Best ~$1000 Speakers to go with Denon AVR-1911

How many speakers are you looking for and does that price include a subwoofer?

You left a lot of stuff out.

1. How big is the room?
2. How many speakers? Sub included?
3. What type of speakers (i.e. floor standing, bookshelf, satellite)
4. Listening prefences? (movies, music, gaming, tv?)

It'll be a lot easier to help you with a little more info.

Absolute Sound called these the best $1k speakers, but they cost far less.

True. I love my Classic 3's, and they're priced right.

How do those compare to something like the Ascend Sierra-1? The pricing is very close.

You could put together a HTD package with 2 pair Level TWO bookshelf speakers, center channel and sub under $1000. They come in 3 colors, black, dark cherry and light cherry.

Don't know your wife so not sure if she wants a sub that big or speakers that size or style.

Plenty of stores in the Bay area. Also check Magnolia A/V, they still have a couple showrooms in the Bay Area. One in San Ramon and one in Santa Clara.

Check Video Only too.

There's a bunch of independent A/V dealers too. Just google Bay Area audio video stores.

If you're looking at Bose size satellite speakers look at Energy speakers, Klipsch, Definitive Technology, Mirage, Gallo, Polk and others. Magnolia A/V or Best Buy Magnolia Home Theatre carry many of these brands.

Something like this may please your wife but I'd opt for something a little bigger in that size room.

You have too much space for most satelite based systems like the Mirage

I would suggest at least a bookshelved based system with a decent sub woofer

If you are willing to spend $1200 I'd suggest 2 pair of Energy RC-10 bookshelf
and Energy RC-Mini center channel and spend the rest on a subwoofer from SVS, HSU, Bic

I would also recommend the Energy RC-10 since that's what I own. But he said his wife wants small Bose type speakers. I agree he needs something bigger than sat speakers.

Look around for this M&K system. I've heard them a large, open area and were very nice. Although larger, somewhat "Bose like" in appearance.

Here's another option, take your wife shopping with you. There are several tower speakers which would be very appealing to her. Get two towers and center or sub.

Something like these Mirage OMD15 towers which are reduced from $1200 to 400 each.

Next option is Energy CF-30 towers, CC-5 center and CB-5 bookshelf speakers. Electronics expo has the discount code EMPLOYEE and you can get almost $1k of speakers for just over $500. You can actually see/listen to these at Best Buy.

I just dont think satellite speakers are going to work in that size room which is why I'm pointing out other options.

There is no one most preferred brand. Lots of good brands in your price range including Energy, Paradigm, Def Tech, Mirage, Polk, JBL, Infinity, Klipsch, Jamo, PSB, Ascend, Axiom, SVS, HSU and many others.

You need to go out and listen to as many brands as possible to see what you like.

hard to say what an ideal wattage would be for a sub.

But a good small sub would be something like the Emotiva Ultra 10. Its a 10" subwoofer with a 200 watt amp. Best thing is the small dimensions which shoud please the wife.

Mirage makes some nice stylish subs with high gloss finishes that the little lady make like.

The Emotiva will probably give you a little more output for the money though.

I've never auditioned the Ascend Sierras. Sorry.

Size-wise the RC-10 and CB-20 are pretty close. Sound wise, the RC-10 blows the CB-20 away. Warmer and more balanced sounding that the bright CB-20. Build quality isn't close either. The CB-20 looks cheap comparatively speaking.

You dont need RC-10s for rear speakers but for the price of RC Minis, you might as well get another pair of RC-10s. Cheapest I've seen the black RC mini is $127ea. You can get the RC-10 for $299 pair or less. Not much of a price difference, maybe $40/pr.

Yeah, afrogt is a little TOO helpful. I'm in a similar situation to you, but with a smaller room. Twice now I thought I decided what speakers and setup to buy, then he posts another great deal/sale that's going on somewhere, and I get excited by the fresh new bargains... followed by confusion about what to buy... then more excitement... then more confusion.

Seriously, I need to decide on something soon. And this thread has added a couple more items to consider.


Those $1200/each Mirage OMD15 towers discounted to $399/each seems like a steal.

Still, that's $800 for just the 2 front speakers. The matching center is $300, surrounds almost $200 each, and not to mention a subwoofer. The OMD-15's appear to be an excellent bargain for $800 pair, but you could still spend $1700+ total piecing together a matching Mirage 5.1 setup.

But if $1,000-$1200 price is our bottom line, I wonder if 2 higher quality front speakers (like the OMD-15's) plus a sub (2.1), would give us more 'overall' satisfaction than a 5.1 surround sound setup of the same price, since the 5 speakers in such a system would be less powerful and lower quality??

I don't understand the reasoning for using the RC-Mini (or any mini) for a Center when this is where most of your dialogue is going to come from - IMO the Center Channel and Sub are the most important in the setup in achieving what I call depth and HT feel and an excellent matching Center that's of the highest quality is imperative for all 5.1 listening.

What does Energy recommend for your CC? I just saw a review where Energy Support recommended the Energy CC-10 Center Channel Speaker.
