Bought a V8 today to replace an aging A-110 that wont do TrueHD and DTS-MA from MKV. wish amazon sold it.

Are the issues you guys are talking about using eversion caused by using the eversion player? I never like the eversion player even on my C-200 and you can override it in the settings file and force it to use to stock NMT player. Dunno if this has any effect on those issues but I thought I would throw it out there.

Any tips for a user coming from an A-110 and C-200 and lots of experience with YAMJ and even NMT.

It seems like NMJ has improved and I will give it a spin and see what happens. Otherwise I already have eversion/YAMJ already work great with my local metadata from ember media manager.

NMJ doesn't exist on the v8. Instead there is sort of a hybrid internal jukebox for the v8 (you can see in my review here).

What YAMJ/Eversion issues are you talking about?

The main issues that are affecting the v8/A300 are HD Audio dropouts (for some it happens more then others), issues with seamless branch (only matters if you rip full discs) and some on and off issues with forced subs.

After using/reviewing the v8 I set it up with my mom (using Eversion) and so far she has not had any issues.

So...haven't used the 'ole PopBox in quite some time. I turn 'er on and wasn't surprised to see it prompt me for an update.

I hit the update button and almost immediately had second thoughts. It went through download and install uneventfully enough, but hung at "verifying". I gave it a good 20 minutes or better, but nothing was happening...so I had almost no choice but to pull the plug.

Upon powering back up, I get a "recovering...please insert usb drive". Sure feels like I'm bricked. Any thoughts?

I encountered the same problem. Follow the instructions from the link below ...

The recovery firmware is super old, so you'll want to update the firmware after the recovery is complete.

I have 2009 life bbc 10 epesode series. Everything Iv'e tried to label it gets scanned incorrectly by popbox. I created a nfo from imdb but this only works if the nfo file and episode are identical. Obviously I don't want to create 10 nfo files for each episode. Is my best solution to delete all ten episode titles from each episode to make there title all the same that way they will get scraped by my single life nfo file? Obviously the problem with this is I won't know which episode is which.

lets see how good there support is. I registered the product and opened a ticket. I have a bad feeling this is going to take weeks!

YAMJ or NMJ?

I'm using stock popbox. I don't know what nmj is. Will creating 10 nfo files have the same effect as erasing each episode number from all 10 titles?

I'm not using yamj because I was told I wouldn't be able to move titles visibly from movie folder into home video or other such folder. I count on having this feature so when I visit my parents who have a popbox, they put movies they have already seen into home video folder so A) they won't have to see the title when navigating there movies and B) so that I know what movies to erase from there hard drive for them.

Sorry to hear about your problem with the V8. Hope they will fix it for you quickly. I have not used their support so I have no idea what they will do. My V8 came in about a couple months ago and I got the US plug and the unit performs well for me. The new NMJ has indeed improved and works fine, can download subtitle and cover art with the i button. I have Eversion and YAMJ running also. There were already a couple updates of YAMJ applet on the V8.

The problem I have is with the subtitles. The V8 do not recognize the srt file I downloaded although I renamed it to the same name as the avi, mkv movie file. But using NMJ to download the same srt file from the same site, it works fine. The subtitle key do not allow to choose a file to play.

can't do that from YAMJ. Dont think NMJ supports multi episode DVD's correctly like YAMJ. Sounds like it at least works now which it didn't a year ago. I will try it when it arrives but I already have YAMJ+eversion setup and waiting for it.

Again-Hoping someone knows:
Will it have the same effect to create 10 nfo files instead of erasing each episode number from all 10 titles in order to get correct poster art for all 10 of "Life episodes?

So my replacement power supple arrived in 2 business days DHL from Hong Kong (that can't be cheap). Anyway plugged it in and can't get any image over HDMI.

2 different rigs

tried the TV mode button. nothing.

tried the component dongle and it boots fine....

anyone know how to get the HDMI working.

I also pressed the reset button on the front with the power on and power off for 10 seconds and that didn't solve the issue either.

Any suggestions appreciated...

EDIT:Hot plugging the HDMI in while booting the component video and switching to HDMI works. still trying different combinations now to see whats if there is a pattern. its also pulling some new firmware. maybe the new firmware will fix this issue.

The unit is defective. upon further testing it only POST's correctly like once out of every 5 times you plug it in. Normally it appears the other non blue light shuts off when post completes and the device boots. in 4 out 5 of my boots both lights on the front panel stay on and nothing ever happens.

I was able to configure it and install YAMJ and point to my jukebox and YAMJ works fine.

DVD's played fine
M2TS played fine

both MKV's I tried completely hung and never started playing. Anyone else playing BD rips from MakeMKV with a popbox.

These rips play fine on the C-200 and with video and no audio on the A-110 but do absolutely nothing on the the PB V8.
Sounds bad. I have no problem playing mkv files, bd rips with my v8. I do not use Makemkv, clownbd instead.

There should be only one blue light after boot.

yep thanks for the info

it actually gets worse.

when it booted. I started testing stuff

DVD ISO FIne
BD ISO with Lossless Audio works Fine
BD .TS with Lossless Audio works
MKV with AC3 works

MKV with TrueHD or DTS-MA extracted with MakeMKV fails on every one of over 10 files I tested. The C-200 plays these fine. the A-110 plays em without audio. XBMC and Boxee also play these same files.

they just hang. box is going back.

waste of time and money. with amazon this would not be an issue (at the least the money part)

EDIT: Dbone if you read this. you indicated in your review it passed MKV with TrueHD and DTS-MA. Did you use makemkv to make em?

Did you update to their latest firmware? Most of my MKV's are via MakeMKV, and they're playing fine for the most part on my PopBox v8. There are occasional hiccups, but I suspect my WHS v1 or SMB connection being the culprits. Have been relying on NFS for last couple of days and so far so good.

bizzare. I responded in the other thread.

do you output 24p?

I also remove the Core Ac-3 track from TrueHD but you can't even do that with DTS-MA.

and like I said the old popcorn hours and boxee and xmbc play these files hooked to the same HDMI input on the same System. I just unplug one and plugged the other in.

maybe its a hardware thing since we know it has a hardware problem but its weird it plays the other files....

Onkyo 805 AVR on both systems.

Puzzled and I do this for a living

No issues with mkvs and HD Audio on the PB V8 (I don't use MakeMKV either though)

Now I have to deal with this BS again and pay to ship the broken UNIT back AGAIN!. I'm done with Syabas. I will order a dune first thing monday.

While waiting for the "last hope" Popbox FW I thought I would share with you my first impressions of the eGreat R6S player (which I find very similar to V8 -yet cheaper).

Advantages of the R6S
+ proper standby (only 0.2W power consumption, USB off so no LAN/WLAN activity, no hdd spinning, cold unit)
+ smooth 1080p 60 fps camcorder files playback (tested mts from Panasonic SD900 and mp4 from Sanyo HD2000)
+ proper DD, AC3 and DTS audio output via SPDIF while having TV HDMI connected
+ playback resume works way better than in V8
+ better subtitle user management
+ 3D and 2D/3D features
+ 5 or 6 FW releases this year only ! Alternative FW available with nice skins and Movie Jukebox

Advantages of the V8
+ best in class remote control (backlit hence rare !)
+ nice, elegant Flash menu
+ online movie subtitle fetching (not always working but cool and unique feature)
+ built-in movie thumbgen (not always working but cool and unique feature)

Why don't the Popbox developers go to China for a training and/or join forces with the Shenzen engineers ?! Maybe then we would end up with a perfect player...

Anybody facing lip sync issues in v8? I use makemkv/mkvtoolnix/handbrake for blu-rays & makemkv/handbrake for DVDs & for both , there are lot of lip sync issues. I will check whether I see the same issue in my computer or not . Do I need to do anything on my AVR ?

I also verified running same mkv file from my laptop ( used VLC) - no issues
post #3808 of 3870
I have no sync issues.. Check to make sure someone did not add some push setup while a video is playing to adjust sync.
Can you elaborate please ? What do you mean by push setup?

BTW, I am using YAMJ/eversion
I think the issue is resolved by clicking setup--> audio --> sync. It was set at 1.85. Reduced to 0.31
