I have d directv/huges hr10-250 DVR.
Recently, I have hooked it up to a sony LCD using hdmi connection.
The Sony tv does show that the input is 1080i.
I set the dvr to 1080i (720 p is no better)
but I am not getting a HD quality picture. The picture quality is just about the same, as compated to 480i mode.
is it possible that this DVR is too old to decode the new mpeg4 hd programming?

That's correct. Unfortunately the HR10-250 was EOL'd not too long before D* started making the big push to change over to MPEG-4 AVC as their preferred video codec for HD content. The HR10-250 can thus only view terrestrial ATSC programming in HD - and any MPEG-2 HD streams that D* is still delivering, which I believe are either completely or almost completely gone now. (I know 1-2 years ago they were pushing existing customers with MPEG2-only HD gear to upgrade to the new stuff.)

The *ONLY* DirecTV reception equipment that can watch, or record, the new MPEG-4 AVC HD streams is the H2x/HR2x units which you can now only lease from D*. This is not accidental or a coincidence.
