Most everything is pretty well set, but I'm trying to make a decision about internet radio. I don't have an ethernet connection so I'd have to buy something like this in order to make it work with my wireless network: TRENDnet Wireless N Gaming Adapter TEW-647GA

I have a Playstation and Apple TV, so I have various music options but service I really like and want access to is Grooveshark.

My question for you guys is, do you know if Grooveshark can be added as an Internet radio option? It is supported/compatiable? In the Internet Radio menu on the receiver I see options for 7 pre-programmed stations (vTuner through Napster).

For those of you not familiar with Grooveshark, it's similar to Pandora except superior in several ways - you can program all your own music and there are no audio ads in the free version.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

1st... wireless extender will work, but you can also hook up to a laptop using internet connection sharing and a crossover cable... search my posts earlier in this thread.

2nd... Grooveshark not supported on the onkyo out of the box, but the version of Pandora it comes with is commercial free, at no cost! Also allows unlimited skips, though still streams at only 128k.

Nope, it did not????

It did a bunch of sound bursts and set distance and dB settings for loudness, but did not do any frequency sweeps........

THANK YOU so much for the quick reply! I'll search the earlier threads about laptop hookup. My question there is whether the Onkyo supports Macs in addition to PCs ... I'll peruse the thread as I'm sure this has been asked.

Thanks again!

Sounds like it did then, those bursts are very fast sweeps.

No problem!

I'm using a PC, so I can't tell you about setting up with a Mac. You *may* have better luck checking the htpc forums or googling re: networking info, because when I contacted Onkyo directly, they replied that the unit only supported direct connection & that ICS wouldn't work... but after some trial & error I can say it most definitely does.

I have a 708 and a paid Pandora subscription. I have a commercial free experience (which I expect with my subscription), but certainly cannot do unlimited skips. After just a few skip, I get an error explaining the that there limits to skips. I dont have this problem when I use my Pandora account on other devices.

When I bought my 708, I wasn't signed up for Pandora at all. The setup had me go online & register (the free version), and activate the receiver.

Since then (to the best of my memory), it hasn't given commercials or skip messages... What's the normal limit on skips for free accounts? Maybe I'm just not hitting it yet...

It *will* ask if I'm still listening if I've gone awhile without interacting, but that's different.

Also, with your paid subscription, do you get a higher bitrate on the Onkyo?
The Pandora bit rate is 128kbps on my 708 (196kpbs on my PC or MAC). According to their website the is a limit is 6 skips / hr with or without a subscription. Unlimited per DAY with a subscription and 12/ day without.

I keep asking Pandora for 192K support on embedded devices but they say it is not yet supported.

That might explain it; I thought it was 6 per day, which I typically use. I don't think I ever get up to 6/hr or 12/day.

@ lovemysetup: Note - commercial free, yes. Unlimited skips, apparently... no.

It's about 6/hr from my experience. And that's per channel. I can skip away on one channel until it won't let me, then hop over to another channel and I can skip some more.

I have a problem: I can't play FLAC files on my 708 streamed from Windows Media Player 12 (Win77 64bit prof). My 708 recognizes them as 1 bit FLAC files and skipes them.

It there any way to solve this problem?

Then you.

I have an Onkyo Stereo receiver in the same rack as my new 708. It appears that the remotes are on the same frequency. When I turn either one on by remote, the other gets the signal also and turns on.

This is very annoying!!!

I hope that there is a simple solution?

Help Appreciated!!

Just received my new 708 from Vann's and I'm having an issue with the Audyssey calibration...

I'm running a 5.1 set-up as well as Zone 2 speakers. I go through the first steps of the Audyssey calibration just fine...setting fronts to "normal," Zone 2 to "act" (I think that's what it's called) and Sub to "on."

Audyssey then goes through and the tones all output from the correct speakers, skipping over those that are not present.

However, I'm then taken to an error screen that says there was a speaker detect error. In every case, it's the right surround that gives the error. Each other speaker is listed as present or not, as appropriate. However, the right surround emits the calibration tones just fine during the test.

I can't figure out what's creating the error. I've tried switching the +/- to see if somehow the wires are crossed (my surrounds are in wall speakers), but that makes no difference.

Any ideas?

Double-check that you have the surrounds hooked up to "Surr L" and "Surr R", and not "Surr Back L" and "Surr Back R". Easy mistake to make.

Is it possible to add ROKU and PS3 to the TX-NR708 remote?

Video Output:

How can I confirm if the input is being upgraded by this receiver. Is it set ON by default or Do I have to switch the upgrade option ON separately and where.

Thanks

Yes, I've checked this--the speakers are definitely connected to Surround L+R and not the Surround Back. This is confirmed by the test tones as well.

P54 in the manual, you can set the remote and avr to one of 3 different de IDE ids.

Try the standard stuff: full reset of the receiver, and update the firmware.

Then try swapping them, in other words, connect your surround left speaker to the surround right terminals, and vice versa. Then see if the problem stays with the speaker/speaker wire, or stays with the Surr R. That might give you an idea of what's going on. If the problem stays with the speaker, then something might be wrong with that speaker or speaker wire, like a damaged tweeter. See this:
http://ask.audyssey.com/entries/1434...matching-error

If the problem stays with the Surr R, then maybe something wrong with the receiver, the Surr R posts, or the microphone? See the following:

Thanks, it worked!!!! No more hassle!!

Now if the 708 would only trigger on my power amps!!! Only Zone 2??? Don't know why they did it that way when they provide Pre-outs for all channels.

You should be able to control the PS3 with the included IR remote *IF* the PS3 is a slim model and you have RIHD enabled on the Onkyo and whatever Sony calls HDMI CEC (Bravialink?) enabled on the PS3 slim (if it is not already enabled). The 708 remote, AFAIR, can be set up to use the RIHD commands, this is in the back of the manual.

The Roku can only be controlled if it identifies itself as a BD/DVD player. The 708 will only talk to a TV or BD/DVD player over HDMI CEC. If you want to control it over IR, I have no idea.

The Audyssey EQ sets the fronts (my fronts/center are all CSW MC300 speakers...not particularly large) to 90Hz and the center to the THX 80Hz. Given the small/medium size of these speakers (two 4in drivers w/a 1" dome tweeter), that seems like reasonable crossover.

Give me your thoughts on why lowering the crossover will help w/the higher bass output of movies? Is it an idea of getting rid of some of the bass, as the speaker can't handle lower frequencies? How will the higher frequency accuracy be? Will I lose audio/music fidelity vs. audio/movie fidelity?

Hi everyone,

It's been 3-4 months since I had my TX-NR708 and I am starting to see issues I hope you guys can help solve:

1) The amp would stop responding to remote randomly. I confirmed that the remote is still working fine by testing it on other devices. After 10-15 mins or so, it would work again.
2) The amp started turning on by itself! This has happened twice now, I came back home from work finding that my amp is on. And it is not set to the last selected mode. First was Tuner (which I never used), second was Net/USB. What could've caused this?? My apartment is on first floor, has glass-to-ceiling windows, which are covered with curtains all the time. Could it be that the amp somehow caught stray remote signals from neighbors?! Would changing remote ID help? Is it also possible I might have turned on some "scheduled power-on" feature if such thing exist?

I am not sure if there is an issue with the amp overheating. I have my amp in an enclosed space inside tv stand, but it is ventilated and there is at least a foot clearance between the top of the amp and the top of the enclosure.

Any advice will be highly appreciated!

Do you have a wireless network? Is it not secured?

If so, perhaps a neighbor has an Onkyo and they are using oRemote or Onkotron?
I have wireless network. It is WPA2 secured. I'll have to research on what oRemote or Onkotron is. Thanks!
I love the 708, but my WMA files play in alphabetical order, not in the order they appear on the CD. Any way to fix this? Thanks.

They are network remote controls. The odds of it being that are minuscule, even more so with WPA enabled.
