Need advice on star ceiling

Something is wrong with my star ceiling. The light coming from the fibers are far dimmer from an angle than underneath the panels. Smaller stars can't even been seen from the other side of the room.

I ran individual fibers to each light point, affixed them into place with low-temp hot glue and then snipped them flush with the panel. I used diagonal wire cutters to do the cutting. In the process of gluing them into place a couple of the smaller fibers did get melty so that's not the way to go for Try #2. I'll probably just use caulk for the second attempt.

However, that does nothing for the problem that the fibers seem to only emit light straight out. Any pointers? The only guides I've seen say to either cut the fibers or to leave 1/4" inch at the end. Some guides say to use scissors, but that would leave the end flat, which would probably make this worse.

Perhaps I should rough up the ends with some sandpaper? Any pointers?

What size fibers are you using? What is your light source?

Be sure that the fibers are not pushed to far into the light source. I found out that if I push the fibers further in that it causes them to dim some, this is problaby because instead of being directly in front of the light source (led's) it is beside the light so less light enters the fiber. I did this to purposely make some stars dim and give a sense of distance.

I'm using a couple of 48 fiber multipacks and a number of smalls as well, so 0.75, 1 and 1.5mm. The light source is a pair of the $50 LED illuminators. Fibers are mashed together and randomly split between the two illuminators.

Ahh, total light output isn't the issue. It's light dropoff when away from directly underneath the thing.

I used a 48-strand bundle of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.5 mm fibers, with a CoolSky LED light generator.

I originally had a problem with the "low" setting on my normal glue gun. It was still too hot, and melted some fibers.

In search of an even lower temperature glue gun, I found a battery-operated "Ultra Low Temperature Cool Glue" glue gun at Michaels. It's made by Ad Tech. Never had a problem with the fibers melting with that model.

I snipped off the fibers with toe nail clippers, parallel to the ceiling tiles.

I have no problems with the stars.
