Mediatek or Reon chip?

It's been a while since I've studied up on the upconverting chips in all these different format players, so I thought maybe someone here could answer my question.

Which chip is (hopefully objectively) better for SD upconverting? The Mediatek found in my old OPPO 971 or the Reon-VX chip in my Toshiba HD-XA2? The only reason I'm keeping either of these players around is for SD playback.

I'm trying to thin the heard out and I want to keep which ever one has better SD upconverting.

Thanks all,
Rob

You can see some test reports here:

OPPO 971: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-b...PDV971H%20(DVI)

Toshiba HD-XA2: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-b...HD-XA2%20(HDMI)

Both get very high scores. If there are no observable differences in image quality then I would pick based on other criteria.

The OPPO uses Faroudja for deinterlacing and scaling. I forget if the decoder is Mediatek but that is what OPPO has used in their later players.

I'd expect most people to prefer the de-interlacing and scaling of the XA2 over the Faroudja in the older Oppo. YMMV.

There are other considerations too, like the snail's-pace boot and load times on the Toshiba. The Oppo is a universal player offering much more than DVD playback.
