Yup. Different regions all have totally different licensing deals between console manufacturers (like Sony) and publishers (like EA or Take Two). Those deals have to do with a lot of factors: prior sales, projected sales, specific traits of the European market, and, of course, the negotiated cost to both Sony and the publisher.

We've got some stuff they haven't, although I did recall reading something that Europe was going to cycle through more games at a quicker pace than the US.
For whatever reason, it seems like SCE America has had a very hard time with licensing legacy (very old) and catalog (sort of old) titles--judging by how many fewer PSOne/PS2 releases North America has compared to Japan, and how many fewer PSOne titles North America has cycling through for Vita than Europe. Not sure why. It could just be cost. Those licenses may be a lot cheaper for Sony to secure in Europe and Japan than they are in the US. The differences in PS+ bonuses could be for similar reasons. But that's just a guess.

Vita product support for all existing and future PS+ memberships has been confirmed at the TGS show:
Quote:
We announced back at Gamescom that PlayStation Plus would be coming to PlayStation Vita (PS Vita), and today we’re pleased to announce that our premium game membership will make its debut on PS Vita in November, providing an Instant Game Collection to PS Vita owners along with the same features that many of you already enjoy for PlayStataion 3 (PS3).

If you’re already a PlayStation Plus member on PS3, you’re in luck—you will automatically be able to also enjoy all the PlayStation Plus features for your PS Vita at no extra cost.

PlayStation Plus features for PS Vita available in November will include:

  • Instant Game Collection: Unlimited access to a regularly refreshed selection of the full versions of games as long as your membership is active.

  • Discounts: Take advantage of exclusive discounts on games and DLC for your PS Vita.

  • Online Game Storage: An additional 1GB of online storage for game saves for PS Vita games and downloaded content.

  • Automatic Updates: PS Vita will automatically start up at a designated time to download and install select game demos and game updates as well as system software updates and start standby mode upon completion.

  • Automatic Trophy sync: Trophy information will be synched to PSN servers automatically via the PS Vita.

If you don’t yet own a PS Vita, there has never been a better time to invest in the most powerful portable entertainment system. In addition to the Instant Game Collection you will be able to tap into through PlayStation Plus, PS Vita also has an arsenal of great and innovative games, like the recent hit Sound Shapes, not to mention some of the hottest upcoming titles like Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.

I recently read that and got very surprised. One of the bad points of the PS Vita is Sony over charging their memory cards but that instant games collection will now give the cards some extra value for the price. A lot of those games will probably have been bought by many people already but for the new people buying PS Vita's, it'll be a remarkable deal.

I hope this doesn't mean they're going to dilute the offerings for the ps3.

Heh, some would respond that it can't be diluted more since mos U.S. freebies are not retail dloads. smile.gif

However, I think that as gamers without a Vita dload free titles for it, the idea is for some to get a Vita eventually just to play them.

Yeah, I'm sure that's their idea, but it'll never be mine. I dont want another portable. There's so little on that system right now I can't even imagine what they'll give for free anyway. I've been very pro-Sony ever since they started doing the instant game collection - if they start giving away vita stuff in place of PS3 stuff, it's going to sour it. I won't be mad about it if we still get 3-4 PS3 games a month.

Seems like the EU is getting bigger games, but the US ones haven't been short on quality.

Morgan Haro in the PS Blog teased some big news regarding upcoming free game announcements in last night's Store Update. I'm sure some of it was hinting at the Vita announcement, but since the comment he was responding to had nothing to do with the Vita but only free PS3 games, I hope there's something more to come:

There’s some great Plus content coming in the next few weeks (multiple awesome games actually). I know it’s a tease, but by next Monday we’ll have a great announcement for Plus, and more to come thereafter.

Received a message on my PS3 last night. 1 Month Free Trial of PS Plus. My first subscription (year) ended a while ago. Anyhow, can't beat FREE. Downloading some of the PS Plus games now. Probably won't have time to get through them all. I know I won't, but still want to try out Borderlands and Infamous 2 and LBP 2.

You need a credit card to sign up and have to cancel before the month is up or it rolls into a 3-month subscription.

Just when I thought those old-school Sony/BMG 12 free tapes for the price of 1 deals were a thing of the past... wink.gif

^ LOL. I remember once getting a letter threatening legal action if I kept mailing their "monthly feature" back return to sender.

I'll get PS Plus again eventually, but right now I'll happily accept their free month.

Man, they only sent me an offer for a 1-week trial. But since I'm a Plus sub through next June, it just added a week to my expiration date. So anyone else who gets one of these offers, be sure to redeem it even if you are a current Plus sub to extend your membership.

Its worth the money in my mind. Having the auto patching feature to me is so nice as waiting for my game to update themselves everytime I wanted to play online was time consuming. Games they offer are pretty nice lately also tongue.gif

Though I've defended Plus, enjoyed many of the "free" games offered over the past 4 months, and felt like I was getting a good value for my money, all I can say with EU getting Bulletstorm and Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition this month, SCEA better come through with something pretty special next week. Being a glass half-full person, I kept assuming the US would eventually get caught up with what EU was getting, but the discrepancies are just getting too hard to ignore. Borderlands and the Starhawk MP tutorial (er, I mean SP campaign) were nice, but where's our Red Dead Redemption, Darksiders, Dead Space 2, Deus Ex or even something remotely in the ballpark. Scott Pilgrim doesn't even come close.

LBP2 was a pretty big freebie for a lot of people. So was Wipeout HD.

I was referring to what each region has gotten since the initial Instant Game Collection announcement in June. EU got LittleBigPlanet 2 and inFamous 2 as part of the initial June releases as well, along with MotorStorm Apocalypse and Darksiders, which we didn't get (though they didn't get Ratchet & Clank All 4 One).

So as far as full retail titles go since July, EU has gotten Borderlands, Starhawk SP campaign, Just Cause 2 (which US got in June), Red Dead Redemption, Deus Ex, Dead Space 2, RE 5 Gold, and Bulletstorm.

Pending next week's US announcement for October, so far US has only gotten Borderlands, Starhawk SP, and 2/5ths of The Walking Dead, which will get a full retail release in December.

We're getting screwed over. If we were getting what EU is getting, I'd be happy. But as of now, I'm pissed that I extended this for a full year. Complete waste of money.

PS3 sells better in the EU. It makes sense that it would be easier to get publishers on board for higher profile promotions there. Sucks for us here in the US.

I've come very close many times to biting the bullet and getting PS+. But then I realize that I don't really want any of the free games they offer (or I already own them). I'm still catching up with plenty of great games, so it seems like a waste to get a bunch of games that are merely "pretty good," even if it only costs about $5/mo. And the service seems to be tapering off over the past month or so.
It tapered off after that initial wave of free games when they first started the promotion. Ever since, the well has been dry. The only thing PS+ has going for it right now, for me at least, is the GoW4 beta. But that definitely isn't worth 50 bucks.
Gotcha, I understand now.

Rumor is we are going to get some nice stuff in the next two releases, starting next week.

That's the trick of "promotions". You can get pay for many months following good promotion months without many good freebies. In other forms of subscriptions, even magazines that give a lot of freebies, I don't always renew immediate once it expires until I see a good month of freebies again. With PS+, unless you keep your subscription going all the time, you can't play the freebies games that you downloaded before. Personally, I don't buy into having to keep your subscription just to keep the freebies you already downloaded.
I honestly didn't expect much after the initial offering in June. Though I certainly expected 2-3 decent free games every month, I didn't expect full retail AAA titles to be constantly in the mix. In fact, as I stated a few posts above, I've enjoyed what I've gotten so far and felt I was getting my money's worth. But seeing that EU gets 1-2 full retail titles each month just feels like a slap in the face. I understand confidenceman's explanation as to why that may be happening, but ultimately it comes down to money and SCEA obviously doesn't see the need or think it's worth dolling out what they would need to to give US Plus members RE5, Deus Ex, and the like.

In the PS blog Plus updates, we are constantly being promising great things in the near future in response to the steady stream of complaints that rain down, but so far the only cookie we've been thrown is Borderlands.

If PS+ let you keep all the 'freebies' even after your subscription has expired, it would cost more than $50 a year. This is closer to a rental service (or remember Sega Channel?), than a magazine subscription.

And if you notice, the overwhelming majority of "free" PS+ games are titles with considerable DLC. They don't generally give away games just to sell PS+ subs. The big money maker for them and for publishers is in DLC. It's an approach that is setting the stage for free-to-play on consoles.

But, yeah, I can only guess why EU releases are so much stronger. It could be that those particular games didn't sell as well on PS3 in the EU. And because PS3 market penetration is so large there, it's seen as a huge, untapped market for all this DLC that these companies are just sitting on. Just a guess, though.

I asked the same question in the PS blog post where In Motion was announced, and the developer responded that you do need the full game to access the DLC.
