Anthony Hopkins As Odin

Saw an article on Marketsaw that had a picture of Hopkins in full Norse god gear. I was a bit startled. He's a fine actor but too squat and portly for that role if you ask me. The Marvel comics image of Odin has been stuck in my mind for a few decades. I think that why I was a bit dismayed upon seeing the picture. In fact I almost laughed. What do you think?

^He looks OK, but I have a tough time imagining Thor as a live action movie....
To do it right would cost a frickin' fortune.

Hopkins as Odin.....directed by Kenneth Brannagh....yet, something seems "off" when I see that pic of our THOR cast.

Agreed that as a comic book hero, Thor seems like it would be one of the toughest to pull off. If for no other reason, the potential for it to come off far more silly then intended. But hey, it could be an awesome flick. We'll see.

Between this image & some of the things that have happened/are happening w/ the new Marvel-produced movies (mainly the cast shake ups around the Iron Man films & more recently, the dumping of Edward Norton as Hulk for The Avengers), I wonder of Marvel suit Kevin Feige is actually driving this train straight into a mountain.

Exactly my thought....

Sorta off-topic, but rumor is now that Feige & Marvel are wanting Mark Ruffalo for the Banner role in the Avengers. He is supposedly meeting w/ Joss Whedon very soon.

Ruffalo's a great actor & could certainly pull it off - but with Downey as Tony Stark popping up in Norton's Hulk flick as a connection to Avengers....sorry, should have stuck w/ Norton.

When you are running the universe, it's probably hard to find time to do stomach crunches.

After glancing up and seeing "Anthony Hopkins" in the thread title, for a split second I just knew it was another obituary thread.

If you need someone to play an elder/king/father-figure, Sir Anthony is apparently the man. How many times now has Hopkins played the powerful/wise king/father-figure now? Off the top of my head:

King Hrothgar - Beowulf
Odin - Thor
Father - Wolfman
Elder Zorro - Zorro
Father - Legends of the Fall
Father - Meet Joe Black

I never believed for one second that Norton would reprise his role as the green wonder.

I'm probably in the minority, but I always wondered why they picked him. His casting in that role never felt right to me. Then again, I'm not a big fan of either of the Hulk movies.

He was reportedly already in talks to be part of Avengers & had met w/ Whedon very recently. Then, Marvel announced they were going in "another direction".

Wasn't $$ - probably more Kevin Feige not pleased w/ Norton "meddling" with the Incredible Hulk script (despite being joined by his director in making story suggestions).

I didnt mind him as the Hulk. But one that shits me is the why cant they keep the same character. We had Eric Bana first, then Edward Norton and know Ive read Mark Ruffalo to play the Hulk in The Avengers.

lucky Peter jackson was smart and film the LOTR trilogy all in one go, could you imagine Elijah Wood was replaced in the Two Towers with Danny Devito

I never got into Thor as a kid but the trailer is going to have to look pretty good for it to entice me. At this point the whole Thor thing seems really corny. I could be wrong though. I wasn't excited about Iron Man either and it was great. However, Iron Man never seemed corny to me though.

The only real actor made for the role is Brad Pitt.
Unfortunately (?), he has already played the Greek Thor: Achilles.
No one would accept him as Thor now.
