tommymac-

Your symptoms/problems are not of the nature that are related to the IDE cable, clips and goo on the board, or mentioned in the press release... hence I imagine the brush off to the service center with no offer of a shipping label. Hopefully you are still under warrantee, (or purchased an extended warrantee). Best of luck.

My DVD connected to reciever by HDMI and Multichannel cables.
How can I to switch audio between this connections? I tried everything but output goes only thru Multichannels.

Anyone else have this issue? DVD's sound fantastic, cd's and fm radio sounds very compressed and lifeless. (anything in stereo, pure audio, direct) I have 4 ohm KEF c85's for mains. Bought the 708 to replace a 20 year old tx-sv717 pro. I have tried using an external amp for the mains and still no help. Headphone audio is excellent. EQ adjustment helps a little but the dynamic range is just not there. It seems to be about half of what it should be compared to my old Onkyo. Both have the same power ratings. I don't get it.

So using CEC, I can use my TV remote to turn off my TV, and it'll put the receiver to sleep, but is it possible to set up the reverse?

I want to turn off my receiver, and have it turn the TV off, or put it to sleep

I have a plama/monitor that I want to hook my 708 up to, but it doesn't have a remote/IR sensor. It was an old industrial monitor that got powered on by a proprietary video box (that had a remote) that was connected to it, and I assume it received that via HDMI/CEC, as that's the only input it has. So I was hoping that I could use my receiver to send the same type of signal

If not, does anyone know of any other brand of receivers that send CEC signals to the TV rather than just receive?

The TX-x09 series supposedly does have control for TV sets, but I have yet to see it actually work on anything. When firing up the Onkyo app, it shows power, volume, channel and some other sundry functions for CEC control of a TV set. The same app will not display these controls for a x08 receiver, and my testing shows they do not work with these new commands either.

I found a huge (positive) difference, at least to how I had it setup before, when I enabled the Dynamic EQ. Took a little searching on my part but found that if I had it on CAB/SAT so it was displaying on the TV, I could then jump to the input of choice and use the on-screen display to enable it easier then the front receiver menu.

EDIT: Have you run the Audyssey setup yet?

Hi All,

I am new here and also bought a new TX-NR708. While I am happy with most of things with the reciever, I have a question to ask which might sound stupid.

I have a Samsung DLNA TV which has got UBS ports. If I plug a HDD to the TV USB port and use it for videos, the TV is able to display the video but I am not able to get any audio. Logically speaking I find this correct, becuase the TV speakers are off and the TV might be processing the Video directly without passing it through the AVR. However, if this is the case, the whole logic of putting multiple USB ports on TV's is absurd.

Can somebody clear my doubts if this can be achieved?
Sorry if this sounded too noobish!

Hi, I think you can connect the stereo preouts (or earphones jack) from the TV back to the reciever, but you'll only get stereo sound that way

Maybe your TV is HDMI 1.4 compatible, if you activate the audio return channel in your reciever it should work. I don't have a 1.4 compatible TV myself so I don't know if this works. I have a TX-NR808, the audio return channel config is in Hardware setup menu -> HDMI -> HDMI Control [ON] -> Audio Return

I have a tx-nr708 and just purchased a new PC with windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.
Previously I had XP with WMP 11 installed and was able to configure Media Sharing from WMP 11 so that my XP PC showed up as a server in NET/USB on the Onkyo. With the new PC, I am unable to see the PC as a server at all after configuring WMP 12 as much as I could, tweaking all the settings I could find. My new PC can see the Onkyo and I am able to stream from the PC TO the Onkyo My question is: Is this normal behavior for WMP 12? I liked it better when I was able to use my XP PC as a server FROM the Onkyo. Can anyone see their windows 7 PC FROM their Onkyo?

My TXNR708 is about a year old. The past 2 months the receiver was getting less responsive to the remote. Thought it was the remote at first. Now it fails to respond to the remote for long periods and only a power down will restore a response. Like another forum member, we have now come home twice to the receiver being on! Never happened before this. Completed the recent update and it did not help. Over the past two weeks the receiver itself will not respond on occasion and is hot. Powering it down will allow it to function again but at this point it seems whatever is wrong is getting worse. I am really disappointed with the unit and have shut it off completely to see if I can get it repaired. Anyone else have this problem and have luck getting it repaired? Thanks!

Hi dseif, read this thread and call Onkyo.

Greetings Everyone,

I purchased my 708 back in November 2010, It was functioning flawlessly up until I finally decided to update the firmware this past weekend. Now the unit fails to recognize any speakers connected to the system, video is working fine, audio is totally shot. I tried doing a "Clear" which didn't solve the problem, leaving the unit unplugged for 24 hours also does nothing. I emailed support today in hopes that something can be done... I'd hate to lose out on a receiver that I thought performed well... I guess it may be time to start shopping for a Marantz?

Has anyone had any luck with discovering a solution to this problem?
I had a similar issue with a prior firmware version and all is now well. Try downloading the latest firmware to a USB stick, "clear" and then update the firmware from the USB. Good luck!
Yep -- those are primarily for non-audiophiles. What you can do is route your TV's audio out back to your 708. Your audio quality won't be as high but you'll get some sound.

As has been suggested, try downloading the latest firmware to a usb thumb drive and try to updtae again. If that fails, then call customer support. Don't simply rely on e-mail.

Johng, thanks for the reply. I already updated to the latest firmware via network and the problem still persists. Is there a difference between using the usb and the network?

After the update the unit worked for roughly 4 hours, powered it down and went out for lunch, came back and now this issue with lack of audio output has started. I wish I could get this thing working so I could sell it and upgrade to something from a different manufacturer...

I'll be calling Tech Support when I get home, I'm presently in the field working and wont be home for another week.

Firmware update for the 708 available on Onkyo's web site. Dated 7/05/12, Version 1091-1100-0010-2103

1. Improves the operation when HDMI Through is set to on
2. Stabilizes the operation of Network Control

Looks like I have another update to do when my unit gets back from repair. That is, if I keep it.

I'm trying to figure out a way to use the zone 2 trigger to power my two ep2500's, I wish they had a primary trigger as well as a second for zone 2.

Me too. I'd be happy with a switched AC outlet on the back.

If you are sending the receiver in for service, they should install the new software....but it couldn't hurt to specifically ask them to do so (and verify the software # before sending the unit back to you).

Does anyone have more information about the new software and exactly what it does? The only info so far as been pretty vague.

For what it's worth, my 708 has been performing well, though I use it only for Home Theater and I only use one of the internal amps (Main L&R); external amps power the remaining speakers in a 7.1 (7.2 if you count dual subs) configuration. HDMI video signals are set to "pass through". On rare occasions I use it to upconvert s-video signals from a vintage Pioneer LV Player. Recently I re-ran the Audessey calibration and the system is still sounding sweet.

I loved my 708 when it was working, I'm glad Onkyo is honoring their repair program.

I'm debating on upgrading to something with additional trigger outputs, and signal outputs for external amps. Suggestions?

I was also wondering, if I hook up speakers to all the channels available on the receiver, will the receiver decide which speakers to use pending the media's audio encoding? I'm presently running 5.1, with two additional speakers to bring me to 7.1. I was figuring if I pick up another pair of speakers I could have the receiver designate the playback depending on which audio type is being played back.

I'm also updating my subwoofers to four DIY 15's ran off two EP2500's.

Good job Onkyo for still updating the TX-708

I haven't had(knock on wood) any problems and really enjoy this unit.

Anyone know if you can connect speakers to all outputs and let the receiver determine which processing it will use. (Selecting from the front wide, and back surround speakers).
I have an issue that I wonder if anyone else is seeing. I have a 5.1 system with the front speakers bi-amped. The problem is that my surrounds are mirroring each other; i.e. when I do Audessy Config or Setup -> Speaker Setup - Level Calibration and choose Surround Left or Surround Right, both speakers play the tone.

I've tried unplugging these connections at the receiver and if I unplug the left it will stop playing the tone; if I unplug the right it will stop. So it seems to be an issue with the receiver or it's config.

Is there some setting I can't find related to this? Anyone else seen this problem? I'm running the latest firmware if that matters.

I don't believe this is possible. If you think about it, the mic is not directional; it is only sensing distance, level, and frequency information. It wouldn't actually know if all of your speakers were sitting in a pile together.

Big-Sexy907... I have this set up, all 11 speakers set up (plus the 2 subs) and you have to scroll thru the various surround modes to get the different speakers (rear surround/ wides/ heights) active. So a true 7.1 sound track on a blu-ray (there are a few) will not automatically include the rear surrounds unless that option is selected. Unfortunately when sampling the different modes to find what sounds best for an audio or video source, you have to scroll thru most of the different modes to activate the rears or the wides or the heights. (I purchased this AVR to "play" with the different surround modes, since I was not able to afford a 9 channel AVR... and now I am looking forward to the next upgrade with 9 channels - plus an external amp for the remaining 2 channels!)

You have all the speaker inputs connected, Did you use Audssey to eq the room with the various speakers? Also, is it worth it connecting all 11 speakers? Any pictures of your room?

Looks like I have more NS-333's to purchase....
