Great news fellow PS+ members.... we get Tim Schafer's "Stacking" for free when it launches on February 8th.
~~~
Since the game will cost at least $10 and I would have gotten it even if it wasn't free, that will bring me to at least $50 in PSN discounts and free games that I've wanted since I signed up for PS+ six months ago. That covers my entire initial payment, and I still have nine months of service left where every discount and freebie will be truly free for me.
Of course that doesn't even count the other perks I've enjoyed like beta access to great games, early access to demo releases, auto-patching and auto-dloads. I've even enjoyed a few episodes of Qore (though I still wouldn't have subscribed to it). No doubt about it, for less than the price of a new retail game, PS+ is a great service with a ton of value.
That's a pretty sweet bonus. I'm glad to see that, despite my initial reservations, PS+ is proving to be a worthwhile investment for folks. It still hasn't reached a critical mass for me, but if they continue to bring this kind of content consistently, than that will change.
I gladly concede that after a slightly bumpy start, Sony appears to have actually delivered on their promise.
So, Im a bit upset about after having XBL gold for a month for free with my new Kinect that I was asked to pay to be able to stream netflix to the 360. PS+ might just steal the $50 I was trying not to send to Microsoft with this.
Yeah, that was one of the things that made me not renew my Gold membership. I have to pay here to get something I get for free on the PS3? No, thanks. I don't play much multiplayer online, and wasn't doing ANY on the 360. The one thing I was actually interested in--1 vs 100--went away. So, Silver and free for me.
Here's today's Plus update, and the next one for Feb 15. All in all a pretty good 2 week stretch:
Free full game in Stacking on the day of its launch, and ealy access to both the KZ3 single player demo and the Yakuza 4 demo. This is a great two weeks for the service.
More cool stuff has just released. First, if you got a PSN message from Sony they will let you dload the PSP/PS3 mini-game Flying Hamster for free (yours to keep even if you quit PS+). Also, we get an early demo of Yakuza 4.
Now that's a new wrinkle. We've had free one-hour trials of some titles for PS+, but free access for a month? Hopefully this continues with other new games.
Last week I used the game trial for the first time. In some ways it's better than a demo because you get the story intro then the tutorial, so it's easier to see if you'll like the game (at least for me).
As you play the trial you start getting reminders when it ends- at 30 min left, then 10 then 5. If you get a trophy it apparently stays on your list forever (I thought they didn't appear unless you purchased the game). Pretty cool system they should expand to all new games that don't have a demo.
Oh yeah, trial also saved me money! I tried Assassin's Creed 2, and boy am I glad I did. I'm not sure where all the awards came from for that game, but it moves real clunky and the combat is stiff. The hook seems to be when you hold down a button the character automatically does all your platforming moves as you run over rooftops and climb the environment. It just didn't work for me, though people seem to love it.
Yeah, it's like renting the actual game for an hour without leaving your home. At minimum you are able to see if the final release has any major technical issues to be wary of. Mass Effect 2 for instrance looked pretty good in the one hour trial I tried.
I agree with you - all games should support this feature even if no digital release is available for the complete title. They can even open it up to non-PS+ players on the PSn for maybe $1.50 and make a little extra money.
The goodies keep coming. On March 22 all of us PS+ members get early access to SOCOM 4's beta (even before the KZ3 pre-order peeps). The beta will let us play all four online modes (including the newly-revealed Bomb Squad) on two maps.
Interesting comments from a Sony rep at the official Playstation blog:
Current PlayStation Plus subscribers are eligible for another 3 month bonus with a paid one-year subscription (15 months), as long as the new 1 year subscription is purchased before this limited offer expires, so act quickly!
Yes, it is possible to stack your subscriptions, and if you purchase another 1-year subscription now, you can take advantage of the limited time offer of a free 3 month bonus!
The 3 month bonus with each 1 year PlayStation Plus subscription is a limited-time offer, so (hint, hint) act quick!
It sounds like the free, bonus three month deal with an annual subscription is expiring soon, but apparently current subscribers can buy another 12+3 month deal if they re-up before the promotion ends (otherwise it'll be the normal twelve months for $50).
