Onkyo control of DVD & 5.1 audio

I've been putting up with this issue for quite some time now.

I replaced a Sony receiver with an Onkyo TX-SR606. I can control my DVD player in a normal manner using the remote with the DVD mode selected. However, I'm puzzled as to why I must then switch to the MULTI CH mode in order to hear 5.1 audio from the DVD. If I need to pause the movie I need to switch back to the DVD mode. Using my old Sony receiver, 5.1 audio input was linked to the DVD operations.

How are the player and AVR connected?

Well, the audio is in MULTI CH mode, so there's no mystery unless you have chosen MULTI CH as the default audio source for DVD.

Yes I'm not an audiofile, I don't follow. The setup is nearly the same as with the Sony I used before. What connection method should I be using? Should I toss out a perfectly good DVD unit and get one wiht HDMI connection?

According to the User Manual of your Onkyo, you can control your DVD, CD, etc players with your Onkyo remote control. I suppose you've programmed your remote control to work with your DVD unit using (DVD) button.
I think you can program your (MULTI CH) button to work with your DVD unit also, so you can control play/pause etc. within MULTI CH mode, without needing to switch modes between DVD and MULTI CH.
That way, you can ALWAYS use (MULTI CH) mode for watching DVDs

I do not know the Sony or your specific Onkyo but the Onkyo/Integras that I do know allow the user to set (in the menus) the MULTI CH as the default input for a particular choice which, in your case, would be DVD.

It all sounds like good advise. I'll give it a go. Enabling MULTI CH with the DVD button seems to be the most logical and user-friendly approach.

Thanks

Your current DVD player probably has an optical and/or digital coaxial output in addition to the 5.1 multi-channel outputs. Using a digital output to your Onkyo TX-SR606 (I have the same receiver BTW and love it) will also get you DD 5.1 via the receiver's DD decoder. With your current connection the DVD player is doing the decoding.

Good point.
