Thanks for the heads-up. I hope this means there will be a US-model f/w update soon. From the link it appears that the update includes "stabilization" of the network connection and "now intializing" issues that are plaguing some of us. I have a 708 and look forward to seeing the update in the US soon!

Has there been any good comparisons with this and the denon 3311ci? They seem pretty similar from looking at the specs of both. Any huge advantage the 3311ci has over the onkyo that I'm not seeing, it's about a hundred bucks more...
From what I've seen, while MSRP is simlar, good discounts are available for the Onkyo, but I haven't seen that on the Denon.

I've read about more random issues with the Onkyo, including networking issues and video problems. I believe that the Onkyo won't put up on screen menus when the input and output are both HDMI. I haven't read about that limitation in the Denon.

If it were only $100 difference, I'd probably go with the Denon, but since it seems like it's a several hundred dollar difference, I'm currently leaning toward buying the Onkyo.

I'm interested in what others have to say about the differences, too.

Error!! 35-1

Just a little insight on the menu thing. I've got a 708 and I still get overlay menus when source and output are HDMI.

Hello,
I wired up my 808 last night. I was quite pissed off to see that once connected to my Panasonic PT-AE4000, resolution set to 1080p and using the HDMI MAIN output, the signal is not reaching the projector properly through a 15m hdmi cable with repeater (colors wrong, red lines across image, constant loss of sync). Please note that if I connect the HDMI cable directly from the 1080p DVD player, there are no issues.
After fiddling a bit, I noticed that lowering the output resolution to 1080i fixes the problem...
Then I moved the HDMI cable from output MAIN to SUB (second HDMI output) and it's now working properly!?!

I'm wondering if my unit or my settings could be faulty... anyone experiencing this?

Cheers,
Gam.

PS: I disabled all RIHD stuff...

But you used the firmwares from the European site or from where did you tried??

It cab be a lot of things, the cable can be faulty, the cable can be bad quality, etc...
Maybe you could try one of the latest high speed hdmi cables... if the one that you have is not.

Sry, this forum works a little bit differently. I'm used to the "Quick Reply" button quoting the post from which you click that button. I was offering experience-based insight on this comment:

That's good to know. I thought I had read some people noticing the menus not showing up. and then I read the manual and found on page 90:

"Depending on the input signal, the on screen display may not appear when the input signal from the HDMI IN is output to a device connected to the HDMI output."

So now I guess I'm wondering what "Depending on the input signal" means.

If the experiences I've read about from others are any indication, the dependancy has something to do with the way the wind is blowing on any given day

Been using my new 808 without ANY problems.

No heat issue. (haven't even heard the fans kick in - must be thermal activated)
No Network issues. (Plug into router, then receiver, turned on receiver)
Sound is excellent.
iRadio good too.

Very happy.

just tried the firmware update and got and "Error!! 5-31" message. Onkyo had me power off and reset the receiver.

I also asked product support about a zone two issue I have been having, and learned that zones 2 and 3 will only play from an analog input. I have my itunes going to my AVR through digital and evidently it will not use the digital input to play in zone 2. Is this unusual? Seems a little weird to me, and lack of foresight on Onkyo's part. I guess I may take an analog cable from the outs and route it back to an analog input in the back of the AVR. Total bummer.

going to try for the firmware update again...wish me luck.

Same error 5-31....even tried to download to USB thumb drive...same thing. Anyone sucessfully update their firmware? Have any magic fairy dust?
check the NR708 thread for instructions. The gist is that you gotta use the Net/usb mode. That fixed it for me.
I've done my update (I am in Malaysia btw and my unit spec is same with the EU model)

The 1st time it give me the Error-35 message, and I have to shut down the AVR and on again.

Try 2nd time and it went smoothly with the vTuner playing in background while downloading the new firmware. It shut off the vTuner when doing the fw "writing" process...it took around 40 mins using my ultra slow (512kbps) internet connection.

after installation the display show "Complete!" and I have to manually power off the unit and on again.

The vTuner's radio station logo now display properly and my TV shows a resolution of 576p with sharper image.

Great job, Onkyo!

Update Complete. thanks Simon. Switching the input to USB worked perfectly.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to get music to zone two. I am currently running a digital audio run from my computer to the AVR and would like the same music to play through my zone 2 speakers, but Onkyo has said that zone two will only play analog sources. Can you think of a way to get around this? Can I hook a pre-out into the analog in for a zone 2 source? Not sure why they would have the AVR not play a digital source for zone 2? Is this because the DAC are dedicated to the mains?

Thanks

The cable is fine, when it's plugged directly from the DVD player (outputting 1080p) OR from the HDMI Sub it works fine. It's only when connected to the HDMI Main that I get transmission problems.

By the way, what's your opinion on On-screen menus? Do they deteriorate the image (because it must be sampled to be superimposed)? Or only when appearing.

I don't like the volume bar appearing on screen, I wish we had an option to disable it.

Regards,
Gam.

Hi Gam, not sure if this helps but try to by-pass video upconversion in the AV receiver by simultaneously press the VCR/DVR and RETURN on the receiver (see page 22 in OM).

Anyone try using zones 2/3? I have outdoor speakers hooked up to zone 2. I would love to hear my Ipod, Pandora, or other music sources on my outdoor speakers, but I can't! Digital input sources are not output!!! WTF! Good thing I saved all my 8 track tapes an LP records.
I successfully updated the firmware, but I still cannot control my VIP622 with the Onkyo remote.

Guess I'll have to call their customer support.

Rubb77,

The Network and Firmware selections remain "gray" for 50 seconds after power on of the AVR and then become selectable. I guess this is to prevent accidental selection????

This is exactly the problem I ran into. Zone two will not play digital sources. I would love to know a work around. I am debating on whether to purchase another airport express and use analog to connect for zone two input.

This limitation by Onkyo of not passing through stereo from a digital source is a little over the top crazy....but maybe I'm missing the technical limitation. My guess is that the DACs would need to doubled for zone 2...but who knows...kinda makes zone 2/3 very limited. BTW the AVR will only output zone2/3 in analog from a analog source,as well.

oh, btw....my pandora will play through zone 2, which are also my outside/whole house speakers. Not sure why it works for Pandora, but not another digital source???

Just installed my 808 last night. I have a couple of questions I hope you "experts" can help with, but I have been reading through this thread and wanted to make a couple of comments/observations based on what I have experienced:

- All components are connected via HDMI (except CD player).

- I am able to get all of my sources to play in zone 2 (using zone 2 pre-amp out to another amplifier) but I did have to run analog cables as well as HDMI for my cable box). I can get zone 2 for internet radio, Pandora, and network MP3's by following the instructions in the manual - although it was easier using the front panel rather than the remote.

- No network problems at all. Pandora, internet radio and connection to my home network without any issues. I did update the firmware so not sure if that fixed a problem I didn't know I had.

- No heat issues so far and it is installed in an enclosed media cabinet. I'll keep checking but so far pretty cool (compared to my 10 year old Sony).

- Agree completely with a previous poster - this sucker is big! Barely fits in my cabinet from both a height and depth standpoint.

Now for the questions I hope someone can answer for me:

- With non-digital sources (internet radio, FM, MP3 over the network, Pandora, etc.) I can't get any speakers excpet my main Left and Right to play. No sub woofer, no surrounds, nothing. When I press one of the modes buttons I get "not available" or something like that. Even my 10 year old Sony would do L & R and Sub.

There has got to be a way to get at least my sub woofer to play with my main speakers when listening to non-digital stereo sources. Anyone know how?

- Could just be my expectations, but my BluRay movies just don't seem to sound as good as they did before on my older Sony receiver. I ran the Audyssey setup and have tried all of the various listen modes but the sound just doesn't fill the room like it used to. Any suggestions on settings that I could have wrong or areas of the setup (both receiver and BluRay) that I should check?

- Kind of a picky thing but when I am in the Net/USB mode if I go to any other input (receiver for example) and then back to Net/USB I cycle through the options of Net/USB/Internet Radio just by pressing the Net/USB button. All I want to do is regain control of that "device" but the receiver thinks I want to cycle through the inputs. Hoping a firmware update fixes that in the future, or maybe I am doing something wrong?

I hope my observations are helpful, and any insight you can provide to my questions would be greatly appreciated.
What firmware do you have now? Maybe that fixed the digital output to zones 2/3.

Mike
This is probably a stupid question..but when you are playing a BluRay with DTS-HD or TrueHD, shouldn't the front of the receiver say that is what codec is being used? All I see is multichannel PCM.
