No luck there. However, I did just discover something that I think may be a problem.

In my understanding, 1/8" mono cables are the exact same thing as a 1/8" stereo cables, minus one channel. So I took one of the cables I had been using for the trigger cable and used it to connect my ipod to a small pair of speakers. Almost no sound came out. Stereo cable, clear and loud. I then took both the stereo cable and the mono cable and had them connected to the end of a AA battery.

AA by itself = 1.5V.

AA with stereo cable (Left) = ~1.5V.
AA with stereo cable (Right) = ~1.5V.
AA with stereo cable (Ground) = ~1.5V.

AA with mono cable (positive) = .6V
AA with mono cable (ground) = ~1.5V

Is that my problem? Bad cables? Hard to imagine that all three mono cables I have are bad, but they are all Radio Shack.

It helps to read... when I bought the cables I simply looked at the ends of the cables and bought them. If I had read the packaging I would have noticed some key words... "6.5-ft Attenuating Dubbing Cable". Big thanks to everyone's help... now I am off to buy a cable that should work!

I'd be wary of Rat Shack mono cables. I was using one of those to trigger my Emo XPA-1's and even though I had the correct type, it worked fine for about 8 onths and then poof, one day it just stopped working. It hadn't been unplugged or moved since it was bought and plugged in (NO ONE touches my equipment except me, not even to clean/dust it). Just gave up the ghost one day.

Well, you can add me to the pile of folks suffering from a dead HDMI board. Guess I'll be contacting Onkyo tomorrow and getting this resolved. Sadly, I do not have the box and am also 1 week out of warranty (Purchased Jan 15, 2011). I'm sure Onkyo will cover the repair out of warranty, but I'm going to get hosed on shipping costs no doubt. Nearest service center is 3-4 hour drive.

I've been pretty happy with my 3008 up until this point. I will definitely be looking elsewhere for my next receiver too. It's too much of a risk for me. We thought they'd remedied the HDMI board issues when we were purchasing our receivers in 2010/2011, but the problem still persists. Onkyo might cover my receiver out of warranty this time, but what about next time? And their track record on this issue indicates a high probability that there will be a next time.

I'd also just second the observation of tsaville and others, the people reporting these issues are not just folks with 1 post who registered just to complain about/get help with this issue.

Gee, is there anybody who has had this receiver for 2 years or more who HASN'T experienced this problem???

Nope and most of us are longtime members here so I can only imagine how many who don't post on forums are out there.

There is a secret bulletin onkyo sent out to service repair centers about this exact problem which explains exactly how to fix it with pictures so they are very aware of it.

Print it out and insist they fix your AVR with no cost to you.

Here..read post #6 and click on link to read the Confidential Service Bulletin..

If they try to give you a hard time and deny it just rattle off the Confidential Service Bulletin # which
is NO:12802702

Goodluck.

It's funny, but based on the service bulletin info from that thread, it appears that the service center screwing up 'might' have been a good thing.

I first sent mine in in Sept 2012. The bulletin says boards from Sept 2012 'should' have this fix, but who knows? But the service center installed a 3008 board (doesn't have a rear USB port) and I had to send it back. Got it back the 2nd time late October - early November, so I SHOULD have the board with the fix. When I get home, I'm going to look to see if I can spot those changes.

I'm almost paranoid to say that my 3008 hasn't yet experienced this problem. There I go. I've jinxed it now!

How long do you have the 3008 ?
I bought it, if my memory is correct, around December 2010/January 2011.
I too am scared to say anything and jinx myself but, knock on wood and anything else that may help, my 5008 is still going strong. Purchased late November 2010...

My 5008 is in for the service on the HDMI issue right now. Without knowing how long it'll be away, I went ahead & purchased a Yamaha RX-A3020. Really like it so far, the 5008 is probably going on the selling block when it returns.

I took a similar route when my 3008 died a few months ago. I replaced it with the Yamaha A3010, and so far I like every aspect of it better than the 3008 (no more DLNA streaming issues, network control is better, 2 channel music sounds better, no more excessive relay clicking, etc).

Now let's just hope it lasts longer than 2 years... smile.gif

Is anyone having problems using the music search function after a repair?

I ask because my TX-NR3008 was repaired a few weeks before Christmas and I only got around to hooking up to my network this week.

The MAC address changed because of the repair so I had to allow it on my two PC media servers. (one Windows 7 and the other XP Media Center Edition)

I can do everything I used to be able to except use the search feature. When I try on either server I get something like "search function not supported on this server or not enabled"

Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem when setting a static IP. Try changing it to a dynamic IP and then trying your firmware update.

My 3008 has no sound out of the blue today. Hdmi pass through when in standby works on the tv. I have tried soft and hard reset. I have disconnected all speakers but one. When I try to reconfigure from the hard reset, I try odyssey and it won't even get past the set the sub level to 75db. (No sound from sub)

Has my internal amp died? Or is this the hdmi board problem everyone is having? If not any suggestions to try? Other problems... Internet port hardly ever works, tried USB input for the first time and it doesn't recognize that one is plugged in.

Hey guys, I bought a 3008 recently and am having issues with Audyssey. I ran the Audyssey setup and set the EQ to Audyssey; however, after measuring the REW the Audyssey and no EQ curves both give the same response. Do I have to do something else to get Audyssey to apply room correction?

Care to bring this over to the Official Audyssey Thread? We need more information, then we can get to the bottom of it. A correctly run Audyssey cannot, just cannot, give the same graph in REW as a system with Audyssey switched off.

Thanks, I'll post in that thread.

+1 NR5008 with no problems.
Its been 2 years this past December. (Knock On Wood)
I have 2 - 12cm fans that sit right on top pulling air out from over the HDMI boards.
It is on for over 4 hours a day, everyday.

I have watched this board/thread for longer than I have owned the NR5008.

I love the NR5008

Interesting that you mention cooling fans. Has this HDMI board problem been traced to heat issues as the cause? Just curious.

Not necessarily... there have been guys that have had cooling fans installed from day one that still had some sort of problem..... The HDMI boards suffer from a couple different issues it seems. But, there are a couple of processing chips mounted on this board that create a lot of heat! And excessive heat on any circuit boards long term can be very detrimental as repeated excessive heating following by cooling can cause problems with solder connections and such, so it is just good insurance so to speak to pull that excess heat from the board area.

I myself have had my 3008 for about 16 months with no problems at all. Since the first month, I have had 2 thermostat controlled fans that kick on automatically when they detect temps going over 80 degrees mounted over the back of my receiver and then shut off independent of whether I have shut off the receiver or not. Although it should be noted that I did purchase it as a Reconditioned unit from Accessories4less.com, so possibly mine had already been serviced/updated? I contacted Accessories4less and they don't have documentation from Onkyo showing the unit's service history...

Thus far, I love the performance of this receiver!

I've had my 5008 for about a year and a half with no issues (touch wood), but I don't use it except for maybe five hours per week. I'll tell you this...as soon as it craps out, I'll get it repaired, but I'll be replacing it with a Denon AVR-4520CI. I have a Denon AVR-3808CI and an AVR-4311CI and I much prefer them (for mainly ergonomic reasons) to the Onkyo.

I replaced all the cables and tried again. This time it worked. Once. Then it didn't. Then it did. Then it didn't. I metered the 12V output from the receiver and it is constantly changing, dramatically. Cables all test fine. Looks like the trigger output is indeed bad.

Gotta setup question for the masses...

I picked up a Panasonic Skype HD camera that I've connected to my Panasonic 65VT50. On my 3008 runs an HDMI cable from the HDMI (ARC)-OUT to my Panny's HDMI 2 (ARC)-IN. It was suggested that I connect it to the Panny's HDMI ARC and not HDMI-1, which lacks ARC. I use a Harmony remote to control everything and was wondering how I can now use my Skype camera and get both video AND audio, the latter to run through my A/V and not TV. I can get video simply by using the Panny's remote and Viera settings and turning on the camera. However, the audio is not of me and my conversation; rather, it's of whatever channel my DirecTV receivers were last one (I've got a couple of those connected to my Onkyo).

If I can use the Skype camera as an activity on my Harmony, great; otherwise, I'm content with simply grabbing the Panny's remote and going that route. Regardless, I'm just hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to how to exactly use this Skype camera and have its audio run through my A/V and not the TV.
