dont think it is as good as the ps3..

so do what i do.. when you have a standard dvd put it in your ps3 and watch the glory.. the ps3 is one of the best scalers i have scene.. i dont think it can get much better even with a dedicated scaler.. now remember this is only going to a 47 inch tv which i guess is easier to scale for than a big ass projector or a 65 or 70 inch tv.. i will probably never be able to afford one of them anyway.. so i am pretty happy with my medium run of the mill equipment...

i think it is a thousand times better than watching the same letterbox crap you would get on a crt.. and yes the resolution will be as good and you have a bigger picture...

it will be more than suitable.. you will not regret it...your ps3 is a perfect match for your 46 inch tv...

Sports is my field, not electronics, and I have not heard of Engadget, so the answer to that question is no, sir.

"I'm going to be purchasing my first LCD, and I'm coming from a very old, 27" Zenith CRT. I will be sitting about 6 to 8 feet away. I have asked salespeople, forums and other people, but cannot figure out the size I need. I went into Best Buy several times to look at the LCD's, but they all look "small" in the store, and I know once I get them home, it will look a lot bigger. I will be using the TV to watch a lot of HD sports, TV shows, the news, Playstation 3, some movies and some standard definition. I do not want to feel "overwhelmed" by the size, or have a "movie theater type experience", but I also don't want to regret that I should have gotten a larger TV for a little bit more money. I know it's a lot of personal preference, but in general, from 6 to 8 feet away, would a 40" or 46" LCD be ideal? It would be in an apartment living room, and I am planning on getting a Sony EX500 LCD."

Thank you! I'll take a look at that link for more information. I appreciate it, though.

in that case you really need to look at plasmas.. i saw the same hockey game on a phillips lcd and a phillips plasma from the same source .. the tv's were in different rooms.. and the difference was unbelievable quality in favor of the plasma!! have you watched sports on lcd's?

if you are doing ps3 gaming pc gaming and blu ray watching i would say get lcd but you said that sports is what you like.. i would revist the stores with a sports program.. i think you will see a difference...

i still get the "letterbox crap" with a 16:9 lcd. i don't know why the ps3 can't zoom on a dvd, fitting it to the screen, like it can when i stream movies from my laptop. i can't stand those black bars.

Using the Sony EX500 LCD with a PS3, if I watch regular, standard DVD's, will I get the black bars? For example, if I watch RUDY or Married...with Children (season DVD) on the PS3, would I see any black bars?

Thank you!
When I watch my Simpsons DVDs (4:3) the picture is stretched, no black bars. There's probably a setting somewhere.

actually i dont watch much 4:3 material.. almost all of my sd movies are 16:9 even...

i dont think there is a good way to make 4:3 into 16:9 since it actually lacks the information to put there.. it has to be stretched which sucks..

I don't know what these others are talking about but I have found the Slim very impressive much better than my older Sony Upconverting DVD Player. I was watching Entourage Season Six and was wondering to myself how much better could the Blu-ray version be.

I can't remember what the upconverting options are, but there is one or two that will cause this. I think the proper setting is "Normal", which will retain your 4:3 aspect. If you put it to "Double" or something other than "Normal", it will cause the problem you stated.

If I watch standard DVD's every once in a while, but I'm not a huge movie buff, would the PS3 slim be more than suitable as the only DVD player hooked up to the LCD?

Also, would watching standard DVD's on the PS3/46" LCD (through HDMI) look a lot better than if I was watching standard DVD's on a regular DVD player on a CRT?

Thank you so much!
Yes. My PS3s are the only DVD player in the house (the two PS3s). I AM a movie buff, and they are GREAT DVD players. I watch somewhere around 8 movies a week and the PS3s get 100% of that duty.

Yes, they look better. The upscaling really works.

You'll probably want to get the Sony BD Remote or use something like a Harmony for watching movies. I know some like using a controller, but it was confusing to me.

The most common and annoying complaint on AVS Forum. It depends on the aspect ratio. About half (some say more, some say less) of the movies out there are 1.85:1, which is close enough to the shape of your screen you won't see black bars, although you would if you were watching on an old 4x4 CRT. Others are mostly 2.35:1 or 2.40:1. In that case, you'll still get black bars, because your TV doesn't change shape like a theater screen can.
