How to determine speaker size

I just found out there is a place outside for a speaker. The speaker is old and owrn off so I can not read the back. How do you determine what size speker it is? Do you meausre the speaker itself or do you measure from side to side? It is a round one.

Measure the diameter of the speaker element itself and that will get you in the ballpark.

I assumed the OP had a mounted speaker and needed to replace it, restricting the size to what's there. Or is something else going on?

laurandavid -- What exactly are you trying to understand and do? Is it a single driver you are trying to replace, or an entire speaker system in an enclosure?

Just a single speaker. There is an enclosure that is screwed to the wall and inside there is one spaker. So the old speaker is worn off so can not see anything on the back that may tell me what it is. I measured from side to side, including the mounting area, and I get 8. The speaker itself is between to me looks like 6.5-6 3/4

can you post a pic of the enclosure?
is there a brand name somewhere on the enclosure?

You want the size of the speaker itself. Sounds like it is probably a 6" speaker, but it might be an old 6.5" car speaker somebody put up. Measure the distance across mounting holes, then check some of the online places like Parts Express etc. to see if you can find one with the same dimensions. Or, take it out and to a friend or your local Radio Shack dealer.

You might be ahead just trashing the old speaker (enclosure and all) and picking up a new outdoor speaker to mount in its place. Do you know the wiring to it is good, and where it comes out?
