Your understanding is correct and it's not stupid at all. It's how things work.

To make it useful you want it to patch the game in advance of you trying to play. What would seem like a reasonable design would be for your PS3 to power up at the designated time and check for updates for any games which have game data on the system, then contact the server to have them updated.

This does not require a personal Sony server to connect to my PS3 at any given interval, it requires my PS3 to connect to their server.

The issue (as already described in the thread) is that Sony has not been transparent with how autopatching works and so makes it hard to know what to expect or how to use the system in a way which makes the feature work best for you.

"[PS+] turns on your PS3 system every 48 hours (during the timeframe you designate)"

Yup, it gets even more dumb than I thought.

From the PS blog...Kane and Lynch 2 Demo this Tuesday.

We’ve got exciting news for PlayStation Plus members! On Tuesday, July 20, an exclusive demo of Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be available for automatic delivery to your PlayStation 3 system, just for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The demo is available exclusively to PlayStation Plus members for one week on the PlayStation Store — both by automatic download and from the storefront.

The demo will be available to all PlayStation Store users on Tuesday, July 27.

Not to be a smart @ss, but does that mean I have to go to the store, initiate the DL, then cancel, and then await the every 48 hour download to occur.

"does that mean I have to go to the store, initiate the DL, then cancel, and then await the every 48 hour download to occur.''

You forgot the step where you need to pray to Sony Christ that he will feel like downloading your thing this time around, and not wait until some indeterminate future point.

Joe, that link has a phishing/virus bug in it. It got me and compromised my World of Warcraft account.

Oh, that was from a generic PS3 news blog. Thanks for the warning. I'll replace it with a direct link.

I just added up the $ value of downloads I've gotten from Playstation Plus. While there are quite a few that I would never have downloaded if it weren't free (Minis, dynamic themes, etc), I have already downloaded $39 worth of stuff. And, that's not counting the Qore subscription for the year.

So, I can easily say that I've already gotten my money's worth out of Playstation Plus, and that's not even counting the early download of Kane & Lynch 2 (that was waiting for me when I got home from work today without me doing anything which is nice), or the Hulu Plus.

^^^ You make a great point about K&L2. Obviously the auto update will need some tweaks going forward, but I'm surprised how much I like having a complete new demo already dloaded and installed, ready to go the moment I turn on the machine. It really is a terrific feature.

That was one of the advertised features of Playstation Plus--exclusive early demos pushed to your PS3. Someone might be retarded, but it isn't Sony.

Agreed, feel like I've already gotten quite a bit of value in the first month, happy I took the leap as things should only get better with time.

You decided to turn on auto-update, and part of its function is to dload featured demos. You can turn it off and not deal with it, or even easier simply hit the delete button on the demo file.

Out of curiosity is that clearly explained in on the XMB? Just wondering as my country has comparatively small data caps on broadband, and something like this could easily cost the consumer (at $2 a GB that's $4 just for a demo).

The default has it turned off in the XMB option menu after signing up for PS+. To turn it on, you must select a two-hour time block for it to check for updates once every 48 hours.
If you have a tiny data cap, then you probably shouldn't have anything ever set to automatically download, console or otherwise.

you guys are soo funny. all those years in the circus are finally paying off. my point is that sonys plus feature fails to download patches and update all of my games. BUT it did turn itself on and Dled some useless junk i dont even know about. call me whatever name you want now because you are SOO cool.

p.s: do NOT insult sony or PS+ as bassmonkeee will get offended and starts ranting like an ignorant child.
LOL. You thought THAT was ranting? Man, you should meet my wife....

And, you can insult Sony and Playstation Plus all you want, as long as it's valid. You haven't seen me say anything snarky to anyone complaining about the updates to games have you?

Welcome to the internetz

I was really close to make the plunge for PS+ yesterday. I think I'm warming up to the idea of automatic patch downloads.
I'm extremely happy* with Plus. With the purchase of Echochrome for $5, I'm up to $44 in savings from PS+ before counting the Qore subscription.

And, either all of the games I'm playing aren't getting patched, or the patching system works fine for me, because I haven't had to deal with a patch yet.

* I'm not really happy with the service--I'm simply an apologist fanboi who can't stand to see the name of my poor beloved Sony run through the mud so I pretend that I'm happy for strangers on the internet. Because that makes more sense.

"I was really close to make the plunge for PS+ yesterday. I think I'm warming up to the idea of automatic patch downloads."

If automatic patching worked, then I'd say go for it. As it stands, auto-patching is broken as hell. PS+ is fine for the other offers, and if you are interested in that content, then spend your $50. There is no way that I could recommend spending that $50 on a patching system that is apparently designed by retarded kangaroos.

Hey now. Don't insult kangaroos like that!!
Oh, I'm not insulting kangaroos. Kangaroos are rad as hell. Specifically, their forearm cooling system is an incredible example of ingenious evolution. They aren't the smartest animal though, and a retarded one is even dumber. I'm just saying that Sony's software engineers show evidence of retaining the intelligence of said retarded kangaroo.

If I was going to Australian wildlife, I now realize that I should have gone with the koala. Incredibly stupid, and incredibly slothful. Seriously, we are 3.66 years in to the product's life, and while the software on it has seen massive improvements, it is still barely usable. That would still be a insult to the koala though, as that creature is at least very specifically evolved to it's environment.
