Plug an USB external Fat32 formated HDD and you should be good to go. Other AVS'ers have reported that when going from a fat to a slim you should make more than 1 back up and consider making a backup from within another user account than your main one. This all has to do with the restore to the slim that can be spotty. Of course mine went as smooth as one could ask for. There are online instructions to upgrading the HDD on the slim as well which dictate you need a copy of the current FW on a USB stick or HDD. The old fats didn't need that.

It's none of my business, but you state you've only used it a couple of times. Why bother upgrading something you don't use anyways?

I'm considering taking advantage of this deal and getting a new slim for my old fat. Is there a utility on the Ps3 I should use for wiping the drive or is there a better method to use?

Traded my 40gb yesterday. No issues at all, He told me that i was the first to do the trade at his store. I backed up all my saves to a flash drive and deleted my profile. The employee just made sure that it turned on and he formated the drive while I was instore. According to the receipt, the current trade in value for the 40 is $110, I was given a $90 bonus. Came out to $109 out the door. The new one's fan is slightly louder than my old model, could barely hear that one, but it is something that i can live with.

DO NOT FORGET TO DEACTIVATE YOUR SYSTEM BEFORE YOU TRADE IT IN!!!!

I hit my maximum and forgot to deactivate the 40gb before taking it in. Sony WILL NOT deactivate systems for you, and although you can see them on the Qriocity.com website and EVEN THOUGH there's a deactivate button, YOU CAN NOT deactivate a system without having the system IN YOUR HANDS.

I was picking up another 360slim tonight and saw this deal in the store. My PS3 20GB Fat has been sitting in a box since the Slim model came out when I picked one up. I just need to take the 160GB drive out I installed and put the 20GB drive back in since the trade in value is the same. then I can use the $200 trade in value toward two more 360 slim units. And with the special 360 trade in deals along with the special PS3 credit, the two 360 slims will cost me almost nothing out of pocket.
I'm glad I saw that deal and now this thread.

These special trade in deals are really too good to pass up. I had never intended on upgrading my four 360s. But with the special deals all four will cost me under $50 out of pocket when all credits are applied.
My PS3 Slim is still fine so I see no need to trade that in for $200 credit.

Explain why you are telling us that??

I thought this thread was about the Gamestop trade in deal and whether it was worth it?

They can and will deactivate the system. Some have success with email. Some have success with phone. They will do it. But you have to push them pretty hard. PM me if you still have problems after a few tries and escalation.

What happens if you don't deactivate? I traded in my PS3 Fat this morning for the $200 credit. All I did was format the drive to make sure all my login info was gone and all my files had been removed. Although I've only owned two PS3 units. The one I traded in that I got in 2006 and I also picked up a Slim PS3 when they were first available.
This is probably an incredibly dumb question but does anyone know if they will take one that has been opened? Assuming it is working fine?

You only have a certain amount of activations (5 I believe) for DLC, PSN games, downloaded PS3 games, etc.

If you don't deactivate your console when upgrading, you lose that activation.

Here is good reference thread to read. It will save me a lot of retyping too. My only question is to you that you did a format of the drive. Did you confirm that you login info was done. I think you have to do a full system reformat to completely wipe the drive.

Exactly! And this is per PSN user ID.

There is a option to reset everything. It does a quick format and also resets everything to the factory default. That got rid of everything, even login info. When I first just tried a quick reformat, the login info stayed there. Actually I tried it a couple of times. It was very annoying that I had to spend a few minutes trying to figure out how to delete the login info. Everything online kept saying to click options and then a delete option would show up, but I never had a delete option show up.
I'm glad I finally found the reset option. Otherwise my last option was to do a full reformat which would have taken a long time.

Gamestop let me bring my 40 phat back home and deactivate it. At some point though I can see this being an issue. The woman on the phone, although nice, was really stubborn about not wanting to send it over for deactivation. It angers me a bit that they rely on customer service this poor.

I purchased my 80gb fatty on Dec 08. And it is TRUE, my PS3 runs very, very quiet(still) and very cool(still). As of 07/06/10, I have NEVER heard the PS3 fan kick in-I'll say it again, NEVER. It sits on top of an open cabinet so I really don't have any heat issues while playing games,BR or Netfix

I still have my 80gb BC and it's louder than the 40gb I just traded in. It sat on the next to top shelf of a component unit that is open on all 4 sides. I keep my house at 72-74 degrees, and I keep the unit cleaned out. The slim is far quieter.

My 60gb, on the other hand, had the fans kick in quite often even after I took it out of the box. While dust and what not is obviously a factor, it also seems like Sony used different parts and what not to build these.

Sounds like build quality just varies. The first slim I bought was quite noisy and had problems with video playback. I returned it and got one that was much quieter and problem-free.

strictly have been using glyde.com for the last month--what a great site. u get good money on your games/dvd's or whatever u want to see and transactions are done pretty quickly. a game that gamestop would have given me 10 dollars on was sold on glyde for 20.

They give you $200 for your old PS3?
Does anyone know if they charge sales tax on the whole $300? Or is it just on the balance after the trade in credits?

Of course the whole. It works like this:

PS3 slim = $299
Tax = $26 (assumption - somewhere around 8.75% for me - yours may vary)
-------------------

Total = $325
Less tradein = $200

-------------------
You pay = $125

On my 360 slim purchases from Gamestop, I did not get charged any taxes on the amount supplied from credit. So instead it costing me $315 with our 5% tax, it only cost me $300 from the gamestop credit.

I don't think it was a mistake either since this was the case for both my 360 slim purchases from Gamestop where I used the trade in credit.

I got charged tax on the full amount w/the 360s Gamestop deal. Pretty sure they made a mistake with you. Or I got screwed.

I am having a hard time understanding the business/accounting/finance aspect of your (state) transaction ;-)

Taxes here are 5%. So for a $300 item like the 360, the tax is $15 bringing the total to $315.
But with my Gamestop credits, I only paid $300 total for the 360 slim.

I'm actually simplifying this a bit. I actually put $50 down from a credit card.(my net cost was zero though after trade ins)
So what it shows is that the taxable total is $50 so 5% of that is $2.50. And then the actual price of the 360 is $299.99. So it shows that the purchase total is $302.49.
This must be normal around here and is not a mistake. Since I noticed on my last two game receipts the same thing. Any amount that I paid with Gamestop credits, I did not have to pay any taxes on it. And these are receipts from three separate locations.(although all within a fifth of a mile of each other)(I have no idea why they are so close to each other)

It depends on whether your state allows for trade ins in calculating the amount of the retail sale subject to tax. Given that gamestop does a lot of trade ins, I am sure their software is up to date. Looking at a research tool, you three are in IN, CA, and VA. The answer is CA pay on gross, IN and VA pay on net.

Here is a table, exclude = taxed on net, include = taxed on gross (ignore the paragraph numbers eg 61-140)
Code:
Alabama Included Exclusion allowed for certain items, e.g. parts, vehicles, trailers, and agricultural machinery. 61-140
Arizona Excluded 61-140
Arkansas Included Exclusion allowed for certain items, e.g. vehicles, trailers, and aircraft. 61-140
California Included 61-140
Colorado Excluded 61-140
Connecticut Excluded 61-140
District of Columbia Included 61-140
