When this model range is free of its connecting problems, network should run without any problems.
I had two 708 units, both had connecting problems.
Had a 3007 and that worked without any problems.
So get a unit that works, it seems not every user has a unit with connection problems.......
Even network experts can not get a unit with problems to work like it should, so its a complicated problem that has nothing to do with the "network expert" level of the user !

I have picked up a Pioneer Elite VSX-32. I am still patiently waiting to see if Onkyo provides a fix for the network issue, but time is running out as I have like 5 days left on my return policy.

Sadly, it's looking like the Onkyo may go back. Happily, the VSX-32 may stay!

Guys I need a little help...

I have a the 708 hooked up to a PN63C8000 and I am having a problem having SD channels fill the screen. I have black bars on the right and left of SD channels and HD are fine.

I am able to switch the monitor out display settings and it fills the screen temporarily until I change the channel on my comcast. It then re-adds the black bars on the right and left.

Is there an update that fixes this? I just received the 708 a few days ago.

I had a NR 1007 and it did not do this.

I am afraid that the black bars could eventually lead to burn in on my new plasma..

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

There should be a setting in the TV or DVR menu to fix that. Something called "Fit to Screen" or similar. Also its very hard to cause "burn-in" on any current plasma. They have image retention but its not premanent.

I have a DCX3400 and I see no such setting.. It seems to be a setting issue within the Receiver..
Figured it out.. Switched DCX3400 to native by hitting the menu option while it was off..

Hello TX-NR708 owners: I am looking for feedback on the ease of use of this Onkyo compared to the Denon line. I need to make my comparion to the Denon 3311 (or 4311) because of the height constraint that I have of 6.7 inches. (Otherwise i would be getting the 1008 or 3008.) My challenge is that I want clean sound but have heard how much nicer and logical the progamming is on the 708. I might get a 708 with a nice used Rotel amp and want to know how much easier to use the Onkyo is compared to the Denon (and if the amp and processing cleanliness is much different). I am very technical and can figure this out - but I am willing to spend some relatively big bucks on my next receiver. .

I need a new receiver that does networking for my FLAC library and has at leat some of the Audessy EQ.

I just installed the receiver on Saturday. Have been playing with it over the past few days. I tried to update the firmware via Ethernet with zero luck. I kept getting the Error!! 35-1. However, I was able to see the receiver on my network, stream music to it, access internet radio. So, the receiver appears to do everything over my network but be able to update the firmware.

I gave up and just used a USB drive to update the firmware. I hope this resolves the issue.

Can a 708 owner with dual subs tell me if Audyssey applies individual distance for EACH sub...thus having a picture of 2 subs on the GUI?
The manual states both outputs receive the same signal. Basically it just has a built-in RCA Y-adaptor. I only have one sub so I had not checked before, but none of the menus reference 2 subs.

I just ordered my 708 this morning...parts of me wish I had never found this thread. But I have to think that it's like car forums, where no matter which one you look at, you'll find problems.

I'm wondering if, outside of the network issues, you all would recommend the 708? I had an Onkyo receiver prior to this that was the main reason I went for this one. The chances of it being on a network are slim to none anyways, as most of my music is iPod and I really don't much internet music. But, how's the actual receiver performance? It will be hooked up to a 52 inch Sony XBR4 LCD display (2008 model), and the only inputs will be a HDMI cable box and HDMI Blu-Ray player. From what I'm reading, I'm going to turn the upconversion off on the receiver and let the Blu-Ray player and TV do the upscaling on normal DVDs. No ARC either, just cable HDMI into receiver, with video passing to TV.

So, long story short, anyone having any actual audio/video issues with the 708?

If you are a true audiophile, turn video processing off. Personally the cost of losing the OSD does not justify turning off video processing.

Make sure to update the firmware. Since the firmware update, I have not had audio dropping issues.

I also do not have networking problems.

I do not have buyer's remorse and would buy again.

I've had little/no issues with mine (A/V standpoint) and would buy again. One caveat, I currently don't have internet connection available for it so....YMMV on that topic.

After many months of reading an researching MANY different models of receivers I finally pulled the trigger on a ht-rc270. Did basic set-up last night and so far very impressed. Today I'll run Audyssey and try networking for the first time.
I wonder if anyone can help me with this question.

I just got mine in the FED-EX today. I am using it as a pre/pro, running through an external amp. All the manual says about doing this is that you should run the pre-outs to the amp, and hook the speakers to the amp (which I think I could have figured out without the manual). I did that, then tried to run the Audyssey setup, but it's not detecting any speakers. I presume this is happening because there's a setting somehwere that I have to change to run through the pre-outs rather than the speaker taps. But I can't find any setting that would change that. Any ideas?

100W vs 110W, 6 vs 7 hdmi inputs, no Sirius radio, rs-232 or 12v trigger on the 270.

Nope.
Just got mine today and setup - no issues so far.
Network connection is fine, too. I did the firmware update and checked out a few vTuner stations so far.
So far I'm having no network issues either. Was having a problem earlier until I discovered what the MODE button does.
Is it safe to say then that the problem is user related ?

Could be. Seens the majority of people here have network issues.
So after running Audyssey my sub level is set to -15db. Am I right in assuming that the gain of my sub needs turned down and re-run Audyssey?

I had the 3007 and that worked like it should, no connection problems at all.

On the same cable and same router i had two 708 units, and both failed to connect the "normal" way.
The only way they would connect was to leave it running in Network Control mode, then no problems.
But this setting is using power 24/7.........

So i can say its not related to the user as the 3007 worked ok.
I did read some comments form a "network specialist" and he is working with these kind of IT problems all day and he could not get his unit to work in the normal way also.

Yes you are correct. Sub trim should be +/- 3db.

You can turn it down or you can do what I did and just leave everything as is since the receiver is already adjusted to your listening area.

As for turning video processing off that was mentioned in a previous message, no way will I do that. My picture looks so much better with it on.
I'm all set with configuration, everything works good so far by using HDMI connections.

Picture at my new Samsung PN58C8000 3D TV looks PERFECT when video processing is FULLY disabled.
