I guess I should turn the detail level down if I want to play at the higher settings. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Turn off TXAA. It anti-aliases between frames, meaning a lot more bandwidth is eaten by it. On a vanilla 650 at 1080p, 2xMSAA, FXAA of any quality level, or a combination of both is what your AA target should be. Anything more and you'll start hitting the bandwidth limits of your card's ram real quick. I would also recommend tweaking settings down a bit in general to try and hit a more stable 45-60fps. Ideally you'll maintain 60fps with only occasional dips to the 45fps range. Shadow quality settings tend to be the quickest way to gain frames. Set Shadow options to Medium as a starting point, with most other options set to High. In most modern titles, moving Shadows from Low to Medium is a huge improvement, Med to High not so much.

I just got Crysis 2 from the Origin Store for $5, and found out there's a bug in all the Crysis games that output @ 24fps when playing on a TV and DirectX11 is selected. This has been going on since Summer of 2011, so I'm guessing there's never going to be a solution for this. mad.gif

I Googled to find work-arounds for this issue (turn off DX11, force a custom resolution, an Alt-Enter trick, etc.), but it's disappointing to return to PC gaming to find there's still a fair amount of fighting with hardware, software, and developers to get games running the way they should on first try.

In a way, yeah, it's kinda fun to fix these issues, and the games look and run SO much better on the PC. But at times I want to simply launch a new game and dive in, only to find myself having to troubleshoot why things aren't working right or tweaking to get 1080p @ 60fps instead of playing... I remember why I gave up on the PC years ago.
Yeah that's why I'm typically more of a console player. Though thanks to broadband Internet, too many developers are rushing games to the market with a "fix it later" approach, which has soured my enjoyment on consoles as well!

I would play at your native resolution and turn settings down to compensate. How's the screen tearing?
Seconded, try native res.

Nice article on the upcoming PC version of BioShock Infinite.

tl;dr - The devs aren't approaching this as a console port. "From very early on the PC was given equal standing with the other platforms, with its own "strike team" of programmers, game designers, UI specialists, and artists who were on-call to address PC-specific needs."
^^^^

If I haven't heard that a thousand times.

And my usual response to that, "yeah, we'll see about that."

Irrational did a really good job on Bioshock in regards to PC. They developed the PC version in-house, while at the same time 2k Marin built the 360 port off of Irrational's assets. Given Irrational's history, I'd say its pretty much a given that the PC version will be something of a technical achievement, though a bit buggy. If there's any question of quality, its in the console ports as this will be the first time Irrational is doing console versions of their games in-house.

I just bought it for $5 as well, I missed this on the consoles, I am shocked as to how good the graphics are in this game. So far I would say this looks a lot better then assasins creed 3.
I haven't played Crysis 2 on my TV, I was talking about assasins creed 3. my Panasonic Plasma is set to play content at 24 for content that supports it, I don't know if the GPU automatically did that. I could switch it to 1920x1080 60 in game settings though.

O.K. Thanks for all your input. I can't believe how much better a game can look on my PC, I rented ac3 when I had my PC hooked up to my 65 in. Panny Plasma. The PC version was a lot better looking then the PS3 version. And I was thinking if it looks this good on a cheap GPU with a 4 yr old cpu what could it look like on a high end machine? I know the purist turn their noses up at a controller, but the 360 gamepad with the windows plug in thing works great.

Yes. When you hook up to your TV use its native resolution also.

I use the 360 controller also and find it to be much better when sitting on the couch.

I have found that when I leave adaptive sync enabled I get all around better frame rates and A better gaming experience then with it disabled.

I've been playing though Farcry 3 on the PC and am saving my pennys for Bioshock Infinite. I think I'm officially 'done' with the xbox 360 till the new model is released and will be Steaming new games.
Took me 5 years but I'm actually at the point where I prefer playing my games with the 360 gamepad over mouse and keyboard. It's all about the rocker recliner. If I can't play my games with my feet up I don't want to play.
I Amazoned an xbox 360 wireless dongle thingy. Works Great. BUT...
Before I completly abandon my xbox in favor of moving my pc into the living room are there any known problems with games and using 360 gamepads?

I play my HTPC using keyboard and mouse AND have my feet up. Yeah.

You just have to watch what games support controllers, and in what way. From my experiences, even Steam won't mention that the 360 controller is supported by a game when it is. For example, the 2008 Prince of Persia supports only the 360 controller, so it doesn't get a Full or Partial Controller Support button on Steam. There's been many others, so I usually Google "PC [game title] gamepad support" if there's a question.

I'm doing a wired 360 controller as my only PC gaming controller, and have had no problems and love it. But I have read an issue or two with a game not supporting the wireless 360 controller for some odd reason - I forget which one it was.

All games don't support the 360 controller. Even some that are on the 360 don't support it on the PC. There are tools to at least partially get around this. Try the browser in Steam Big Picture I was quite impressed. XBMC is supposed to have 360 controller support with the latest RC's let me know if you try it out. I will get my wireless 360 adapter tomorrow so I'll post how it works on win8.
So far all the steam game demo's I've downloaded work with my wireless 360 controller. Giana sisters and Sine Moria are interesting. The wireless dongle for the 360 works as advertised.
The only game that I have that doesn't work with the controller is Diablo 3 (not on steam). I'm going to have to get xpadder or something to make that work.
Farcry 3 has been a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to playing on a big screen with surround sound. I'm hoping Bioshock Infinite is gaming nirvana like the first was.
Steam developer packages are amazing price. 80 bucks to get a dozen games that I paid full price for on my 360? I feel like a chump now.

That's me. I sit about 10' from my TV.
Keyboard (wireless) on my left leg and arm of sofa. Trackball (wireless) on the sofa. Pillow behind my head and legs up on the recliner portion of the sofa.
Oh ya, beer on the left end table...

My method for comfy couch HTPC goodness:

- Logitech's illuminated wireless keyboard on the lap
- Logitech's G500 gaming mouse gliding across the leather couch's cushion to my right (USB extension cord wraps around in the back to the computer)
- Bluetooth Adapter + MotionJoy program + DualShock 3 for pad control
- Ottoman footstool for the feet

Great excuse to reinstall Left 4 Dead 2 guys! Steam Workshop support just got added to the game, meaning mods are a lot simpler to install and a lot more standardized in terms of versioning. I've got my copy redownloading right now. smile.gif Given how vast of an improvement Workshop support is on Skyrim versus how mods were handled in Oblivion, this looks promising to the revitalization of the L4D2 community.

Yup. Got me a Logitech illuminated wireless keyboard, Logitech wireless trackball and a wireless 360 controller. Only thing wired is my headset. Can't find a wireless one I like that is mic only.

That's one of my biggest issue with PC games. More games need to work like the 360, where you can have one output for communication, and another for actual game sounds.
