You have a fairly large room, to push 90db (so/so average sensitivity) speakers to good levels just below or near reference you'll need more power.

I'd get a mid-priced AVR with PRE-OUTS so you can add an external amp (Emotiva XPA-3 comes to mind) if you find you need one... and you probably will... no doubt it will sound better even at lower volumes... a beefy amp will really allow your speakers to open up and show you what they can do, bass, imaging, detail all increase...even at lower volumes. I run 93.5db sens. Rocket RS8850s from 14' and it made an insane difference once I added a 200w x3 Emotiva to them.

No Pre-outs= no possiblity to upgrade!

On the Denon 1911 it says it has:
Enhanced power amp assignment
high current/discrete amplifiers
Enhanced power amp assignment
Pre Amp output is listed as "sub" (not sure if that limits it to just a subwoofer)
Assignable amplifier configuration of back channels
Pre Amp outputs for multizone


So I am a bit lost, does this or does this not mean I will be able to add an amp (upgrade my power).

No it only has a pre-out for the sub...Yamaha and Marantz maybe Onkyo offer 5.1 pre-outs in some of their mid-priced AVRs. No AVR power section can compete with seperate amps so don't put all of your money into an AVR that has a lot of power compared to AVRs. It's a waste of money... You can get a $400-500 AVR with a $500 B-stock Emotiva XPA-3 (that weighs over 50lbs and runs 3 channels @ no less than 200w with all channels driven). And you'll totally kill any $2000 AVR out there....

Personally I wouldn't even look at AVRs without pre-outs...the upgrade bug is a feirce little creature...and you don't want to regret your puchase and have to sell your new AVR because you can't upgrade to seperates..But that's my opinion only.

You want a receiver that has preouts for the front 3 channels, not multizone.

If you want a Denon that's going to cost you a whole lot more (~$800) to get one with the proper preouts.

You may want to look elsewhere like the Onkyo RC180, 707, 807 or the new 708 and 808. You can get a Yamaha with preouts under $400 if you stick to last years models. The RX- V665 and 765 are pretty heavily discounted right now. If you want a 3D model you start with the RX-V667.

Ok, hopefully its not to late to change my order because I do put a lot of weight on being able to upgrade, and can see myself wanting the amp.

With that said, I looked at the above AVR's and I think i can rule out the marantz because it only listed 3 hdmi inputs. I need at least 4 inputs.

Can you guys point me towards a less than 500 AVR with
amp pre outs
3d
4+ hdmi in with 1 out (with arc)
and the obvious features and codecs included in my previously selected denon 1911

So which one of these has those things?
Pioneer VSX-1020-K
Onkyo 608 (708-808 are out of my price range)
yamaha 667 (if i can find a decent deal under 500)
any other?

If I find one tonight ill try and cancel the 1911 before it ships.

Yamaha RX-V667 is the closest I've seen to your price point with the features you require, but its $50 above your budget.

i found a place i can get a discount on the 667 (420 bucks total)

should i switch my denon 1911 to the yamaha... about to make the change and hoping its the right move.

Make sure you can get a full warranty from that dealer. If they're not authorized Yamaha dealer you could be screwed.


I can't make the Denon vs Yamaha decision for you. You have to decide which features are most important.

You have trouble making decisions hu!

Both brands make great AVRs... the heavier one with the most power consumption will most likely have the better amp section and output more power..which will be much less than what the specs say with all channels driven... unless you spend a lot more.

If you plan on getting a 3 channel amp don't worry too much about the AVR's power as it'll end up only powering 2 or 4 surrounds depending on if you have a 7.1 or 5.1 system.

Besides that....if it has the options you want...get it...if Pre-outs are a must for you (they are for me) don't buy an AVR without them....If you're not sure go to best buy and see if you can find similar models...as listen to them on the same speaker so you can hear how each sounds... amps in AVRs and seperates do have slightly different sounds from model to model and brand to brand.

I say...buy that one...yeah the black one.

not sure what to do in this case.

I received my first of a set of polk monitor 70 speakers today from ups.

The box was obviously not handled with any care, but I was hopeful there would be no damage. Took the speaker out to realize the feet of the speaker had scratches on them (which I dont care about) but could indicate these speakers have been used. Then the part I do care about, right at the middle of the front panel of speakers there are two obvious scratches, about 1.5 inches each. This is in the front silver part of the speaker panel, behind the mesh grill.

The problem is newegg is out of these speakers and I do not think I will get a replacement. Polk 70's are either out or out of my price range everywhere. Am I stuck with speakers that arrive scratched up and possibly used?

FYI, I cannot test them because I will not receive my new receiver for about a week.

What to do?
