If i am watching tv when the room is dark, you can't see them at all. Has anybody else noticed this?

Hmm, is this the 46 or 52? Its possible that is caused by a few different things. If windex or any kind of strong cleaner was used on the glass, that could of damaged the AR coating( I do think these have AR coating on the outside glass) or two its the opti panel filler that sony used between the panel and the glass.

Or 3... and probably pretty likely is the inside glass was wiped down before assembly. Was this a refurb unit ?

Thanks for those who read my review. I hope I didn't come off as negative about the tv, it really is impressive. I would say the vertical uniformity issue is not nearly as bad as the dse I had on my Pioneer pro111 or 110. This issue is with all lcds and because lcds are little bit clearer then plasma( pwm noise, pixel pitch) you notice this more on the lcd's.

Well I hope everyone enjoys their 909! Those prices for the 46 are crazy! I would def pick one of those up if I could but there is no Fry's in CT

Now this brings me to the Sony 52Hx909. I had saw this tv last December at Ultimate Electronics in NH. I was very impressed by it for many reasons, one the moiton handling with motion flow on clear 1 was VERY impressive. Two the DSE was really non-existent on this tv. This was huge for me because I am very sensitive to it.

I will say that I mainly use the tv for gaming and some blu ray movies. So if your going to be using the 909 or the 929 for movies and tv, the uneveness is a NON issue. If you plan to game on it, be prepared to see some uneveness. In all fairness, I have yet to see any tv have perfect or close to perfect uniformity.

Glad to hear you are happy with your TV, and that DSE/uniformity is not an issue with your set, just as it isn't on mine. Your eyes must to be much more sensitive than mine, because I have was unable to see any vertical uniformity issues with my HX909, even with large blocks of solid colors.

Just to clear the air here, the "Samsung fanboy" I was mentioned in my post wasn't you, it was another poster, who at the time seemed to be the main instigator. Right now he is in the HX929 thread parading around a picture of the D8000 with obvious light leakage.

Thanks for the great review.

Just made my order of the 46hx909 on close out today and excited for its arrival. Few questions here: For 3d glasses, what are people tending to use with this set now? There is the 3d bundle on sale with the transmitter and 100 glasses, I believe the 250s are also compatible with the transmitter? Also, I read about the replacement polarizing lenses that became available last fall for the old 100 glasses, do they now come standard with the current available glasses? Are there any other compatible glasses I should look at or any strong recs on which ones I should go after to make the best out of the 909 3D? Thanks.

Thanks for the great review.

Thanks for clearing the air, I appreciate that

Yes, I feel my eyes are way more
Sensitive to uniformities then most people which is why I can not recommend the 909 more! Its
Just an amazing piece of kit!!

Im actually watching a replay of gt5 as I type this and the only time one can see the vertical uneveness is with the replays, its just so minor in normal gameplay or movies that its not an issue.

What is really shocking about this set is the blacks! They really are like the oled I had, if not for the minor blooming you could have fooled me into thinking this was an oled, its just that good!

Also the motion has to be mentioned, with motionflow on clear, its better theany other tv I have seen including crt for clarity with motion.

Anyone having doubts about whether the 909 is worth it... Well I have had well over 30 tvs and monitors just since I joined avs in 03, and this set is just... Incredible, no hype just being honest.

It's a 46' and a new set, did not use any cleaners on it, just wiped it down with a microfiber cloth. Sent Sony a couple of pics, so let's wait and see what happens...

Hi all,

Newcomer here.

I've tried looking around but have had no success. I have a couple of questions if anyone could help me out here.

1) Can someone give me a recommendation for their sound settings? I currently have no external speaker system/sound bar connected.
2) If i were to look to get an external speaker system/sound bar, what are my options? I don't want to go too all out, so maybe a sound bar would be a good idea? I'm not that picky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I strongly recommend the 250 model as they are a few worlds more comfortable than the 100 model. Unfortunately, there are no transmitter bundle packs with these that I know of and you would also be missing out on one of the top 3D blu-ray movies in Alice In Wonderland.

Hi jverson, I am relatively new here as well. I just got my 909 two days ago (lovin' it!).

As far as the built in speakers.... it seems that there is really not a whole lot you can do with them. I am also considering a soundbar and like you, I am not terribly picky.

I have been considering the Visio VSB200. If are near a Costco, that is where I have found the best value for a brand new one. It won't break the bank and it gets decent reviews.... the biggest bitch seems to be the remote. Check it out...

I hope all works out with it, pretty odd that it has it BUT its possible they all have it to varying degrees. Let us know what Sony says about it

Actually, I did notice that you can buy the 3D transmitter separately for around $40 on Amazon, so it can be done without buying the bundle.

Personally, I didn't care for the 3D conversion they used on Alice In Wonderland (it wasn't filmed in 3D) because all the actors looked like standees in a pop-up book. It was distracting. The only impressive 3D blu-ray I've seen so far is Tron:Legacy (although the movie itself isn't very good).

Thank you kilgore!

Anybody else vouch for this?

I think I heard good reviews on the vizio sound bar as well... and its only 99$ on amazon i believe?

I demo'd one in a store... it sounded decent. As long as you aren't looking for miracles, after all, it ain't no Yamaha!

thank you again!

One thing I'm kind of annoyed about is how I would put a Vizio product next to my Sony tv..... but Sony sound bars are double the price!

This is the cheapest I have EVER seen this TV.

This is below the cost Fry's paid for them, so Sony is paying the difference on each TV sold to liquidate.

Im a new member to the 909 club..I thought I got over by getting it for $1199 AT CIRCUIT CITy...you got me beat!!! But I am a happy dude nontheless...

That is what I paid and I thought I got a great deal! I envy people with Fry's near them... But... some site are still selling the 46 inch model for well over $3,000, so $1,199 really is a good deal. $999 is just great.

Easy, take off the name plate.... that is what I am planning on doing.

BTW.... I really love how the 909 is so absent of words and symbols (I really hate a bunch of crap on products.... I even tear off the tags on my Levi jeans!). Love the monolith design!

I am still tweaking my 46HX909. I was watching Starship Troopers (maybe the cheesiest movie ever... "...Oh, Johnny..."); in the really fast action scenes, I think I can see some pixelation.

I have the Motionflow on Clear1 and Cinemotion on Auto1. When I changed the Motionflow to Smooth, it seemed to help, but I didn't like the way the change modified the overall PQ (it looks darker and less vibrant).

Has anyone noticed this? The scenes that I am talking about are really fast action sequences, so this is not an issue in most movies. Is there anything I can change that will minimize the pixelation without negatively affecting the overallPQ?
I have the 46" as well kilgore777. But my experience is the exact opposite. I find the darkest mode is Clear 2 (too dark). Clear 1 is brighter. But both Smooth and Standard are quite a bit brighter than both Clear modes.

But Clear1 does not have any artifacting during fast motion actions sequences. Smooth has lots of artifacts, but more picture detail.

Is there something I'm not doing when just trying to watch Netflix without the PS3?

I love this set, but the built-in Netflix feature is horrible! It delivers only poor-quality sub-SD, and you can't browse through available choices. The PS/3 is vastly better at delivering Netflix (except when the hackers brought down Sony's Playstation Network).

I think the only benefit of Internet connectivity on this set is a better EPG for the built-in tuner. Otherwise, the PS/3 dramatically out-performs it.

It'd be nice to clarify the source you were using for the above mentioned movies, i.e. were you watching these films via Blu-ray, OTA (unlikely), digital cable, or from a streaming movie site. In general, pixelation that you see during fast action scenes is a result of over compression of the source material-- as long as the action is not too fast, the compression is able to keep up with the changes on the screen, but during fast transitions, the compression is not able to keep up and information is lost.

When information is lost, it is truly lost, in that it cannot be recovered by changing settings on the TV.

Unless you were watching the films via Blu-ray, you can expect that the source material has undergone some sort of compression technique to fit the signal into the allotted bandwidth of the channel. OTA is probably second best, followed by satellite, digital cable, and then streaming.

so its been a couple days since I bought the TV, and I absolutely love it.

The only thing I've noticed is when I'm streaming netflix from my computer, i'll notice a weird horizontal strip at the top of the screen every once is a while.

any idea as to what it could be?

Hi Trepanator, thanks for clearing that up. It is a 1080i Direct TV signal. So, you answered my question. I have yet to use a Blu-Ray or download a 1080P movie... I will try and see if I am still having that issue. I am glad to hear that it has nothing to do with the TV.

Thanks for the confirmation, Rebound. I thought that was the case. The picture quality was only coming through as SD using the built-in Netflix feature and looked awful compared to connecting through the PS3.

Sorry for all the posts... but I need a lot of help!

Can anyone suggest a HDTV calibration disc (DVD)? I have been reading up on them, but I would like to know if anyone knows of a very user-friendly one.

Thanks!

I bought DVE HD basics on blue ray. Its way to complicated for me. It didn't help me at all. There's got to be a user friendly one out there somewhere. I loaned it to a friend he said the same thing. You have to be an expert to understand what they are talking about in the video.

Wow, im reading some of these prices and I think im the lowest. $999 at Fry's in late April! I actually got a bit of money and have needed a tv so I went to Frys first. I felt the need to go ahead and get 3D, so I asked him to show me some. I looked at a few but then he asked another employee if he had any suggestions. He mentioned this one marked down for some reason (anyone know why?). The pricetag on the shelf said $3200 and so did a couple of quick online check, but the computer showed $999. SOLD! Also picked up a 2 pair glasses and sensor kit with Alice in Wonderland for $300 (normally $150 a pair, $49 for sensor). AWSOME TV!

Now Im having trouble connecting to the online services. I have before with a short lag every 5 to 10 shows. Now everything seems to be connected, but it has a connection error when I try and go into hulu or anything. Has anyone else had or heard of this? Is there an update or do I just need to call cust service. I just got off the phone with the cable company, 2 hours and 4 transfers to set up and connect a new modem. I hate tech support! Please tell me there's a simple fix.

A firmware upgrade is the first thing you should try. Use the USB method.
usb method?
The firware can be downloaded to a USB stick, and then plugged into the side of the TV.

Follow the instructions on upgrading firmware found on the sony website step by step with no deviations.
Sony gave me an alternative way to update the firmware.

Power on the TV.
Update/refresh the Internet content.
Power off the TV.
Within 2/3 minutes the TV will auto start the firmware update via online. The amber light will blink.
When finished, it will go to red again.

so strange. I tried it with my usb drive and I kept getting a message indicating that a software update cannot be done using this USB device.

I decided to go the wired route but i'm confused as hell how to update it through the internet. I have it set for automatic software update but i'm confused as to when it actually updates it? It says that it does so during stand by, but how does my tv go into stand by mode?
