Nope. Its a very simple nice remote. Backlit. But it has no tv mode. I've held all kinds of buttons on it trying to get it to do something. If I had pictures of the menus I could probably change it blindly. But I can't remember the steps to get to that menu. I WANT TO PUNCH YOU POPBOX PEOPLE

uh oh.... pb tech support claims my unit is bricked and I should receive a call in one hour from advanced tech support. IDK, think mine is going back to amazon today.

I would think the hold time would increase as the day goes on..... As more early adopters have issues. Sort of like the old days of Ticket Master for a Bruce Springsteen concert. I am hoping that 'Johnny" will call me back with an FTP that would allow me to download a working firmware. I wanted to be one of the "Kool Kids" today.

They told me that 1.5 hous ago.. I am still waiting for a call back.. Good luck with that. I already did the return with Amazon for a refund..If Tech Support comes through I will just keep unit, if not I will go to Post Office in the morning. Oh Well I tried....

(assuming you get past the fw issues) Have any of you guys tried the Popbox without trying to play shared content (i.e. navigating the world of PopApps)?

Try the reset pin button in the front.. That may reset unit for you to factory default
post #127 of 3870
good grief, this sure has been frustrating. Something for the masses has a LONG way to go. I am waiting a call back, but in the mean time I still get the following error " There was an error in retieving your media library. Please check the SD card @ back of box. WTF! My stuff is on my network.
There's an SD card in the box you are supposed to insert I think.

Tried. 5 Seconds, 10 seconds 20 30. no go. It just restarts it. Video mode is still screwed

The SD card is for storing imdb metadata, so maybe it not being inserted causes the box to lock-up?

Watchy... What video mode were you supposed to use? What unsupported video mode did you change it to? What display are you using? Do you have another display that supports that unsupported video mode? Borrow one if you have to... the idea is to connect it to the proper display just long enough to change the video mode back to where it belongs.

Is "firmware issues" the nice way of saying firmware f*&k ups?

How about copying a movie or two to an external hard drive or flash drive and connecting it directly to the Popbox via USB?

I am realtively new to all of this, so plz 4give me... but if my music and files are all on my hard drive why is the SD card being mentioned in the error message?

I accidently hit 720p 50hz instead of 60. I got displays out the ass. Would a PC monitor work? I got a HDMI to DVI converter cable.
So it's the 50hz that's causing the problem. Yes, definitely try that and let us know.

U R correct, am I am a dumbass.... HOWEVER, inserted the SD card turned on/off/ unplugged etc. And still get the "loading" message....

***since there is zero support material, can someone please confirm if my W7 machine is set to share and the PB sees my network and am connected. Is there anything else in the PB menu I need to set?

Done... And I can report the movie plays... The only movie I tried was a live godsmack concert (MKV) it recognized my thumb drive immediately. Now I am begining to think since the apps work and the usb works that something is messed up in the network settings. Time to get a beer! This will be a long afternoon.

Syabas is definitely not ready for a mainstream product. They are now using their forums as tech support for today only over at

http://www.networkedmediatank.com/sh....php?tid=42269

No talk at the moment where the support forums will be located after today....
Mine just arrived. Given all the news so far, I'm not nearly as excited as I was this morning.

I have another idea to help Watchy... if swapping the display doesn't work, can anyone give him a list of steps (i.e. which buttons to press, how many times to press them, etc.) to change from 720p "50hz" to 720p "60hz" without being able to see the screen. I would probably give him the steps starting from whatever the default screen is at powerup. I don't have a PB yet so I can't help. Once Watchy fixes this issue he would be able to provide us with more info about the unit.

Ok i'm the Video mode problem dude. I hooked it up to a 24inch Dell LCD using HDMI to DVI connector. Changed it back to automode. Its working on my tv now. Crazy thing is after it booted it asked to download an updated firmware!!! They apparently released another firmware since 2 hours ago when I recieved it and it did the same thing. Hopefully they are fixing issues. They really need a manual because hooking it up to a monitor to fix the freakin video mode is annoying as hell. I was just lucky to have alot of monitors at home. Anyways its downloading now and I have to go outta town to get some stuff so when I get back in a few hours ill update you on if it still works or if it sucks.

This is like solid comedy gold. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, Syabas has a 'one day only, super special' support forum set up over at networkedmediatank.com... they've yet to update Facebook or their Popbox or Popblog pages to help people find this though.

This whole thing is rather hilarious.

For those of you thinking I want them to fail or enjoy it, I don't. I actually wanted this thing to work so I could buy four or five of them but sadly this is just further proof that no one in this business can get their **** together.

Here's the latest from NetworkedMediaTank.com (the creaters of the Popbox);

While I can't say that there aren't/wont be problems, I don't believe that 5 boxes (from my count on AVS forums) not working is an indication that we don't have a stable firmware and that we are kidding ourselves.

Now, we are correcting a few things in that we are getting the firmware recovery image up and online for people who need it. Our Tier 3 Support Staff is already in contact with a few of the users now. (Tier 3 =/= Johnny from Pakkie)

If you have questions that I can answer, direct them here: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=42269

Followed by that thread being locked. They are probably sending IM to the moderators here at AVS asking them to lock this thread too.
What happened in that thread, man they got i locked FAST. Too bad I posted on Engadget a link to these forums haha, lets see them get that comment removed.

To their credit they do know about the problem and all of these threads and seem to be working on it. Lets see how it goes. Werner says they will be getting the firmware image up shortly.

I have been laughing the whole day at this situation. That's all you can really do, all of us got this through Amazon so we can return it without any loss.

I seriously hope AVS would not lock this thread as it would really show a vendor bias on their part.... I know they won't but just saying.
