Both of the Channel Master DVRs have a record function that works fairly well and neither is dependent on a subscription (if TVGOS comes back the 7000-PAL is even better with a full week of programing free) although you will need to be able to open the case and do some fiddling so you can change the HDD. The one warning about the PHD-VRX is that so far no one has even seen anything but a picture and even that seems to be different at various times. This unit has been promised for going on two years and in my opinion is worth the order (I have placed an order) but it may never come to fruition and then you will be stuck with the 7400 and its problems. Sometimes a bird in the hand......and the 7000 PAL does have an excellent tuner. Just a thought...

For recording from OTA,I'm using sonicview 8000HD with external HD,it was perfect when I recorded most of games of world cup 2010,but my friend deleted them all.

I use HD antenna too,but only get a few channels(<20),use it most of time for satellite, but it requires use 8PSK to record programs from satellite as they all encrypted.

A week till Memorial Day and still waiting ...

How long have they been taking orders?
They have been taking orders for the last 5 wks. They replied that they would try very hard to start shipping this week. I have less and less faith in their promises. If they don't get their act together very shortly, as the Dragons say.. I am out. This is border line insulting to take orders for that much time and not providing a firm shipping date.

Maybe that boat finally docked, a unit fell off, and they found out it doesn't work so good on this side of the Pacific. Better to not have, than have something that doesn't work or works badly. Only speculation.

So because of this extreme delay, when it finally appears, we should expect this box to be bug free.

There is about a zillion things I could say.

Nothing is bug free.

where did the golden rule of project management go.. deliver a product on time, at the expected cost and with the expected quality... is this to much to request. I don't think so, I apply those rules in every of my projects and concistently deliver them ??

I have nothing against waiting for a product that meets the requirements, but would have told the mktg geeks to hold their horses and never initiate the pre-order process. Don't tell me that 5 wks ago they did not know how far they were from actually shipping.

just my 2c

I beleive they truly thought they had a product ready to sell, but at the last minute, someone found some problems or issues that weren't aware of.

Surely makes more sense not to go ahead and try to sell something when the probability exists, many of those would return.

Very true, but it's as if the CE people live in a vacuum. I think the unit is designed in Korea, built in China, and tested in the US. That makes for a large feedback loop. It's silly too, since very little has changed here since 2009 in the DVR/broadcast/cable world. What really hurts is that ePVision is not making their first device for the US market. They should know how things work by now.

My 2c.

Microsuck destroyed it with its "ship-it-broken, patch-it-later" approach. The addition of Internet connectivity to devices other than computers has allowed other companies to adopt the same mindset.

That went away (among other things) in 1981.

Managers actually have/had golden rules??

I believe this is a classic case of requirements creep combined with a design to cost goal. There are many Gilbert cartoons in this regard. I have been there on both ends. No, you cannot use a larger processor; no, you cannot add more layers to the PWB; sorry, it has to be a plastic case. If my hunch is true I am a bit concerend about the growth potential of the product. All speculation though.

There is a lot I'm concerned about. BTW, I think you meant Dilbert. And it's the best strip in the world.
^^^agreed! and knowing Dilbert as much as I do I didn't even catch the typo and just read it as Dilbert
post #408 of 476
Well, I emailed CS yesterday to ask if they were any closer to shipping these units and they replied back (today) with:

Hi Al,

Schedule to release the unit about 1 week. I thank you very much for asking.

Have they been telling you all the same thing for 5 weeks?
As the old Highland Electronics stores use to say when they were out of stock on most everything in their ad, it's on the truck Of course they went out of business shortly after, probably due to all the merchandise on the truck and nothing in their store to sell

Got the same answer, this is a joke. I just cancelled my order and will look somewhere else.

Have fun

It takes years to design/develop/validate/mass produce automobiles. Digital video recorders should only take months from project initiation to market, especially since they likely didnt have to design any hardware and simply used an off the shelf reference design and added some custom software to the reference manufacturers SDK to make it theirs.....

Hopefully in a week or 2 all of us will be pleasantly suprised and enjoying the new vrx.
^ the sophistication required for decent Guide software is the killer. And it'd take far longer than months to get anything worthwhile on that front.

Soooooo, do you all think that they will start shipping out these units this week (like they said they would)?
