I use a usb flash drive to play our music in our cars. Will these work with this receiver and will I be able to hear the music using zone 2?

Mass storage devices should work fine provided your files are in the supported formats (p. 67 in the manual).

Works great with my iPod.

I just discovered that I can use apps on my android to push music to my Onkyo wirelessly. Both are on the network, and I knew that I could run a server app and use the receiver to pull from my phone, but pushing seems even better. Loaded up my sd with 20 gig of music, sitting on the couch, queuing up music with my phone like it's a remote control. NOW I am glad I stepped up to the 708 for the network capability! I've tried "iMediaShare" and "Twonky"... iMediaShare seems a bit more stable, but Twonky's interface is more intuitive. Phone has to be plugged in though, streaming is a big battery drain.

Next up: setting up Pandora/Slacker/MediaFly and vTuner... Has anyone tried out vTuner?

Not sure this is the right location to post, but...

I have an Onkyo TX-NR708, purchased in January 2011. I'm having difficulty w/bass settings. When using the audyssey EQ, I set the bass level to 75dB and I'm running a SVS subwoofer w/the gain on the subwoofer amp set at about halfway.

On the home screen, to achieve 75dB with this gain setting, I had to move the bass adjustment (during the test tones process) way down. Then when using the receiver for music, there is almost no bass. So, I decided to move the increase the "Subwoofer Level" bass adjustment and increase it several dB to achieve more bass.

Now my music sounds perfect, but when playing a Blu Ray w/a lot of low frequency content, the bass is overwhelming. I set the LFE to -20db and also tried -Infinity dB, but this only helped a little. I actually had to turn my subwoofer down when watching Ironman 2 last night.

The home screen doesn't want to let me adjust the settings by source (bass higher for audio input, bass lower for Blu Ray/DVD input). If I touch the "Subwoofer level" on the home screen, no matter the input selected, it changes the level for all the inputs.

Anything I'm missing? This receiver has so many layers of adjustment, wondering if I'm doing something improperly.

Thanks!

I am considering switching my speakers from a 7.1 (rear speakers) to the 7.1 (front wide speakers). Have any OnkyoTX-NR708 users made this switch? If so, have you noticed any improvement in the soundstage?
Thanks

I've used vTuner, and it's pretty good... lots of preset selections from all over the world. The bitrate/sound quality is highly dependant on what each individual station is putting out, however.

Also, the other thing I've noticed is that if you bookmark a station that you browsed in the vTuner menu, it will have to navigate through the menu tree to retrieve it each time. In other words, if you save a Philadelphia station as a preset, when you select it, it will retrieve: United States / Pennsylvania / Philadelphia... etc. If you find a station you like, look up the url & enter it manually, it will retrieve much quicker.

First, I know you probably already accounted for this, but make sure your subwoofer placement is optimal for even in-room response.

Then, check the input settings... the "LFE Level" setting should allow you to adjust the bass for each input individually... details on p. 49 in the manual.

Also, you didn't mention how you have your blu-ray hooked up, but if using the multichannel input on the Onkyo, you can use the "subwoofer sensitivity" setting to account for the 15db adjustment to the analog bass channel (p. 44). If using hdmi this won't matter.

After you run Audyssey, you might want to try boosting the crossover setting for the mains, too. It set my front left/right to 40 Hz, which I think means I'd be missing some bass. I bumped them up to the 80 Hz THX recommended setting. This might affect music differently than it affects movies, since movies may have more sub-40Hz effects.

Also, read this post. It's old, but still relevant.

The manual isn't very clear on how to add an internet radio station to the presets. do I literally cut and paste the URL from the station's website and paste it into the Onkyo's Internet Radio INterface on my server? I cut the URL from the station i was listening to on my laptop, pasted it, and got a huge list of crap when I pick that new preset on the internet radio screen. am i missing something?
when you say enter it manually, can you point me toward a step by step? when i paste a url from by browser into the url column of the Preset Internet Radio tab of the Onkyo web menu, name it under the preset column, and save it, it shows up on my tv screen as a preset, but when I pick it, i get a screen with a bunch of folders on the left, the first of which is "cannot play" then (html file), then a list of other stuff. did i miss a step?

I've owned my TX-NR708 for a while now, but have not used it for video until this week. I have a Panasonic PT-AX100U projector connected to the HDMI monitor out. I have a Toshiba HDA30 HD-DVD player connected to the BD/DVD HDMI input and a Panasonic BD65 Bluray player connected to the VCR HDMI input. If I turn the projector on and then turn on the reciever, I get a connection to the projector and can view the recievers setup screen, etc.... As soon as I turn on the HD-DVD player or the BluRay player the signal connection to the projector is dropped, sometimes with and sometimes without sound from the player to the reciever. Occasionally there will be video, but it is corrupted with what looks like static noise (streaks of flickering white pixels across the screen). If I connect either player directly to the projector the image is fine. The problem is being caused in the receiver, but I'm not sure if it is something wrong with the receiver or if I have something setup wrong that is causing the problem. Anyone have any ideas?
At the risk of being obvious, have you re-checked your input source assignments in the Advanced Setup Menu. (Item 4).
Yes, port assignments are correct. The hdmi handshake does work out occasionally and gives a 1080P signal to the projector, but the image has corruption in it that shows up as white flickering dots and dashes on the screen. Sometimes it is barely noticeable and others it is dense throughout the screen.

Try making adjustments using the Setup button on the remote. After you've started playing a blue ray movie, on the remote - hit the MODE button, then the RECEIVER button. Then SETUP button.

This will go to the setup menus for the receiver, but it will also enable you to adjust for the active input you are using at the time. You'll know if a certain option is designated for the input you are currently using - shown in the upper right corner of the screen.

For example, if you are watching a blue ray movie and press the above mentioned buttons, in some sections you will see BD/DVD in the upper right corner of the setup menu. This will mean that the settings will adjust for that input. If you do not see BD/DVD in the upper right corner of the screen for whichever setting screen is shown, it'll mean that the settings will effect all.

Okay, some other info...

I'm using HDMI for my Blu Ray player. I re-ran the Audyssey EQ set-up again following the explicit directions in the "Top Ten" list of issues one can run into w/the Onkyo receiver (as-suggested). My setting for the Subwoofer is -3.0dB and I just played a Blu Ray action movie. Sounds great and the low frequency effects are excellent.

Now, when I switch to my CD player or Ipod dock for just music, there is almost no bass.

On the "Home" screen, no matter which input I select, when I adjust the "Subwoofer Level," it changes it for all input sources (Blu Ray, CD Player, Port (Ipod), etc.). I don't understand why the home screen shows the input source in the upper left...since no matter what you change from this screen, all inputs are affected.

When I use the "Mode" "Receiver" "Set-up" path, and go to "Audio Adjust," I can only adjust the LFE down to a max of -20dB. If I use "Mode" "Receiver" "Set-up" and go to "Source Set-up," There is no way I can discern how to adjust the subwoofer level, by source, from this screen.

It seems like the "Home" screen should be able to adjust the levels for each input exclusively...but, as I mentioned, it changes the settings uniformly for all inputs, even though it shows a specific input in the top left corner.

Out of ideas. Any further thoughts? Really appreciate the comments.

Hi Brian, if after running Audyssey and the receiver set your front mains to "Full Band", try resetting them to a crossover of 60Hz or 80Hz.

Make sure the url you use points to the mp3 or rss feed (not an html document). This info can usually be found on the station's website.

When I say manually, though, I actually meant enter it right on the onkyo, using the remote & on-screen keypad, bypasing the computer altogether.

When listening to CD or IPOD, hit the home button.

Tell us what is says for each of these:

1) "Audio"/Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume and Music Optimizer.
2) "Info"/Audio.
3) "Listening Mode"/Music.

I am having a pass through issue. It seems that every time I want to pass through I need to turn the reciever on (it is already in standby) pick the source and then put it back in standby. I was under the assumption that if the reciever is in standby then it will pass the signal without having to turn it on.

Am I doing something wrong?

I think you need to have both HDMI Control and Power Control turned ON in the Main Menu | Hardware menu. There's a small note about it on page 56 of the manual. You'll see HDMI THRU light up on the receiver when it's passing the signal through. This is probably all you need to do. Post back here if that doesn't fix it.

Hi BayouBengal, HDMI pass thru only works with the last input source used before turning off (standby) receiver.

Should vtuner display the song playing? It displays the station name and audio quality but the song name is two or three dashes. If anyone has a station that does display song info; could you please paste the name and/or url so I can test it myself.

I am cutting the URL from the media player on the station's website. For instance, i am pasting this into the URL field in the onkyo setup.

http://stream3web.securenetsystems.n...locateURL=true

Does this not look like what I should have in there? I don't know how to look for an mp3 or rss reference on the station's site?
Can you paste a url you are using so i can see if my receiver is operating properly?

No doubt! I wish it did! Mine doesn't show the name of the artist or song either, just the - - - . I listen to 1.FM and some songs are sweet! To bad I have no idea who or what the name is! I've NEVER seen a name listed there (or for any other station either), just the - - - . Maybe it is up to the individual "stations" to broadcast that information? Not sure, but they're behind the curve.

Nah, that's a url that launches a window with an interface that has the stream embedded in it.

Try this:

mms://stream3.securenetsystems.net/WZBH

(from the station's own website, www.wzbhrocks.com; the "Mobile Streaming" link has instructions for setting it up on smart phones, etc.)

For example, here's the one I use for KKJZ in Long Beach: http://1.ice1.sa.streamaudio.com/kkjz_fm.mp3

I've been trying to get Slacker to also play on my RC180 like it does on my 708 but can't seem to find the proper link. Would you know how this is done?

I don't see the Slacker logo on the RC180 page (http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=f). If it doesn't show up on the iRadio main menu, they may not have licensed it for this model, or it may require a firmware update.

If Zone 2 is on and the main set is off (standby), the display will be off... the small green light on the left will indicate zone 2 active.

If Zone 2 and the main set are both on, the display will indicate the main set settings.

Are you using Zone 2 in your main listening room?
