Any owners Pioneer S-3EX (-W)?

Hi all

There doesn't seem to be very much written about this speaker set in this wonderful forum, so I thought I'd try to see if there are any owners that could give me their thoughts. I realize they may be biassed because of their purchase () but still.

The thing is this: it's on sale with a dealer here in Europe. He's asking 3000 EUR (pointing me to the 'great bargain' I am having since that's 3500 EUR off the MSRP - yes, as if the MSRP means anything at all ).

I listened to it some days ago, and I wasn't really impressed. Sound was flat, bass was 'hollow' and not impressive, and overall they were by no means 'sparkling' as it was written in one of the very few reviews I could find on the web (who knows if these aren't sponsored by some Pioneer marketing dude ). The guy in the store said these hadn't even been 'played in', they'd only run for around 10 hours and sound would certainly improve to the 'supersonic extase level' after some 200-300 hours of playing in. Also, they were connected to some tube amp that made some other brand of speakers (forgotten which ones they were) speakers sound fair ('though also not very exciting).

I was planning to connect them to my SC-LX-82 AV, as I am originally very pre-biassed towards Pioneer (problem with having a Kuro ).

Could it be the sound on that LX-82 and after the 'play in' improves spectaculairly, or should these speakers be ignored in favour of other brands (which I read somewhere in a thread over here, some dealer saying these speakers were more or less 'a failure' / a product line soon to fail).

I'm in your debt for your help,

Thank you in advance,

Bye

Seems a shame to audition those speakers through a tube amp - hard to know what to blame.

Thanks for your reply. The benefit of being a noob is that you can get away with thinking that tube was supposed to be better than transistor (as everybody told me). From your reply I now learn this is not the case (?)
