Deadwood: The Complete Series

Thread Starter
"Although no date has been set yet, the release appears to be a 13-disc set containing all 36 episodes in 1080p with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack. No special features have been revealed. Suggested list price for this set will be $209.98."

Cover art is up at Amazon and I just placed my preorder for $147.

This is a title that I've been waiting a long time for

On a side note, I can't wait to see a shot of Ian McShane in full makeup and costume as Blackbeard in Pirates 4.

Grainy as hell

As disappointing as the third season was and despite the fact that we'll never get an ending for the show, I simply can't wait for this release. Deadwood is still one of my all time favorite shows.
This shouldn't be called "complete" since they didn't finish the show... Disappointing, but still a must-have.
Well it's as complete as you're going to get. There are plenty of shows that lasted only one season that get DVD releases that say 'The Complete Series', so I'm not faulting HBO or anybody else for calling this the complete series, either. Personally, I can't wait for Deadwood. I'm not a western fan, but I LOVE westerns if they're done RIGHT (Tombstone, Unforgiven, Deadwood). All I'm waiting on now is the release date!

Due partly to "day-for-night" shooting and such, this has always had a lot of crushed blacks. It'll be interesting to see how that sorts out on this transfer. That assumes that it is a new transfer.

The price does give one pause.
It is terribly pricey. Even with the occasional 50% off HBO sales, it's still over $100. Surprised it's only 13 discs as well. Rome ran for two seasons and had 14 fewer episodes and is spread over 10 discs. But I guess 3 episodes per disc isn't really pushing it or anything.
Fair to assume it won't have any new bonus material. The DVD set has 19 discs. So assume 3 eps/disc and one extras disc. They didn't bother creating new artwork either.
Yeah, it sure would be great if they came out with a 2 hour film or something to wrap things up before the actors get too old for continuity, but this is still one of the best scripted shows of the past ten years - a must buy for sure. Though, I'll probably hold out until the price is at least 50% off or as long as my patience will let me.

The most disappointing thing about the third season was there was no fourth!

HBO should have at least made a Deadwood movie to give the series its proper closure.

Regardless I can't wait to get this set myself.

Despite its premature cancellation, Deadwood is my all time favorite TV series. I bought the DVDs for each of its three seasons immediately after each was released and continue to watch them even now. As much as I loved Deadwood, though, I am unwilling to spend 200 bucks plus for the BD version of what I already have on DVD.

That's still priced as though you were buying each season separately. I'll guess that the separate seasons will not be released on BD.

I note that all the DW DVD sets have just dropped in price at Amazon.

Why should I be willing to pay about 150 bucks for the same images I have on DVD when I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for them? The answer seems pretty obvious, to me at least.
I'll get this one we see a price drop - I own season 1 & 2 on DVD (never got around to getting season 3 since I was pretty disappointed with how it 'wrapped up'). Hopefully this can be had for closer to $100 by Christmas, then I'll get it for sure.

The hbo series "sorry they were too expensive to produce so we had to cancel them but now please pay $200 for the blurays" is getting old.

Agreed. The pricing is a bit of a slap in the face.

Release date is 11/23 and the article above verifies no new bonus material. I think a $146 pre-order price is fair for something I've been waiting for years to get. I seriously didn't think this would ever come out.

Complain all you want about how HBO treated this series and I'll agree with you, but it was still the best TV series ever and I'm thrilled to get it on BD.

I'll wait a month for the hopefully annual 50% off all HBO products sale that Best Buy like to run around Christmas Eve.

$105 for the set sounds a lot more reasonable.
I'll buy it at that price if they finish the series (probably never). Not sure if I'll ever forgive them for canning arguably my favourite TV series.

And then having the temerity to talk about movies that will never happen.

All time fav show so this is a must have for me.

Its playing on 101 DirTV in HD and I have the DVDs, so Ill wait until that ridiculous price comes down.

Review is up at blu-ray.com.

This confirms that there is no new content. Even the packaging is recycled.

and a lot of money a show without a true ending. It was like it just stopped and left us wanting. AS much as it was my fav show possibly of any I have viewed in my life, I am not sure I would get this even at half the price.

^^ Well, if being canceled is an exclusion for buying a series on video, then you'll miss most of the really great TV. In this case there are no cliffhangers so it does end, you just don't like the ending.

The only thing that irks me is the total lack of any new content or even packaging. I'll buy it eventually, but not at retail or anything close to retail.

Don't really care about the lack of new extras or the ending, it is what it is, but I am annoyed no UK release has been announced yet. A lot of HBO's stuff is released almost simultaneously, but then other shows take ages. I really hope this doesn't turn out like Generation Kill which was a one year wait, or worse, John Adams, which still hasn't been released outside the US.

HBO (Warner) only has distribution rights for the Deadwood in the USA. Paramount has the rights for the rest of the world. So if and when you do see a release outside the USA it probably won't have any extras and could also use different transfers, compression, audio, etc. Deadwood is fairly unique in this regard, (compared to other HBO offerings), and this may have played a role in it getting canceled prematurely.

Thanks, I had no idea there was a deal like that, I assumed Warner distributed everything from HBO. Don't think it's too likely that Paramount will announce it, they're slow enough with the TV seasons as it is (nearly two years after the first US release Dexter makes its UK Blu-ray debut with Season 4, and nothing more announced. )

Paramount may be waiting to see sales figures on the USA release. Ironically, Deadwood has universally done better outside the USA than inside the USA.

But if you want a BD release with all the extras including commentary tracks, get the USA release. The actor commentaries are a treasure of information and entertainment.

I have it recorded on my HD DVR from my fiber cable co, and while it isn't 1080p/lossless, it is very close. Not too far different than the comparison of Spartacus on BD and my HD DVR recording of it.

The ending was written in haste, but it wasn't a true ending as much as it was a necessary evil to give closure, meaning IMO it wasn't finished and left the majority of us wanting and disgusted at having spent 3 years watching our favorite tv show of all time. Best tv ever, one of the worst endings ever.

I would like to get this on BD, but I may just rent it from Netflix if they get it in, they have Spartacus so I am hopeful.
