The "Official" Onkyo TX-NR808 Thread - Page 48

Well I'm about to join the nr808 club as my Marantz receiver kindly got struck by lightning beyond repair.

The main reason I am after the nr808 is the dual HDMI outs. But I have been unable to find exactly how they work.

What I really want to do is use my nr808 as a HDMI switch so i can run cable tv to a second room to keep wifey happy if/when I am playing PS3 in the main room.

HDMI Input 1 >>>>> HDMI Output 1 (video only)
HDMI Input 2 >>>>> HDMI Output 2 (video and audio)

Also, the iPhone App sounds great, but it's a shame it's on the iPhone. Is there an Android version?

Thanks in advance.

Are you in Europe? If not, you'll need to find another receiver because the American version only has one HDMI out.

Sorry, should have mentioned that. I am in Australia, so our version has two HDMI outs.

Well then, you're in luck But I can't tell you how that works since mine only has one.

After reseting receiver back to factory settings issue disappears. I have a 3.1 setup (HSU Ventriloguist VT641 + HSU STF-2 sub). Any ideas what is going on?

It's happened [to you] more than once.

I did a bit more testing and noticed that those symptoms are there even without Audyssey. They are just not as loud and clear as with Audyssey. I guess I have to return it.

Strange. Sorry to hear.

So, I spent HOURS backing up all the kid's movies in mkv format with only the dts-ma audio tracks, but then when I plugged in the hard drive to every media player I have, I can't get any audio. I've used the WD HD media player, and the samsung 6500 blu ray player and the pn63c8000 media player with no luck. Anyone know a way I can get my 808 to play the dts-ma audio from a portable hd?

Sorry bout that. Here's a different link - http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/ge...y-jerky-82131/
Can't seem to find the other thread from last night. Others are getting it to work, try doing a search for it on the AVSFORUM - that's where the one I had last night was from.

Here's an odd question for the folks that frequent this thread:

I have an Onkyo 606 in my HT. I'd like to upgrade it to a similar Onkyo model that can handle HDMI1.4, as I've upgraded to 3D.

The 808 seems plenty powerful enough at 135 w/ch vs the 90 w/ch of the 606 - I'm plenty happy with the power put out by the 606, but wouldn't mind a bit more headroom.

I don't have a good home for the 606 if replaced by an 808, as my family room also has a 606, and I have other 5.1 receivers in other rooms that are doing just fine. But the 606 probably isn't worth much on the used market.

I run a 5.1 system. The 808 (and other higher-than-606 models) have analog pre-outs. So I am hypothesizing that if I run the three fronts from the 808, would it be a good/bad idea to use the pre-outs to power my rears using the 606 in a 2-ch configuration? The 606 would be set to direct analog-in mode, naturally, disabling every possible control that would color the sound, and act essentially as a power amp for the rear two channels.

That would allow the 808 to focus on the front three for power and clarity, and the 606 would be no slouch in pulling along the two rears - certainly less stress than the current situation where all five channels are powered by the 606.

Comments? Flames? Ridicule? Anyone? Bueller?

I would leave 606 aside and use 808 with all the speakers. The Audessey MultEQ is doing hell of a good job of autocalibration, including subwoofer equalization. You'll be schoked at how much better your speakers can sound. By the way, if you were satisifed with 606's power and only want to upgrade for 3D, you might just as well opt for 708 which is cheaper and still more powerful than the 606 and comes with MultEQ. The 608 and 609 are also as powerful as your 606 and sound much better but their Audessey is 2EQ which doesn't equalize the subwoofer.

I have a Behringer 1124 to EQ my Subwoofers, so I'm ok in that department. So in that sense Audyssey 2EQ may be OK (I can't even recall whether I have engaged the Audyssey EQ for my two set-ups, I seem to recall I was pleased with the unaltered sound).

And it's not a case of simply upgrading for 3D/HDMI1.4 handling - I figure if I'm going to spend $300 to $500 for a 260/608 or 270/708, I might want to explore going a bit higher to achieve a useful amount of additional watts (135 vs 90 seems like a tangible difference compared with 110 vs 90). So the 808 caught my eye.

Otherwise I'd simply put up with my current set-up (which does everything just fine except I'm lacking advanced audio codecs for 3D BDs) until something fails and actually needs replacement.

Thanks for your opinion, though. Not trying to defend myself or anything, just clarifying wants/needs.

I saw many metnions of 1080p stuttering video from a Blu-Ray player, has anyone found a workaround? I bought my 808 ~6 weeks ago. Using an LG player and video stuttered. I called Onkyo and was informed it was a defective unit. I returned and got a replacement, and same problem. My workaround was lowering my DVD player to 1080i. On a whim, purchased a new Sony Blu-Ray last night, and it does the same thing. So I now know it's not the DVD player, and now that I'm on my 2nd 808, I doubt it's a bad receiver, just a bad issue with the 808. Running the HDMI direct to the TV works fine. The cable is a "decent" one...could a top-notch HDMI cable be the fix? thx
post #1426 of 1795
Hello N.W>. If youre HDMI cable worked fine direct then I can only assume the HDMI cable is fine. Going to an overpriced cable wont help I can assure that! When I first got my 808 a couple of months ago I had somewhat of the same problem. I contacted Onkyo as they had told me to "update" the firmware as I had mentioned to them that I had already. So... I run the update again... and bohold no problems! I'm not saying this will work for you as it maybe something else but it resolved my case anyhow. Good luck on the fix

You definitely want to update the firmware, it has several fixes. Also, try setting the video on that input to "through", as you don't really need an video processing on bluray. It sounds something in the chain is not handling the 1080p/24 properly. Let me know if that helps
post #1429 of 1795
Thanks for the replies....actually if the Sony DVD player worked the LG would have become a paperweight. The firmware is the latest, and the video is set to "through". I spent ~30 minutes on the phone with Onkyo this morning. They had me: reset the receiver (no fix), swap the HDMI inputs on the back (no fix), and verify my LG-BD390 is "HDCP" compliant. I did find info that it is. Onkyo thinks now it's my TV which is a Mitsubishi WD-65734. Dunno'...running out of ideas, and not ready to buy a new TV.

Hi no_worries, a few suggestion to try:
- turn off Deep Color on the LG BD player (if it has this in video menu option)
- turn on Game Mode on the receiver
- turn off Video Processing on the receiver

I'm baffled......

Just got my 808 and love i! I have everything working except for one thing, my Wii game console. I'm using component cables from the console and have gotten past the input reassignment to get the video working through IN2. But for the life of me, I can't figure where to plug in the analog audio cables. I've tried a couple of likely spots, but no go. And it appears you can not do analog audio reassignments. Or, if there is, maybe that's what I am missing.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Jim

Hi jmarias, correct the analog inputs are not assignable. You need to plug the Wii audio cable into the same labeled input name as you're using for the video source name (i.e assigned Component IN2 to Game, connect Wii audio to Game port). Then go into Audio menu for Game Input and set Audio Selector to Analog.

That did it! Many thanks! A little hard to get my head around the inputs, reassignments, labels, etc.... But, with your help, everything is now working perfectly!

You're welcome, now grab that wii-mote and show what you can do .

I have just switched out my Denton AVR3310 for an 808 and have a question about how the receiver decodes a stereo signal from my cable box. Most HD channels of course come through with Dolby digital 5.1 signals, but there's an occasional stereo program that does not get my audyssey settings applied. This makes the programs in stereo sound significantly quieter than the 5.1 programs. When this happens the receiver is in "direct" mode.

Is there a way to have the audyssey settings(dynamic eq and volume) to programming with 2.0 audio?
Use Stereo mode...
or "all channel stereo" as this sounds a lot louder!
Thanks JChin, but a few questions:
- turn on Game Mode on the receiver (isn't that an audio mode? I'm not sure why that would help?)
- turn off Video Processing on the receiver (I have monitor out set to "HDMI" and resolution is set to "Through"...is that what you mean?)

Game Mode either minimize or bypass video processing to help reduce lag.

To turn off video processing by setting it to "Skip", see page 22 in OM (you will lose the overlay OSD).

just about to pull the trigger on upgrading my 705 to an 808 to gain 3D and more power.

I have the room shown below (click for fullsize):

So I've got 7.1 hooked up, but there is little encoded in 7.1 yet.

Would it be better to take my RC-Minis down and use them for Height?

Or should I move the RC-Minis to the sides and use RC-10s for Height?
